Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS February 22, 2009

lent season

Almighty God,
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
faith in your word is the way to wisdom,
and to ponder your divine plan is to grow in the truth.
Open our eyes to your deeds,
our ears to the sound of your call,
so that our every act may increase our sharing
in the life you have offered us.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS
All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent and Ash Wednesday. All Catholics between ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed.

EMBER DAY
Wednesday, March 11 is an Archdiocesan Ember Day. Traditionally, Ember Days are days of prayer and fasting. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed. Observance of the Ember Day is encouraged but no obligatory.

Reflecting the Gospel

Jesus healing the paralytic

We are all familiar with “iconic” brands, names so familiar there is immediate recognition. For example, Cheerios and Wheaties have almost become recognizable for cereal in general: “Have your had your Wheaties this morning?” Some brands are so recognizable brand names is the common sense approach not to change anything in the marketing-can one imagine Cheerios not being in a yellow box? In marketing, the attitude is “don’t challenge the mother lode!” If they ploy works, leave it alone; don’t change it. Yet, often change is good for us. This Sunday’s first reading and gospel both speak of change in terms of something new happening-divine forgiveness.
As the gospel story unfolds, we come to see that the man carried to Jesus on a mat actually suffered from two types of paralysis: physical and spiritual. Jesus looks beyond the physical paralysis of the man, and offers him the deeper healing he really needs: forgiveness. Like the actions of God toward the Israelites, Jesus frees the paralytic from the past and opens a brand new start in life. Forgiveness makes possible seeing something new that is happening. What is new is a whole new relationship with God - in the first reading God speaks of a “people I formed for myself.” God desires such intimacy with us that forgiveness becomes an expression of divine presence, for in the first reading Do announces that God wiped out Israel’s offenses “for my own sake.” Transgressions cause a breach in the relationship; God always acts to heal the breach, so long as we turn back toward God.
Along with the crowd in the gospel, we are astounded each time Jesus acts in the same way today to forgive us. Forgiveness is a divine act and presence that evokes a response of praise and the announcement that something new is happening. What is the “something new” that this gospel announces? That Good News is forgiveness and that God’s forgiveness offers us a new start in life.

WHAT HAPPENING

5

IT’S ABOUT TIME to give you an update on the capital campaign. A qualified “Whooho” is in order-thank you everyone, we are nearly there!! The qualification comes only because while we have successfully raised $400,00 in pledges, we don’t actually have $400, 000 in the bank. We all still have to pay off our pledges to be really, finally, and completely done with fundraising. However, Dave Muck and Frances Parker are full of trust. Dave is our project manager and Frances is our interior designer. They have been hard at work seeking and evaluating new bids. The plan is to begin work on June 1st and be finished in 3 weeks. Anyone who has been involved in a remodeling or construction project knows that planning and ordering supplies often takes more time than the job itself. For instance, the windows have to be ordered by March 1st if they are to be here by June! If you haven’t donated yet and you are wondering if you have missed your opportunity to be a part of this exciting project, listen up. The Building Advisory has a long list of projects we couldn’t afford and if we can drum up enough extra cash, they will pick one from the list. Questions: call Fr. John at 503-266-9411 or Susan Gallagher 503-312-5425.

A FAMILY SUNDAY EVENT
St. Patrick Ladies Club is sponsoring a Family Game afternoon this afternoon, Sunday, February 22nd starting at 1:00pm in the Parish Center following the Men’s Club Breakfast. The ladies will provide games, coffee and punch. Bring your favorite snack. All parishioners are invited to this special afternoon.

ARE YOU MISSING A DISH?
Thank you for helping with food for the many funerals. We still have some dishes that have not been reclaimed. Check the back table in the Parish Center as you come over for breakfast or to play games on Sunday.

SHROVE TUESDAY
Come and enjoy a pancake dinner on Shrove Tuesday, February 24th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Parish Center. Pancakes with strawberries, sausage, apple sauce, juice & coffee. Adults $4.00, children 12 and under $2.00 and preschool children free. This special dinner is put on by the Women’s club, Men’s club and Knights of Columbus.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
In the Our Father we pray that God forgive us as we forgive others. More important than “measuring” God’s offer of forgiveness by our own, this lin eof the prayer reminds us that forgiving is a divine act of mercy. When we forgive others we are acting in/by God’s power and, with God, bringing about something new. Through baptism we are adopted as sons and daughters fo God and share in God’s divine life. There is no better way for us to proclaim our own share in divinity than by forgiving others. And each time we forgive, we proclaim the Gospel. Forgiveness is not easy. It is a kind of dying to self because we must “remember not” past hurts and allow change, allow a new relationship to grow. Our acts of forgiving are a proclamation of the paschal mystery, an announcement that something new is happening-a broken relationship is restored. Together, as Body of Christ, we can once again give full-throated praise and glory to God.
