SUNDAY MASS June 7&14, 2009
![]() |
God,
we praise you:
Father all-powerful,
Christ Lord and Savior, Spirit of love.
You reveal yourself in the depths of our being,
drawing us to share in your life and your love.
One God, three Persons,
be near to the people formed in your image,
close to the world your love brings to life.
We ask this, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
one God, true and living, for ever and ever.
Amen
IN SYMPATHY
Please remember in your prayers, James VanBlaricom who passed away this past week. May we remember those families and friends who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they enjoy the fullness of God’s love.
BACCALAUREATE MASS

THANK YOU FROM SPAGHETTI DINNER COMMITTEE
We would like to thank all the parishioners who came together and helped organize, set up, cook, serve, cleaned up as well as ate at our recent parish Spaghetti Dinner. We served about 200 people, and sold what was left over
on Sunday. Special thanks goes to the Italian members of our parish who prepared the spaghetti and sauce. We netted $1104 for our parish Unemployment Crisis Fund. We sensed that the people involved enjoyed themselves and we plan to have another Spaghetti Dinner next spring.
COME JOIN THE FUN
Join fellow parishioners in the great outdoors July 24-26. Few sites remain for the annual St. Patrick’s campout. Swimming, fishing, hiking, fellowship and more are yours to claim at Waterloo Park when you reserve a full hookup or tent site for your family. Reflecting the Gospel

As a human like us, Jesus experienced the same challenges and frustrations with relationships as we do. The eleven disciples who met Jesus in Galilee had been with him from the beginning; they had seen his miracles, heard this teaching, witnessed his healing, saw him die, and now see him alive, the risen one. Yet, “they doubted” Beyond doubt, the disciples had denied him, betrayed him, resisted him. It would seem that this would put a strain on any relationship! Instead of giving up on the disciples, Jesus commands them to carry forth his mission. These disciples who strain relationships are trusted to carry forth Jesus’ very ministry! Jesus’ faithfulness to and trust in his followers lets us glimpse something of the mystery and wonder of who God is, which cannot be separated from God as the One who desires to be in relationship with God’s people at all costs. The readings show us a God who always acts on our behalf, strengthening the intimate bond of love and relationship between God and us. On this Sunday honoring the Trinity, the first reading describes what our Creator-God did for the Israelites: made them heirs of the land and of a long life. This reading says something about who God is, but does so in terms of God as the doer of mighty deeds: God creates, elects a nation to be God’s own people, enjoins the people to keep the “statutes and commandments” which God gives, desires life and prosperity for the chosen people. This passage from Deuteronomy suggests all that God does is really an extension of who God is. The second reading describes what God does for us in Christ. The depth and intimacy of God’s relationship with us goes to our own identity-“we are children of God” and “heirs of God and join heirs with Christ.” As children and heirs, we share in the identity of Christ and, therefore, of God. Moreover, we participate in God’s saving work because we share in the power and mission of Christ through the Spirit. Sharing in divine identity is to share in divine doing-we, too, are to do might deeds. To be formed into the identity of Christ, therefore, is to be formed into his mission. The gospel rather succinctly and clearly lays out the mission with which Jesus charged the disciples before he ascended into heaven: make disciples, baptize in the name of the Trinity, teach, and observe “all that Jesus has commanded.” Jesus can entrust this mission to us because we share in his identity through the power of the Spirit. Has anything more wondrous or greater happened before?

JUNE FOCUS:
Joy
In Greek the word “joy” is chara, derived from the word charis, which is the Greek word for “grace.” In English, we tend to see the words “joy” and “happiness” as referring to the same thing. An emotional sense of well-being and pleasure. The Greek origins of this word are important to understanding what “joy” is really about. It is not tied to a happiness that comes and goes in reaction to events that affect us. “Joy” is rooted in “grace” which comes from God. It is a Spirit-given expression that flourishes best in hard times. It is difficult to explain; but, to those who have experienced true joy there is no doubt that it has nothing to do with happiness. Often, it is most noticeable when there is no external reason for this sense of joy. It is the grace of the Spirit working within us-strengthening us in the midst of stress and difficulties. It allows us to hold on to our hope and trust in God and find our way through the mine field of troubles we are facing. This joy is a peaceful, pervading sense that tells us God is with us. This is a virtue we cannot “practice” in the sense that one can practice patience or temperance. It is a gift. However, we can become more open to receiving this gift by learning how to listen and follow the prompting’s of the Holy Spirit. The more we are in tune with God’s will and make our choices based on what we believe is right and good; the more open we become to receiving joy. The early Christians learned very quickly that following the gospel brought them trouble and afflictions. They also found that in living the gospel, they experience a deep joy that made these troubles seem insignificant. The joy of the Holy Spirit helps us see the abundance of God’s blessings upon us. If you want to experience this joy, follow the gospel, recall God’s blessings in your life, and ask the Holy Spirit to give you this grace.

GRADUATION BLESSING
Dear Lord,
the life that you have given us has many stages.
Please bless these young people today,
as they leave one stage of life and begin another.
Guide them as they finish this chapter
in the story you have written for them,
and begin a new one, written on a fresh page.
Help them to make the right choices, Lord.
May they always remember
that past choices need not sully a bright future,
nor good choices in the past
ensure that tomorrow will be carefree and easy.
Most of all, remind them, Lord, that no one’s story is fully lived
unless you are allowed to be its one, true author
by those who live it.
Amen
