Weekly Bulletin
SUNDAY MASS January 25, 2009

Almighty Father,
the love you offer always exceeds
the furthest expression of our human longing,
for you are greater than the human heart.
Direct each thought, each effort of our life,
so that the limits of our faults and weaknesses
may not obscure the vision of your glory
or keep us from the peace you have promised.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. .
Amen
IN SYMPATHY
Please keep in your prayers Bertha Mansker the wife of Rod Mansker who passed away this past week.
IT’S ABOUT TIME to start getting new bids for our parish remodel. We have raised $396,000!!! We are almost there! Just $4,000 to go, which is just four $1000 gifts, ten $400 gifts, or 100 $40 gifts. We can do it! Every gift, no matter the size, counts. Green envelopes are in today’s bulletin and in the back of the church for your convenience. Keep the gifts coming in and thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has pledged and donated already. If you have any questions about the project or making a donation call Fr. John at 503-266-9411 or Susan Gallagher at 503-312-5425.

Reflecting the Gospel

In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus invited two pairs of brothers-Simon and Andrew, James and John to change. To a huge change! They left their nets-their livelihood, their familiar life-to follow Jesus. Now rather than be fishermen, they would be followers of Jesus who fish for a far greater catch: calling others to follow Jesus as well. Jesus’ first words recorded in the Gospel of Mark call us to repentance and belief. We usually think repentance means turning from sinfulness toward God. And, indeed, this is the point of the first reading which tells how the Ninevites “turned from their evil way.” The gospel, however, suggests another meaning: repentance means to change. The disciples “repented” when they left all and followed Jesus. Repentance-the willingness to change our thoughts and ways to those of God-is the foundation for daily Christian discipleship. We must cast aside whatever gets in the way of responding to Jesus’ call to follow him and share in his mission to bring the “kingdom of God. . at hand.” Moreover, the repentance called for in both the first reading and gospel is not possible without belief. The people of Nineveh heard Jonah’s threat and believed in God; the disciples heard Jesus’ call and believed in him. Following Jesus requires change, whether that be the radical one of leaving all to follow Jesus, or the more modest one of turning from the little everyday behaviors that cause us to focus on ourselves and our own needs rather than on Jesus and the needs of others. This means, of course, that this kind of change required for discipleship always has a cost. John preached repentance, and was arrested. Jesus preached the Gospel and suffered and died. Hearing Jesus’ call to discipleship and choosing to follow him faithfully does not assure us that we will not meet adversity and suffering, as did both John and Jesus. The surprise of the gospel is not that we will face adversity. The surprise is that in preaching repentance and accepting the change in and to our lives repentance entails, the “kingdom of God is at hand.” The change assures us of God’s presence. Adversity from accepting the Gospel does not thwart God’s presence; is hastens it.

JANUARY FOCUS:
Grace
God is constantly pouring forth His grace on all of us - believers and unbelievers, sinners and saints. As Catholics we are particularly fortunate because the Church provides us with many ways to acknowledge God’s grace and to understand how important it is in our lives. Grace is God’s gift to us assuring us of his constant love and care.
It nourishes and strengthens us so we are better able to do what is right and good. It opens our hearts and minds to God so that we may better understand what we are called to be and do. We are encouraged to pray for the grace we need. This is not because God only gives to those who ask. It is because when we acknowledge our need, we are more open to receive God’s grace. The grace is always available. It is our openness to receive it that is the obstacle. God does not require elaborate rituals, special prayers, or particular deeds. What God requires of us is openness and humility which will allow us to receive what he so desires to give us. We do all kinds of things to strengthen our bodies-special diets, vitamins, exercises, etc - but what do we do to strengthen our souls and our faith? Just how open are we to God’s grace? How do we instill a desire for God in children? Is attending Sunday Mass really enough? Could you eat only once a week? The Eucharist is the “diet” our souls need. Even if we cannot receive Communion, we can receive a spiritual communion any time. Prayer and studying our faith are the vitamins we need to deepen our understanding and commitment to do God’s will. We exercise our faith by doing good deeds, helping others, and respecting the people we encounter everyday. Consider how you will make yourself more open to God’s grace and how you will encourage this priority in the members of your family. Choose at least one practical thing you will do.
