July 4, 2010 bulletin
Father,
through the obedience of Jesus,
your servant and your Son,
you raised a fallen world.
Free us from sin
and bring us the joy that lasts for ever.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

2010 PARISH CAMP OUT
This is your last chance to sign up for the 2010 St. Patrick’s camp out at Fort Stevens State Park, near Astoria, from July 22nd through July 25th (Thursday thru Sunday). Currently, we have 12 families that have signed up and would love to fill the two remaining sites. Because we are using club camping, we cannot accept reservations after Thursday, July 15th. The fees for camping are $58, plus a share in the cost of food to be determined later. This camp out is a great way to get to know your parish family and have a great weekend at the coast. Please contact Duane and Chris Kloser at 503-266-4489 or laker1fan97013@yahoo.com.

4'th of July 2010

Birthdays are always times to celebrate life, to reminisce about growing up, to take stock of where we are and where we want to go. These kinds of reflections are a bit more difficult to do as a nation, but the Fourth of July does help us to pause and be grateful for all that we have as a country founded on principles of equality and freedom. Truly, we have an abundant harvest as a nation: supermarkets stacked to the ceiling with food; freedom of speech, press, assembly; blessings of resources, talents, strengths. At the same time we are well aware that not everyone shares equally in all this abundance-we still face appalling poverty, ghastly prejudices, gross abuse of power. Our abundance or lack of it is measured by such things as wealth, power, peace, poverty, oppression, discord. The gospel doesn’t talk about a country but about a “kingdom.” This kingdom is of God and, though very different from our country, it is just as “at hand.” In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus refers three times to an abundant harvest. The nature of this harvest is evident through the ministry of the disciples Jesus sends forth: peace, stability, nourishment, healing, rejoicing. This is no ordinary harvest of the fruits of the earth. This harvest is the fruit of God’s kingdom “at hand” through the very ministry of Jesus and his disciples. Moreover, the harvest is being reaped today through us who continue to go forth in Jesus’ name. Note that some of the abundant harvest goes to the laborer-disciples who are sent forth: they have the power to heal, are nourished, are welcomed, cast our demons, and rejoice. Some of the abundant harvest goes to those who receive the ministry: peace and healing. The abundant harvest of both laborers and recipients is a sign of God’s presence. And where God is present, there is God’s kingdom. Rather than being measured by spacious skies, prairies of ripe wheat, majestic mountains, sobering deserts, rivers and lakes replete with commerce, God’s kingdom is measured by the abundance of goodness, care for others, growth toward new life.

OUR PRAYERS FOR HOLINESS OF LIFE
*For those called to the priesthood by power of the Holy Spirit, that they will be filled with the courage and faith to respond to a life of service, we pray to the Lord.

*That the Lord of the Harvest may open the hearts of our young people to the possibility of a life in priesthood or religious life, we pray to the Lord.

*For all parishioners who have made a commitment to pray intensely for vocations, that their intercessory prayer for an increase of candidates for priesthood in our Diocese will be fruitful for the Church and they will be blessed for their efforts, we pray to the Lord.

*That God’s love might inspire all men and women to follow Christ’s footsteps more closely, we pray to the Lord.

The photos are so beautiful of all the children. He did an amazing job of capturing the moment for each child. They could be great presents for grandchildren.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PROGRAMS AVAILABLE
Scholarship funds are available for both Vacation Bible School and our Religious Education program. Please contact our parish office to discuss full or partial scholarships for any of our programs.

PRAYER FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
Dear God
,
as we celebrate today with fireworks and festivals,
help us never to forget the reason for our joy.
Help us remember that our rights to life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness
were signed into our heritage
with the willing blood of American patriots.
Most of all, help us remember
that the rights of all people
are more than words on a document,
and that all people have rights
because you have given us the dignity of human life.
Grant freedom to all,
and give us the strength to protect the rights of others.
Amen
