IN SYMPATHY. . .
Please remember in your prayers, Evelyn Kraeft, Brother Patrick O’Brien, the brother of Tom O’Brien and John Pauly, the father of Jennifer Cavender who passed away. May we remember those families and friends who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they enjoy the fullness of God’s love.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION
The daily news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a community that struggles to remain in the land of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. Please help support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to this special Good Friday Collection. This Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and others to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s people in the Holy Land.

THERE WILL BE NO EUCHARISTIC ADORATION DURING THE DAY ON HOLY THURSDAY, APRIL 9, HOWEVER ADORATION WILL FOLLOW THE 7:00PM MASS UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

Reflecting the Gospel

last supper

Anna was to make her First Holy Communion, and when it came time for family catechesis, four-year old Christian was brought to the session, too. Much to the parents’ surprise, Christian was good as gold throughout the entire time. More than good-Christian seem to be rapt in attention during the whole hour. After they got into the car to go home, Dad complimented Christian on his stellar behavior and asked him, “What did you pay such close attention to?” Christian answered his dad with another question, “Daddy, why did the teacher keep saying my name so often?” Perhaps this was the first time Christian was confronted with the fact that he shared his name with so many others. We all, in fact, call ourselves Christian because we have the common identity of Body of Christ. Growing into this identity and acting consistent with its demands is a lifelong task. This was no less true for Jesus and the disciples, too. On this, Palm Sunday, we proclaim two contrasting gospels, both declaring something quite different about Jesus’ identity and both indicating to us just how utterly consistent Jesus was with who he truly was. Yet Jesus’ “disciples did not understand” that Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem was not about immediate acclamation and glory but about a glory realized only through the cross: “Truly this man was the Son of God!” Jesus humbled himself to become human, “even to death on a cross”. In the passion account, Jesus shows us how humbly and completely he embraced humanity: he submitted to denial, betrayal, abandonment, torture, mockery, crucifixion. As disciples of Jesus, we, too, are called to humble ourselves. We are to bend our knees before Jesus. Even more: like him, we are to bend our knees in humility before one another. Mark paints a vivid picture of the sufferings of Jesus. At the same time his passion account-and even his whole gospel-rises to a crescendo in the centurion’s amazing proclamation of faith: “Truly this man was the Son of God!” The one both hailed and derided as king of the Jews, the one crucified, is finally revealed in his deepest identity as Son of God. His mission is accomplished - in the shedding of his blood he gives his blood as the new Fruit of the vine in which we all share each time we commemorate him. We might “roll a stone against the entrance of the tomb” where he lay dead; but we cannot contain his true identity and mission.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
The essence of discipleship is that we don’t simply receive the fruit of Jesus’ suffering and death; the essence of discipleship is that we align our own identity with that of Jesus, accept self-denial and self-giving, and in this way walk with him to the cross. Disciples go wherever the Master goes.
Coming to understand who Jesus is, his mission, and how that relates to us his disciples is no easy task; it takes a lifetime. Like Jesus, to be faithful followers by taking up our cross means we will feel this to the depths of our humanity: we will suffer, we will lose heart, we will cry out to God to take life’s miserable lot away from us. But also like Jesus, we have divine life that gives us the strength to carry our cross. It is divine life pulsing within us-which we first receive at our baptism-that raises up our humanity, enabling us to be faithful disciples carrying our crosses, faithful disciples consistent with our identity as Christians, as Body of Christ.
