Gospel Reflection June 6 2010

There is perhaps no more heart-wrenching sight than the malnourished and starving. We received pamphlets in the mail, see images on TV, bring nonperishable food staples to church to offer during the presentation of the gifts. We know there is food in abundance. We know that often the world hunger problem is tied into politics. And so when we celebrate this particular feast day and hear these particular readings, we are once more challenged to respond. Our own share in God’s abundant gifts demands that those gifts spill out for those in need. But the plight of the needy extends beyond food, and our response must extend beyond providing food because this festival is about more than even the sublime gift of Jesus giving himself to us in the Eucharist. This festival is about handing over life. Jesus’ gospel command is clear: we are to feed others. We give to others not from the “deserted place” of our own hearts but from the “leftover fragments” of God’s blessings. God’s abundant nourishment is most startlingly given in the handing over of Jesus’ life-on the cross, in the bread and wine. As Jesus’ followers we are to be God’s abundant nourishment for others by our own self-gift of life. God’s abundant giving continues in our own self-giving lives. The Twelve apparently still haven’t quite gotten this message of abundance and self-giving. They approach Jesus with the instruction to “dismiss the crowd”; this is clearly a practical response to a practical situation-a hungry, tired, large crowd. Jesus’ response makes clear God’s intention for us: “Give them some food yourselves.” Perhaps the amazement of this gospel and festival is that God so willingly chooses us humans to make known divine superabundance and blessing. The gospel moves from the practical, tangible level of feeding hungry people to the mystery of God’s abundance and excess; the gospel moves from our being in control to an invitation to surrender ourselves so that God provides in excess through us. On our own we will always lack; when we surrender ourselves to God and let God act in and through us, we will have all we need in abundance.

GRADUATION BLESSING
Dear Lord,
the life that you have given us has many stages.
Please bless these young people today,
as they leave one stage of life and begin another.
Guide them as they finish this chapter
in the story you have written for them,
and begin a new one, written on a fresh page.
Help them to make the right choices, Lord.
May they always remember
that past choices need not sully a bright future,
nor good choices in the past
ensure that tomorrow will be carefree and easy.
Most of all, remind them, Lord,
that no one's story is fully lived
unless you are allowed to be its one, true author
by those who live it.
Amen.

GOSPEL LIVING: July Focus: Discipleship
We are called to be disciples; but, what does that really mean? What is a disciple suppose to do? Our “job” is to spread the Good News - the message of the Love of God. That seems straight forward enough until you consider how to do it. Not everyone can become a missionary or a great preacher. Most of us have all we can do to support and care for our own families. Who has the time or the skills to really be a disciple? We need missionaries and preachers to spread the Good News; but, that is not the only way to be a disciple. How we live our ordinary, daily life gives witness to the message. How we care for our family, how we treat the stranger, and how we help the poor “speaks” the message to those we encounter. We are not perfect and we are constantly growing in our understand of how to truly love others as God loves us. The more we can allow God’s love to direct our actions, the more we give witness and spread the Good News. We need the support of others who are committed to this mission. We need to encourage each other, to help us see areas we need to grow in, and to keep us focused on our mission. While we get some support through Sunday Mass, we need more than that. We need to discuss our faith and struggles with others; whether it is a formal group (like a Bible Study group) or individual friends we can talk to about such things. We need to keep growing in our knowledge of our faith. An annual retreat is great; but, not practical for most people. However, we all have access to books and the Bible. Take time to read things that will help you grow in your faith and deepen your understanding of discipleship. Ask others to suggest books/resources they have found helpful. Read a little daily-small bites-and ask the Holy Spirit to help you see what these readings may mean for your life and discipleship.
