God of all compassion, Father of all goodness, to heal the wounds our sins and selfishness bring upon us you bid us turn to fasting, prayer, and sharing with our brothers. We acknowledge our sinfulness, our guilt is ever before us: when our weakness causes discouragement, let your compassion fill us with hope and lead us through a Lent of repentance to the beauty of Easter joy. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen |

LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE
The Lenten Penance Service is scheduled for next Wednesday, March 10 at 7:30pm. In this sacrament we are given the opportunity to heal the division in our souls which comes about when we are separated from God by sin; to heal the division in our relationships with one another which comes about when we are separated from one another by sin and heal the divisions in our communities which comes about when we are at odds with one another because of sin. As we approach Easter, let us come prepared with clean hearts and souls. Join us for the Lenten Penance Service Wednesday, March 10, 2010.
SECOND COLLECTION: Catholic Relief Services
Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection. This collection helps to fund six Catholic organizations that improve the quality of life and protect human dignity. Your gift will support agricultural development to strengthen economies and create food sustainability, provide outreach services to survivors of human trafficking, and supply pastoral care and advocacy for immigrants and refugees. By helping the marginalized and impoverished, you give hope to Jesus in disguise. Please be charitable in next week’s collection by using the attached envelope.

The first part of this Sunday’s gospel leaves a lot of room for us to fill in the blanks! We don’t know anything about the two tragic events reported in the gospel. Jesus doesn’t reply to the people by filling in more information; rather, he uses these probably fairly recent events that are very much on the minds of people as a “teachable moment.”
These events involve tragic death, and Jesus uses these tragedies to make absolute that unless we repent, we also will die. Then in the parable of the fig tree, Jesus reveals the patience of God with us, despite our slowness to repent. How merciful is our God! This is God’s work of mercy: to take what is almost dead and coax it to new life. This is our work of repentance: to turn from sinfulness toward God’s transforming mercy.
Jesus redirects the people from idle speculation about the meaning of the tragic fate of others to the serious work of their own repentance. As the second reading reminds us, “standing secure” in the graciousness of the new life God offers us does not mean that, because God gives us everything needed for our journey toward salvation, we don’t need to cooperate with God to “cultivate” and “fertilize” our spiritual lives. We “grumble” our way through life-we judge others, fail to live up to our baptismal commitments, do not heed all the warnings given us. Jesus is quite clear in his message: “bear fruit” or be “cut. . .down.” Our encouragement is that God is ever patient, ever merciful. God never gives up on us.

ST. PATRICK PARISH CAMPOUT
St. Patrick has reserved 15 sites at Fort Stevens State Park, near Astoria, from July 22nd through July 25th. Six families have registered and we would love to fill all 15 sites. With so many things to offer at Ft. Stevens (fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, and the beach) for the entire family, last years camping group decided to extend the camp out to 4 days (Thursday through Sunday). All sites are electric, with a maximum of 8 people per site. Most of the sites selected are very good for tent or RV camping and can accommodate multiple families per site if needed.
This year, we will be using club camping, which requires a minimum of 10 sites. Thanks to a generous donation from the Knight of Columbus, the camping fees for the 2010 parish camp out will be very affordable. The site fees will be based on the number of families that sign up, with a maximum site fee of $58 per family. If more than 15 families sign up, the site fees will decrease accordingly and money refunded. The cost of food per family will be determined later (in the past, the cost has been $10 per adult and $5 per child for a two day stay).
To make this a great camp out, we would love to have someone that plays the guitar. July is not very far and we need your commitment as soon as possible to allow us to plan and organize this event. We will have a planning meeting in April. We would like to have a minimum of ½ of the site fees ($29) now to reserve your spot. For more information see the display on the board in the parish center. To reserve your spot please contact Duane and Chris Kloser at 503-266-4489 or by E-mail at laker1fan97013@yahoo.com.

No sofas or mattresses will be accepted. We will be glad to write you a receipt for your donations. Please use discretion in your donations. Please contact Duane Kloser at 503-266-4489 or E-mail me at laker1fan97013@yahoo.com for more information.
