Weekly Bulletin
SUNDAY MASS April 19, 2009

Heavenly Father and God of mercy,
we no longer look for Jesus among the dead,
for he is alive and has become the Lord of life.
From the waters of death you raise us with him
and renew your gift of life within us.
Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ and help us to grow as your people
toward the fullness of eternal life with you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

COFFEE AND DONUTS
Reflecting the Gospel

“Oh, I see!” someone may say to us. Little children play peek-a-boo and say “I see you!” “Go and see who’s at the door,” a parent might say to one of their youngsters. The word “see” has many meanings, although in one way or another they are all related. When we “see” in the literal sense of using our eyes, we mean to regard or notice something. Metaphorically, to see means to comprehend, understand, have something dawn on us; it always implies an awakening.
As Thomas says to the other disciples in this Sunday’s gospel, he
must see the risen Lord for himself, or he “will not believe.” Thomas is actually bridging the literal and metaphoric meanings. He wants to “see” in the sense of real-he wants to put his “finger into the nailmarks and put his hand into his side.” He also wants to go from disbelief to belief. With the appearance of the risen Lord on Easter evening, the disciples (less Thomas) pass over from fear to rejoicing, from disbelief to belief. This transformation, however, is incomplete-a week later, the disciples are still hiding behind locked doors. Yet the risen Lord does not abandon them, but continues to make his presence known not only to the disciples who saw him the week before, but now also to Thomas who is present, sees, and comes to belief. This is good news for us. No matter how halting our belief in the resurrection, the risen Lord is relentless in leading us to belief and to the new life this belief brings. Thomas is a convenient stand-in for all of us as we strive to deepen our belief in the risen Lord. Unlike Thomas, however, we do not literally “see” the risen Lord. We do encounter Christ in the ministry of the believing community: being of “one heart and mind,” bearing “witness,” sharing our goods so that there is “no needy person among” us. This is also how the risen Lord comes among us: in those in need, in those who reach out in self-giving to help those in need. Going from disbelief to belief is not a mental exercise. It is encountering the risen Lord in the people and circumstances around us.

GOSPEL LIVING
April Focus:
Fortitude
Discipleship is not easy. The ideals Jesus has given us are inspiring and can fill our hearts with joy. How wonderful the world would be if everyone’s choices and actions were based on love for others? The reality is that this is very hard to do. We have all sorts of reasons for excluding individuals and even whole groups of people from our “list” of those who are to be loved. It is often easier to focus on our differences rather than remembering that we are God’s children and members of one family. Human nature is such that even when we firmly believe in a basic principle and know what is the right thing in light of that principle, we often give in to the pressures around us and do the opposite. What is needed is fortitude (courage). It is listed as one of the four cardinal (or pivotal) virtues and it is often symbolized as a lion. (The others are prudence, justice and temperance.) Fortitude is the ability to confront fear, pain, risk, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. There are basically two types: Physical courage which allows us to face physical pain, hardship, or the threat of death. Moral courage which gives us the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, scandal, or discouragement. As we deepen in our understanding of what it truly means to follow Christ, we can feel we are being asked to do the impossible. Remember, that we are not alone in our struggle to become true disciples. We have been given the Holy Spirit to help and guide us. Even our failures can strengthen us, if we acknowledge them and see what caused our failure so that we can be more prepared the next time. Fortitude is one of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and we should pray daily for this virtue. It can help us when we confront difficult situations or decisions, to ask ourselves: How would Jesus handle this? Then pray for the fortitude to do as he would.

RENOVATION MASS PREPARATION TEAMS

We are in need of 4 groups of 4-5 people per group from each of our celebrated Mass times to be trained for the responsibility of setting up and putting away for each Mass while we are in the Gym. There will be a meeting on Tuesday, April 28th at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium to prepare for this time. If you would like to be one of the teams for Renovation Mass Preparation call Sara at the office, 503-266-9411.

The address for St. Paul Catholic Church: 1410 Pine Street, Silverton, Oregon, 97381.
LOST AND FOUND
Have you lost a few items in church? We have a small collection of items growing in the back of church. Here is a list of items that we have currently collected: eye glasses, books, hats, hair bands among other items. These items can be found in the basket located in the book shelf in the vestibule of the church. Jewelry items can be found in the Parish Office. Take a few minutes after Mass and see if we have found your item.
LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

Belief always goes beyond what we can prove, and often means we must go out on a limb. Belief can make us vulnerable; for example, we can be taken advantage of or we might gain a reputation for being gullible. Belief in the risen Lord means that we die to self so that we can encounter the risen Lord around us. This means, at times, that we ourselves might have “nail marks” or we might be wounded. Dying to self always runs a risk of being vulnerable. So it was with Jesus. Out of his vulnerability, love, and self-giving came risen life!
The challenge of this Sunday’s gospel is that we put aside our own fears and embrace belief, with all it consequences. Just as the risen Lord was relentless in bringing the disciples from disbelief to belief, so is he with us. He is also just as relentless with us as he was with the disciples in bringing them to the cross. Even after his resurrection, Jesus always challenges us to both dying and rising.
Having passed over from our Lenten discipline to Easter rejoicing doesn’t mean that we can forget about the dying required for living the paschal mystery. Now, however, our “seeing” is heightened: we have experienced once again Easter joy, a glimpse and promise of the fullness to come.
