Father,
let the gift of your life
continue to grow in us,
drawing us from death to faith, hope, and love.
Keep us alive in Christ Jesus.
Keep us watchful in prayer
and true to his teaching
till your glory is revealed in us.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON
Our Coordinator of Religious Education, Connie Bilton-Smith, will be retiring as of August 1, 2010. Connie stepped in as Coordinator of RE at the unexpected departure of Sue Unger two years ago and has done an outstanding job in the role. While we will be sad to see her go she has promised she will not be “gone” but will continue to offer her many gifts and talents to the Religious Education programing. Connie has been a joy-filled blessing to the children and families of St. Patrick and we wish her all the good things of God as she and her husband enjoy retirement.

RE COORDINATOR 3/4 TIME POSITION OPEN
In conjunction with a $10,000 grant awarded to St. Patrick from the Office of Hispanic Ministry at the Archdiocese of Portland, St. Patrick is seeking a 3/4 time Coordinator of Religious Education to oversee our RE programing in English grades K-5 and in Spanish grades 1-6 with Sacramental Preparation. Spanish language is required in order to fulfill the stipulations of the grant funding. If you or someone you know is interested in this position please see Sara at the office, Tuesday - Friday, or call 503-266-9411 to speak with her.

PEST CONTROL
In March of this year, Termites were found in the walls of the Parish Center. As part of the treatment plan, baiting disks were placed around the entire building of the Parish Center. On recent inspection, some of these disks are either missing or pieces of them are missing. Please do not touch or remove these disks. They are an important part of the treatment plan. If you find any of the missing disk pieces, please contact the Parish Office.
Thank you!

PARISH STAFF
For the remaining summer months, the staff will be taking some time for their vacations to recharge and renew. Your calls are important to us and we will always respond to your calls as soon as possible. Please keep us in your prayers as we keep the parishioners of St. Patrick in our prayers.

Gospel reflection St. Patrick Web site Jul 18 2010

Hearing this familiar gospel story might lead us to jump to a hasty, either-or-kind of interpretation: Mary’s “better part” of listening, being taught, reflecting is a better choice than taking care of the usual daily chores! Jesus couldn’t have been negating hospitality and taking care of the needs of others, however. Perhaps a less hasty and more reflective interpretation of this gospel lies in another, more integrative direction: that “listening” must be more than sitting at Jesus’ feet-it includes seeing and hearing him in all the activities and circumstances of life. Sometimes we listen when we are being taught. Sometimes we listen when we are serving. The point is, we must listen: to Jesus, to each other. What is each of the people in the gospel story doing? Martha is serving; Mary is listening; Jesus is teaching. While Jesus says that Mary has the “better part,” this doesn’t necessarily mean that listening to Jesus is either the only or the easier part. Listening to Jesus with a heart truly able to hear is difficult, indeed. Listening to Jesus is the “better part” only when it leads us to serve and teach as Jesus himself did. The effectiveness of our serving is determined by the way we listen-to others, to Jesus through others. Martha’s “hospitality” was made edgy because of her becoming burdened with the cooking and serving and focusing only on that, losing sight of Jesus. Martha is settling to be only a servant, while Jesus is looking for disciples. Mary’s hospitality was more gracious than Martha’s because she focused her attention on Jesus: “sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him.” The surprise is that Jesus affirms that the “better part’ is to listen, the stance of a disciple. The “better part” is to be disciple, attuned to the Master! A welcoming hospitality implies an “at-homeness” and belonging that parallels the unique relationship of disciple to Master. This kind of discipleship hospitality always brings new life. The “better part” Jesus promises is not just listening and being a disciple, but it is also sharing the new life that Jesus offers with others. Discipleship and listening cannot be separated. Neither can listing and serving.

PRAYER FOR TRAVEL

God of our ancestors,
long ago you sent Abraham on a journey of faith
to a land promised to him and his descendents.
You led the people of Israel through the desert
to a land flowing with milk and honey
where they might live according to your covenant.
You continued to protect and guide your people,
sending Raphael to watch over Tobiah on his way
as he journeyed to fulfill his father's command.
Watch over us as we travel and keep us secure.
May your angels protect us on our journey
and lead us safely home at the end of our trip.
Let your provident hand guide us while we're gone
and upon our return may we offer you thanks
for your protection and watchfulness over our days.
Amen.
