  St. Magdalena

Father,
let the gift of your life
continue to grow in us,
drawing us from death to faith, hope, and love.
Keep us alive in Christ Jesus.
Keep us watchful in prayer
and true to this teaching
till your glory is revealed in us.
Grant this through Christ our lord.
Amen

Reflecting the Gospel

  The Lord is our Shephard

It’s the nature of most children to take their parents for granted. They expect mom and dad to take care of them and meet their every need at the drop of a hat. After these youngsters have grown up, marry, and have their own children, they might remark, “I just don’t know how my mom and dad did it.” They learn what an exhausting job parenting can be, and this on top of keeping up a home and holding down a job to pay the bills. We get the hint in this Sunday’s gospel that the apostles have now learned firsthand for themselves how demanding is the ministry of bringing the Good News of salvation to others, and how many exhausting demands have been placed on Jesus by the crowds. Last Sunday Jesus sent the apostles off on mission; this Sunday they face the harsh reality that the mission wears them out.
Jesus, the true shepherd of God, always responds to the needs of others: with a listening ear, food, and rest for the weary apostles; with teaching for the “vast crowd.” Jesus is ever the caring shepherd. Jeremiah is reproving the shepherds who mislead God’s people and scatter them; Jesus is the divine shepherd who both knows the needs of others and responds to them. By his own good example, Jesus teaches the disciples that caring relationships are at the heart of bringing his mission to completion. By paying attention to the needs of people can we serve them, giving them all they need to encounter the God who brings all good things to those who are open to divine presence.
As disciples of Jesus, we are both shepherds and sheep: like Jesus, we respond to those in need, as well as receive care when we are the ones in need. By this exchange of giving and receiving, we are no longer a scattered crowd, but a community of God’s people. Giving and receiving help form a bond of community because these mutual exchanges are essentially relational. In mutual relationship-characterized by giving and receiving-do we take up Jesus’ own example of self-giving for others as well as create the condition for receiving all that God offers us.

Parish Community News

OUR PRIVILEGE, OUR RIGHT, AND OUR DUTY

fg

As it is written ‘Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.’ (Is 49:15):
1We in the Catholic Church in the Community of St. Patrick remember, hold in our memory, and pray for the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces especially: Ryan Thomas Blackwood, Douglas Bower Jr., Ryan Bridges, Lonnie Brown, Nathan Brown,, Jeremy Burke, Carlos Bustamante, Adamm Creel, Isaiah Creel, David Davis, Brad Dunn, Brian Dykeman, Bill Ellis, Adam Ferrell, Andrew Gibby, David Hannon, April Kennedy, Patrick Kirsch, Mike Krzmarzick, Jessica Krzmarzick (wife of Michael Krzmarzick) Johnny Lugo, Adam Lulay, Alex Martin, Jordan Morelli, John Nguyen, Robert Nolan, Robert Selner, Tarl Spencer, John Suchanek, Leah Sundquist, Brian Thomas, Kenneth Thorpe, CJ Trillo, Jonathan Tuner, William Walsh, Erik Wiesehan, Ivan Wilson and John Zagyva, may they be servants of Christ through service to those in need, and may they be kept safe from all harm.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
We all need to go off to a “deserted place” occasionally to “rest a while.” Whether this means taking some time alone each day to pray and rest in God, making Sunday truly a day of rest, or setting aside a few days a year to make a retreat, all of us need time to regain our strength so we can take up our own shepherding tasks. If the mission overwhelms us, we are unable to persevere.
Achieving a balance between the work of discipleship and the need to rest from weariness can be no easy task in itself. Like Jesus, we are called to shepherd-to care, teach, heal, listen, etc. At the same time, we must know when it is time for us to be on the receiving end, to balance our work of sharing the Gospel with rest, with time to replenish our spirit and energy. Self-giving and rest are two parallel poles to the dying and rising dynamic of the paschal mystery. Too much dying can crush us. Too much rest can lull us into being uncaring shepherds.

GRADUATION BLESSING
Dear Lord,

the life that you have given us has many stages.
Please bless these young people today,
as they leave one stage of life and begin another.
Guide them as they finish this chapter
in the story you have written for them,
and begin a new one, written on a fresh page.
Help them to make the right choices, Lord.
May they always remember
that past choices need not sully a bright future,
nor good choices in the past
ensure that tomorrow will be carefree and easy.
Most of all, remind them, Lord, that no one’s story is fully lived
unless you are allowed to be its one, true author
by those who live it.

Amen
