IN SYMPATHY
Please remember in your prayers Georgianne Pavlicek Lorenz the sister of Sylvester and Vince Pavlicek and the daughter of Sylvia Pavlicek who passed away. May we remember those families and friends who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they enjoy the fullness of God’s love.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES
Whoever, Wherever, Whenever. - the theme of Catholic Charities 2010 Annual Campaign is underway with a collection on April 24-25th. Last year, thanks to the generous support of donors in parishes throughout Oregon, Catholic Charities made a difference in the lives of children, families, women in crisis pregnancy, the abused, the mentally ill and those who turned to us in need regardless of religious affiliation. Ninety one cents of every dollar contributed went directly to the programs and services such as adoption, counseling, and support for those impacted by abortion; domestic violence services, services for more than 3,500 youth in after school mentoring programs; gang outreach services, housing placement and resident services for homeless women, low income families, disabled persons, and the chronically mentally ill, immigration and anti human trafficking Services, refugee services and elder services. We could not maintain its presence in cities and towns throughout Western Oregon without the support of donors like you, who care enough to help. If you are among the luckiest in our community and are in a position to give help, please give as generously as you can to the 2010 Campaign. Please use the attached envelope for your contribution. Thank you.

FUNERAL FOR JACKIE MYERNICK
The funeral for Jackie Myernick the mother of Chris Bassen will be Tuesday, April 27th at 1:00pm.

April 18, 2010

In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus addresses the adult, capable, fisherman disciples as “children.” The appearance of the risen Jesus to them on the seashore is a presence bringing new life, challenging them to growth. Easter life is a constant invitation to growth, a constant opening to God’s unexpected gifts of abundance, a constant invitation to faithful response, which in itself is growth leading to new life. These “children” disciples yet need to grow. It would seem as though the disciples are still missing the point of the resurrection and how it changes one’s life, because Peter and several other disciples revert to what is familiar-they go fishing. On their own they catch nothing. It is only in response to Jesus’ command from the seashore that they cast their nets and pull in a great catch. The two scenes in the gospel capture two different but interrelated aspects of the Easter mystery. The first scene dramatizes what God gives us-abundance of new life. The second scene dramatizes our response-love that overflows in faithfully following the risen Christ even to the point of death-for the sake of our beloved. At the same time, this dying to self is the only way to share in the abundance of new life Jesus offers us. Three times Jesus asks Peter if he loves him and three times Peter responds, “you know that I love you.” But Peter is yet to find out that following Jesus always leads to death. We share in the abundance of the fruit of this new life when we follow Jesus’ commands. We share in new life only if we are willing to share in its costs: following Jesus even to death-dying to self. Heeding Jesus’ call and sharing in risen life means that our own love must be so great that we feed and care for Jesus’ flock, glorify God by dying to self, and all this because we choose to follow Jesus.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Risen life has its demands-but Jesus gives us all we need in terms of abundance and nourishment in order to meet those demands. The incredible thing about our God is that God provides us with all we need, beginning with offering us new life. Accepting the abundance that God offers means that by following Jesus we ourselves become Jesus’ risen presence, those who lead others to him. Every day we must take care that our actions announce God’s blessings at the same time that they speak of God’s goodness and care. Leading others to Jesus doesn’t mean doing big things; it means doing the little things well and so reflecting the new Life dwelling within us.

GOSPEL LIVING
April Focus: Perseverance

Being a good disciple and living a life true to the Gospel is not easy. In spite of God’s unending love and grace, we manage to trip ourselves up and give in to our weaknesses. Those who find God as adults are often filled with great enthusiasm and confidence. They are sure everything will be different now. They may even think that only good things will come their way because, after all, they have turned their lives over to Christ! Eventually, they will discover that faith in Christ is not a vaccine against faults and failings nor is it insurance that protects them from bad things. Faith is the grace that helps us endure and find the good in the midst of disaster. It helps us get up and try again when we have failed to be the person we would like to be. Discipleship is a life-long journey. It will take us places we never dreamed of going and places we would rather not go. It will confront us with our weaknesses and tear down the excuses we make for ourselves. Discipleship demands perseverance. Every day is a challenge and there are no holidays. When we fall flat on our face, we must get up-acknowledge our faults and seek God’s grace to do better next time. Even the saints had their shortcommings. We only hear how wonderful they were and the good things they did. But, that is only part of the story. Find some good books on the lives of the saints. Even Jesus experienced hardship and was sentenced to a horrible death he did not deserve. How can we complain about our sufferings? God’s abundant grace is always with us no matter what we may have done, or what disaster may befall us. Weaknesses and problems maybe our greatest blessings because they remind us of our need and dependance upon God. When we feel we are doing well and everything is going our way, it is easy to forget about God. Give thanks for your struggles and pray for the grace to persevere to the end of your life.
