Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS April 12, 2009

resurrection

Lord Jesus,
this holy Sunday, we celebrate the greatest of all days:
the day your resurrection changed the world.
In conquering death, you brought us eternal life.
In conquering sin, you reconciled God and humankind.
In Forgiving your enemies, you conquered hatreds.
In submitting to your Father’s will, you conquered pride.
In our own lives, help us to always see
that death is not the end of all things, but a beginning.
That living for God is the beginning of new joys in life.
That forgiving enemies is not a weakness, but a strength.
That submitting to God’s will is not a yoke to be feared,
but a cross to be embraced, and a crown to be gained.
Amen.

Reflecting the Gospel

sacred heart

The paschal mystery is not complete until death gives way to life, “the glory of Jesus’ resurrection”. It is no surprise that the Easter sequence-an embellishment of the gospel alleluia-is more poetic than prose in composition. The open-ended language of poetry perhaps tries to capture best the mystery of Jesus risen from the dead. And yet we know that any language at all falls short of expressing the mystery. Maybe this is why our alleluias ring out: this musical, single word captures and expresses the uncontainable joy in our hearts because Jesus “had to rise from the dead.” Alleluia is our way of saying we believe in the resurrection. No wonder we sing alleluia over and over all year long and it is so difficult to bury it during Lent. Taking away our alleluias is like taking away our life. We are lost without it. Death leads all of us to the unbelieving and misunderstanding stance of those early disciples. After all, our only experience of death as humans is that it is final. The suffering and death of Good Friday we can grasp; that is within our human experience. The joy and glory of Easter Sunday we can hardly grasp; it is outside of our human experience. No, the disciples didn’t understand. Neither do we. But they came to believe. So can we. The disciples saw the empty tomb and believed Mary’s report that the body of Jesus was not there. When they encountered the risen Lord, they remembered Jesus’ promise that he would be raised up after three days. Thus they came to believe. To help us come to believe, we have the preaching of eyewitnesses. Our “seeing” comes through hearing an unbroken chain of witnesses who have encountered the risen Lord and preached Christ raised from the dead. Jesus commissioned his disciples to preach; they preach not only the good news of forgiveness of sins and the coming of God’s reign, but disciples also preach by their witness to new life in Christ. Easter Sunday, then, is more than a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. It is also an invitation to each of us to preach the gospel and take our place in the long line of witnesses to Jesus’ risen life. Perhaps this is why we are so awed at the mystery: not just that Jesus was raised from the dead, but that God entrusts us with Jesus’ mission and with being witnesses to God’s mighty deed of resurrection. It appears as though God trusts us a great deal. No wonder we continually sing out alleluia! - it means so many things: Christ’s risen life and our share in it; seeing and believing; witnessing to these great events. And so we sing again, alleluia!
