Weekly Bulletin
SUNDAY MASS January 11, 2009

Almighty, eternal God,
when the Spirit descended
upon Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan,
you revealed him as your own beloved Son.
Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit,
faithful to our calling.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
Amen
IN SYMPATHY
Please keep in your prayers David Nelke the brother of Marie Trumm who passed away this week. Please remember to keep all of our parishioners and loved ones who have passed away in our thoughts and prayers.
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN
Next week’s collection ( January 17 & 18) supports the Bishops Catholic Communication Campaign. For more than 25 years, the CCC has been spreading the Gospel message locally and nationally on radio, television, in print, and on the internet. It is only through donations from Catholic parishioners that the work of the CCC is possible. Half of the collection will remain in our archdiocese. Please contribute generously to the Campaign by using the attached envelope.
IT’S ABOUT TIME CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
In the past two weeks another 74 families have donated toward our IT’S ABOUT TIME capital campaign. Our goal is drawing ever closer and it’s great to see the parish responding to the project. By this time next year we will be able to invite friends and relatives who need access to a handicapped restroom to Mass, weddings, and funerals. In the gloomy cold months of winter 2009/10 we can read missals by new and safer lights, have better heat, and walk on new carpets. Thank you for your generosity as we continue towards our goal. Remember that you can make gifts of stock or IRS distributions for this project. Call Fr. John at 503-266-9411 or Susan Gallagher at 503-263-6456 if you have questions.
TRACTOR TRAILER MISSING
We are missing our tractor trailer that normally is parked on our premises and is used to transport our mower back and forth to the cemetery. If you borrowed this trailer, please return it ASAP by Wednesday, January 14, 2009.
WHAT GOES UP - MUST COME DOWN!
The end of Christmas Work Party is scheduled for Saturday, January 17 from 9:00am until finished. Everyone is invited to come and take down Christmas.
Reflecting the Gospel

Several times in our lives we might be asked to produce a copy of our baptismal certificates; for example, at our First Communion and confirmation or at marriage or ordination or entrance into religious life. Having a certificate and producing it when needed might lead us to believe that baptism is something that happened in the past-it is over and finished with and this certificate bears witness to that fact. It is good to recall, though, that what happened in the past that is over and completed is the ritual ceremony of baptism. But that is surely not all there is to baptism. An essential tenet of Christianity is that baptism plunges us into an ongoing way of living whereby our lives are patterned after Christ’s. This Sunday’s gospel gives us a picture of who Jesus is and that following him means taking up his saving mission-the everyday, practical way we live our baptism all our lives. After he was “baptized in the Jordan by John,” Jesus took up his saving mission as the “beloved Son.” That saving mission is no less than calling each of us to such an intimate identity with Jesus that we are transformed by the new life of God that dwells within us. We are baptized by both water and the Spirit, beginning a life of turning from our thoughts and ways to God’s thoughts and ways, becoming God’s children, and continuing Jesus’ ministry. By the indwelling of the Spirit we become adopted sons and daughters of God, God’s “beloved,” too. By this indwelling-God’s very life-Jesus’ mission is our own mission. Jesus’ way of living is our own way of living. Baptism is not so much what is done to us as what we are able to do because of our new relationship through the Spirit with God and each other. Only by opening ourselves to the action of God within us through the Spirit are we able to take up Jesus’ saving mission. Indeed, baptism is more than receiving a certificate attesting that we have gone through a ceremony and are “card-carrying” members of the Body of Christ. Our baptismal commitment entails taking up Christ’s saving mission.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
To be initiated into Christianity means to be initiated into living the paschal mystery. Each of the readings incorporates allusions to paschal mystery dying and rising. In the gospel, “the heavens being torn open” is the same language as is used at the crucifixion (cf. Mark 15:38: “The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom”). The first reading from Isaiah 55 is one used at the Easter Vigil and speaks poetically and eloquently of the abundance God gives now and in everlasting life. These two readings clearly show us the dying and promised new life of the paschal mystery. Moreover, the responsorial psalm speaks of God as savior, reminding us that from all time, no matter how often we have strayed, God wishes to reach out to us in loving relationship. The second reading reminds us that Jesus “came through water and blood,” yet another image reminding us of the lengths to which God will go to make us a holy people.
At his baptism Jesus took up his saving mission as the beloved Son. At our own baptism we unite ourselves with Christ as his Body (becoming God’s children) and commit ourselves to take up this same saving mission. At the heart of this mission is being faithful to the relationship with God that our baptism begins, and proclaiming to others God’s continued mighty deeds undertaken for our salvation.
