Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS February 1, 2009

5

Father in heaven,
from the days of Abraham and Moses
until this gathering of your Church in prayer,
you have formed a people in the image of your Son.
Bless this people with the gift of your kingdom.
May we serve you with our every desire
and show love for one another
even as you have loved us.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

IN SYMPATHY
Please keep in your prayers Gladys Ferguson the mother of Marsha Meyerhofer who passed away this past week. Her memorial Mass will be Thursday, February 5 at 7:00pm at St. Patrick Church.

ARCHBISHOP’S CATHOLIC APPEAL 2009
“IMITATE CHRIST”
Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal will receive a mailing from Archbishop Vlazny within the next few days. At all Masses next weekend, additional information will be provided in the bulletin insert. The Appeal provides funds to support essential parish-based ministries that would find it difficult, if not impossible, to operate solely on parish funds.
Appeal funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan offices and agencies that assist the parishes and their people. In addition a part of the funds are used to assist retired archdiocesan priests.
The theme of the 2009 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is “Imitate Christ.” As you consider the amount you can pledge to help these ministries, please reflect on the following:

*Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is one concrete way to Imitate Christ. . .compassion, kindness, and self sacrifice.

*Take a moment to honestly examine all the God-given blessings in your life and then ask not yourself, but ask God: “What is just?”

*By our baptism and our confirmation in the Catholic church, each of us is called to serve as a good shepherd. We’re called not only to follow Christ but to be Christ.

Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider the above reflections, and please give generously according to the blessings God has given you.

Reflecting the Gospel

4

Three year old Caitlin was used to going to Mass, and her parents took time to teach her and coax her into acceptable behavior. Most Sundays she was pretty good. One Sunday, however, the music was particularly lively and it really caught her fancy. She was all ears and eyes as she riveted on the choir, joining them in all things including rhythmic moving: her little arms and hands were tapping out the beat and her little back end was going to and fro just as fast as she could make it go. Her rambunctiousness lasted pretty much the whole liturgy. At the end of Mass, she looked up at her mother and asked, Mommy, help me behave in church.” Who knows whatever prompted this little child to conclude that she had misbehaved, but her question also indicated something important about the relationship of child and parent: the child looked to her parent as one in authority-one who could teach her. In the gospel for this Sunday the people were ‘astonished” and “amazed” at Jesus’ teaching. They exclaimed that “he taught them as one having authority.” In both the case of Caitlin and of the people in the gospel, “authority” is not perceived as a negative power over, but as investing one with the wisdom and graciousness to have people’s good at heart. Jesus’ authority rests in his identity as the “Holy One of God”- indeed, his identity as the divine Son. The “new teaching with authority” about which the people are amazed is not the healing miracle in itself, but rather the display of God’s face-to-face presence mediated in Jesus. The Old Testament prophets were looked to by the people to mediate God’s presence and will; they were terrified to encounter God face to face. In Jesus, however, God is present and encounter with this God is not terrifying but astonishing and amazing. We, too, are privileged to encounter Jesus, and come to hear and know the Holy One’s healing and compassion. God is not terrifying, but gentle and loving. In the first reading, the people ask for a prophet to speak to them of the ways of God because to face God directly is so terrifying. In the gospel the people come in contact with Jesus, in whose person they actually do come face to face with God-now no longer so terrifying but, rather, astonishing and amazing. The Good News of the gospel is that God’s promise is fulfilled in Jesus who comes as our own “kin”, speaking and acting with true authority and power. Jesus’ authority and power was always exercised with the good of the people at heart. No wonder his “fame spread everywhere” and people sought to be near him!
