Reflecting the Gospel

2

How many of us haven’t seen someone with absolutely perfectly styled and groomed hair, and we have a wild urge to rumple it? Or we’re out for a walk and come across a perfectly manicured lawn-don’t we have the urge to kick off our shoes and shuffle through it? Or maybe we’ve heard ourselves utter this or a similar prayer: “ O God, please give [so and so] just one fault so I can relate!” Perfection is something we humans have a hard time with. Probably this is so because we know we’re not perfect-we are the children of the Fall. Yet how often don’t we equate holiness with perfection? Don’t we think we have to be perfectly good to be holy? No wonder this feast can be so difficult for some; after all, the Holy Family was made up of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. How can we ever be holy like they? Although our questions are natural, our tendency toward a narrow kind of answer that ultimately presumes we are surely not very holy shortchanges what God has begun in Christ Jesus and continues through us. God’s promise of salvation comes to fulfillment through the enfleshment of human life: the son born to Abraham and Sarah, the Child parented by Mary and Joseph and tenderly recognized by Simeon and Anna. This promise continues to be enfleshed today as we grow in holiness. As the gospel shows, the operative word here is “grow.” “The child grew and became strong. . .” This simple affirmation about the Child says something about the whole mystery of the Incarnation, about families, about each one of us, and about holiness. Mary and Joseph, no doubt, grew into their role as parents of Jesus, beginning with their fulfilling the prescriptions of the law when they took him to the Temple to “present him to the Lord.” The gospel tells us that the “child grew and became strong.” Even Jesus, the Son of God, grew-physically, as he grew from baby to child to adult, but also spiritually as he grew into taking up his saving mission. We grow as individuals and as a human family as we ourselves respond to the many different ways God calls us to holiness. This is the meaning of the Incarnation: growth in God’s ways. This the meaning of holiness: not perfection, but our willingness to be open to God’s promptings and grow in our relationships with God and each other. Holiness, then, is not a state of perfection to be achieved, but an openness to God’s presence and promptings.

Please take a moment to send a word of thanks to Carlos, Randy and Lynn for their wonderful donation to our parish.

WINTER WEATHER POLICY
The winter weather is already here and it is a great time to be reminded of our winter weather policy here at St. Patrick Church. If the Canby School District closes all public schools in our area, then all activities for St. Patrick for that day are cancelled. If children are sent home in the middle of the day, then all activities for that day will also be cancelled here at St. Patrick.

SHELTER FROM THE COLD
Bethany Evangelical Church located at 450 S. Ivy Street here in Canby, has opened their doors to offer a hot meal, a safe warm bed and a shower for those who are without housing or shelter. There are beds available for single men, single women, and married couples. This is a free Warm Shelter available to anyone in need. The shelter is open after 5:00pm each evening during these freezing nights. If you see, here, or know of anyone in need of safety and a warm bed, please refer them to Bethany Evangelical.

VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK
January 11-16 is National Vocations Awareness Week. This is a time when all Catholics are asked to think about their vocation and especially, to encourage someone you think has the gifts to become a priest or religious. Locally, there is good news! There are 150 men studying to be priests at Mount Angel Seminary, the largest Catholic seminary in the western United States. Seven of these men are scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood in June. This is the largest class of priests to be ordained in the Archdiocese of Portland in over 20 years! Please keep praying for more men and women to respond to God’s call to enter the priesthood and religious life.

At the birth of the Son,
there was a great shouting in Bethlehem;
for the Angels came down,
and gave praise there.
Their voices were a great thunder:
at that voice of praise
the silent ones came,
and gave praise to the Son.
