St. Patrick Catholic Church Gospel Reflectaion Jan 23 2011

Candles come in all shapes, sizes, and fragrances. Judging from the amount of space given for candle displays in inexpensive stores, candles are popular as decorations in our homes. When we invite someone over for a special dinner we probably have candles burning on the set table and perhaps one or more in the living room. But when the electricity goes out after dark and a single candle is lit, this little light makes all the difference in the world. Isn't it amazing how one little candle can shine so brightly in darkness but be barely noticed in light? In the gospel for this Sunday Jesus goes to "the region of Zebulun and Naphtali," land of the Gentiles and, therefore, considered a land of darkness to Jews of that time. It is as though Jesus goes to a place of darkness so the light of his Good News won't be missed but can shine brightly. Here in this region of darkness he begins his saving work. In the darkness he shines brightly, reminding us that God desires all of us to see "a great light." God desires all of us to repent of the darkness in our lives and come to the Light who is Savior. As Jesus begins his public ministry, he issues two commands: "Repent" and "Come after me." The gospel suggests that both repentance and following Jesus are ways to walk in the light that reveal the kingdom of heaven at hand. The kingdom of heaven is neither earthly realm nor distant place. The kingdom of heaven is present in our response to Jesus. It is our willing obedience to hear him call, to leave everything, to follow him without counting the costs. The "kingdom of heaven is at hand" when we turn from darkness and not only walk in the light but also become that light ourselves. How does "repent" open one to heed Jesus' call to follow him and become the light? We must be able to see the light who is our Savior before we can be light for others. To see and embrace the light is already following Jesus. So, one way to think about repentance is that it is turning from darkness so we can see the light. By changing our minds about the behaviors that bring darkness, we are able to focus on the light that then shines brightly enough for us to follow-becoming the light ourselves.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
We shrink from darkness; we don't like it. We shrink from repentance; we don't like it either, because to repent means that we must embrace a life of self-giving. Seeing the light is actually much easier than following the light! John's faithfulness in preaching Jesus as the Messiah led him to prison and death. Jesus' preaching about God's kingdom at hand led him to the cross and death. If we follow the light, we know what awaits us: dying to self. Yet dying is the only way we ourselves can become the light that shines for others. Following the light is a metaphor for repentance because the light takes us where we would rather not go. But it is only this light that brings us everlasting life. This is why we repent and follow.
Just as one candle can dispel darkness, so can the little light each of us is dispel the darkness of sin and confusion, indifference and selfishness, greed and despair that tend to surround us. All we need to do is heed Jesus' two commands: repent and follow.

FIVE PART SERIES ON FAMILY GUIDE FOR USING MEDIA

The office of Media Relations from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has produced a Family Guide for Using Media. This is the third of Five parts of this publication:

The use of media involves moral choices. Here are ten actions or attitudes that can guide parents as media consumers to affirm Christian values:

Use your Intelligence. As entertaining and useful as the media can be, they should not be accepted uncritically or thoughtlessly. In subtle and not so subtle ways, most media convey moral messages. Reflect on what ethical standards the media are using. What is portrayed and why? What is it saying about human existence? How does it relate to Christian faith and moral belief? If something seems shocking, is anything of value also being conveyed? Is comedy used for genuine amusement or merely as a put-down? How are you and your family reacting to your media choices? Are you benefitting from them?

Talk back to the media. All too often we experience media, especially television and film, as one-way communication. Get in the habit of using television, film, and other media to start a dialogue. Where media are interactive, you can engage in an actual dialogue. Where they aren't, you can contact networks, local stations, and newspapers to compliment or complain how the media are or are not helping you as a parent. The dialogue can also go on in your family. For example, a television drama can start you asking one another, "What would you have done or said in that situation? Why?'

Set your own agenda. The mass media, especially news programming, tend to set the public agenda. They tell us what issues deserve our attention; they highlight certain people and social and political options. Think about this media-set agenda. Does it reflect what is truly important? Are you hearing the things that matter to you and your family? Choose the media that serve your needs rather than just tuning in or logging on. Help your children to pick good programming instead of surfing through what's there.

Next week-continuation of the ten actions or attitudes for parents to use in helping families use the media wisely.
