Almighty and ever-present Father,
your watchful care reaches from end to end
and orders all things in such power
that even the tensions and the tragedies of sin
cannot frustrate your loving plans.
Help us to embrace your will,
give us the strength to follow your call,
so that your truth may live in our hearts
and reflect peace to those who believe in your love.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen

Plenty of love is evident at a wedding. Of course, there’s the love between the bride and groom. And there’s the love between the parents-as a couple as well as for their son or daughter. There’s grandparents’ and godparents’ love. Usually the maid of honor and best man have such a close relationship with the couple that we might speak of love far more than friendship. The gospel this Sunday is about a “wedding at Cana.” Mary and Jesus are guests there. As with all weddings, we might presume that love abounds. This wedding, however, is quite different. It is far more than a story about the couple and their big day. It is really a story about God’s big day! Why does John begin with a wedding story? What, really, is the wedding? What, really, is the sign? This first manifestation of why Jesus came among us summarizes his whole saving mission, and so John uses this occasion at the beginning of Jesus’ public life to give us an overview of the meaning and purpose of Jesus’ whole life. All Jesus’ life and actions are directed toward his saving work, culminating in his death and resurrection-and our response to this is “to believe in him.” Our believing is our own action of entering into Jesus’ saving work. The wedding feast was an opportunity for epiphany and belief. John uses the wedding as a metaphor to manifest to us that there is a new wine among us. The readings taken together intimate that the marriage is between heaven and earth, divinity and humanity, God and us. The sign is how obedience leads to glory, dying to rising, believing to abundance. The purpose of using wedding imagery runs deep: the sign “revealed Jesus’ glory.” If water changed to wine can reveal Jesus’ glory, how much more can changed hearts reveal it! The first reading gives us a hint about why Jesus had to reveal his glory: so that we might “be called by a new name,” that is, God’s “Delight” and Espoused.” The epiphany of Jesus’ glory is a sign of the persistence of God’s overtures of love to us-God reveals glory to us in many ways to make sure we catch it-and the depths of God’s love, so much that we are espoused to God.

LOOKING FOR WORK / LOOKING FOR HELP

Are you needing someone to do work around your house or yard? Do you need help getting Christmas put away or the gutters cleaned? Do you have need for temporary farm or field help? Perhaps the answer to your help needs is right here in your community. The bulletin board in the Auditorium of the parish center has a space for postings from people who are looking for work. If you have jobs that need to be done, but you don’t have time to do them, then this might be the answer. Check it out. In getting your extra jobs done you can help the many members of our faith community with needed employment. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Corinthians, “God put our bodies together in such a way that even the parts that seem the least important are valuable. He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others. If one part of our body hurts, we hurt all over. If one part of our body is honored, the whole body will be happy.” I Cor 12: 24b-26.

MASS AT HOPE VILLAGE
The monthly Mass at Hope Village is Wednesday, January 20. Mass begins at 10:30 am and is held in the library of the Assisted Living portion of the facility. Visitors are asked to park on the side and back parking lots, please.
