Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS January 18, 2009

1

Almighty and ever-present Father,
your watchful care reaches from end to end
and orders all things in such power
that even the tensions and the tragedies of sin
cannot frustrate your loving plans.
Help us to embrace your will,
give us the strength to follow your call,
so that your truth may live in our hearts and
reflect peace to those who believe in your love.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

MONTHLY MASS AT HOPE VILLAGE

You are invited to join in celebrating Mass with those members of our parish community who are unable to join us at our regular Sunday liturgies. The Mass is held in the Library of the Assisted Living section of Hope Village. Mass time is 10:30am.

HAND-CRAFTED ROSARIES ON SALE TO SUPPORT THE UNEMPLOYED
Beautiful hand-crafted rosaries are on sale following the masses in the vestibule of the church. These unique pieces are providing the initial funding to allow St. Patrick to establish a Unemployment Crisis Fund. This fund will be used to assist families from our parish community with utility bills in the event of job loss. These rosaries are the generous gift of an RCIA Candidate for Full Communion. Take an opportunity to stop by the table and see them, you’ll be glad you did!

Reflecting the Gospel

2

Good parents become visibly anxious if they suspect their son or daughter is becoming involved with a cult. We hear occasionally in the news of the extreme measures to which some parents go to remove their youngster from a cult and put them through “deprogramming” - often forcing them to do so. We might wonder what is the attraction of such groups, when it appears to us “uninitiated” how unhealthy they are. One attraction common to all cults is a charismatic leader-one who can mesmerize, instill ideals (be they good ones or wrong ones), coalesce individual energies into a community, motivate members to a common mission. Allegiance is never a problem; question the leader and there are dire consequences. Ideally, we who profess to follow Jesus would not have an allegiance problem, either; but, in fact, we struggle all our lives with fidelity to our call to be disciples. Clearly the problem isn’t with the One whom we follow-Jesus is a charismatic leader who inspires the loftiest of ideals and the most radical of communities-we share membership in his own Body. John the Baptist must have been a charismatic leader as well, for the gospel mentions his “standing...with his disciples.” Yet how easily John was able to divert the two disciples with him from himself to Jesus; Why? No doubt because his announcement, “Behold, the Lamb of God” was so believable. No doubt, too, because John’s own allegiance was also to Christ. John knew that his mission was to announce the coming of the Messiah. He never wavered from his mission-he was about leading others to Christ. Both the first reading and the gospel illustrate the role of a mediator in discerning God’s call: Eli mediates God’s call to Samuel and in the gospel, John mediates God’s call to Andrew, who then mediates the call to Simon Peter. While the role of the mediator is important, a faithful response to God’s call is vastly more important-it is absolutely essential for anyone who claims to be a disciple of Jesus. Hearing and responding to God’s call focuses clearly whom we follow: Samuel, the servant of Eli, becomes the servant of the Lord; the followers of John become disciples of Jesus. For us, too, hearing and responding to God’s call sharpens our allegiance: we choose to follow Christ and to take up his mission

PRESIDENTS DAY BLESSING

Dear God,
we ask today for your blessing on our president.
Enlighten his mind,
so that he makes wise decisions
that affect us and the world.
Enkindle in his soul a thirst for justice,
not only based upon a party platform,
but upon the eternal truths you have revealed to us.
Inspire him to look upon the most vulnerable of us,
and treat the unborn, the poor,
and those seen as worthless,
as deserving every right and dignity
give to men and women created in your image.
Amen

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
We cannot truly be disciples of Christ unless we, too, hear God’s call and respond by transforming our lives, evidenced in the simple willingness to be obedient to God’s will and take up the saving mission of Christ. This means more than keeping commandments or even of simply going to Mass on Sunday; it means that our whole lives are directed to being faithful in our allegiance to Christ and identifying with him so completely that his life is ours, his mission is ours.
We waver in our allegiance because identity with Christ and continuing his mission make demands on us. Like Andrew in the gospel, we must boldly announce the presence of Christ in our midst and bring others to Jesus. We do this best by living as he did: caring for others, bringing a healing touch, working at developing a deeper relationship with Christ through liturgy and prayer. The demand is surely there: become so intimate with Jesus that we do not waver in our allegiance to and love for him.
