Almighty, eternal God,
when the Spirit descended upon Jesus
at his baptism in the Jordan,
you revealed him as your own Son.
Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit,
faithful to our calling.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you the Holy Spirit,
One God for ever and ever.
Amen

how-and-tell is generally a popular time in elementary school classrooms and this for at least two reasons. First, education research has revealed that we learn best by concrete, hands-on experiences. When the children can see and touch some object, their curiosity is roused, questions come easily, and they are usually eager to run home after school and tell others about the experience. Second, show-and tell is popular because it boosts the self-esteem of the little one doing the explaining in front of the class. Something significant to the child is shared with others, and the interest of the classmates encourages the child and makes him or her feel important. Show-and-tell is a manifestation of good learning technique and the worth of an individual. This Sunday’s gospel tells of a kind of show-and-tell on the part of both Jesus and us. It manifests who we are and how we have been gifted. As Jesus was baptized by John, so must we be baptized-not just in the waters of repentance and forgiveness but by the Holy Spirit and fire, which calls us to give ourselves for the good of others. Thus the gospel speaks of two baptisms. The first is the event this feast celebrates: the baptism Jesus received at the hands of John. The second is the baptism that we receive “with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Jesus’ baptism revealed him as “beloved Son”; our own baptism reveals us as ones who are saved, renewed, justified, and heirs of eternal life. This feast, then, is an epiphany not only of who Jesus is but also of who we are. We are baptized with the Spirit who is the divine presence within us. We are also baptized with fire that burns within us so that we are ignited with ardor, commitment, intensity, energy, drive toward a goal-by the very goodness of our lives, being a faithful divine presence for others. Our baptism, then is a dynamic and energetic embracing of our own graced identity as God’s own people expressed through a Gospel way of life. The fire with which we are baptized surely must make us “eager to do what is good” .

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Being baptized by “the Holy Spirit and fire” means that we share in Jesus’ mission, including the total gift of ourselves. Who we are manifests God’s presence in the very dying to self we do each day as we conform ourselves to God’s will. Like the simple show-and-tell time in the classroom mentioned above, we learn from experiencing and encountering the Divine through others. In this our own self-esteem is boosted when we realize that we ourselves are God’s presence for another.
The gift of divine life and its attendant call to self-giving discipleship does make demands on us. Taking our baptism seriously means that the ritual moment is just the beginning of a lifetime of openness to God’s continuing grace “training” us to be faithful to who God has made us to be. God’s giving us a share in divinity is so gracious that the only response is dying to self in fidelity to our baptismal call. Further, living our baptism and the paschal mystery means that while our life manifests dying for the sake of others, we also manifest the hope that is sure because God’s ultimate gracious act toward us is the offer of everlasting life, a promise already being fulfilled.
