Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS March 1, 2009

lent season

Father,
through our observance of Lent,
help us to understand the meaning
of your Son’s death and resurrection,
and teach us to reflect it in our lives.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

IN SYMPATHY
Please remember in your prayers Bill Dietz the husband of Irene Dietz who passed away this week. May we remember those who have gone before us in our hearts and prayers.

CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
On behalf of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, thank you! Because of your generous gifts, the Church will be able to build, fix, and maintain structures, educate clergy and seminarians, assist children in orphanages, publish Catholic newspapers, provide scholarships, and so much more. Your gifts will allow the Church in Central and Eastern Europe to continue to flourish and to strengthen and share its belief in the power of the Spirit of Love. Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections to see how your gifts are making a difference.

EMBER DAY
Wednesday, March 11 is an Archdiocesan Ember Day. Traditionally, Ember Days are days of prayer and fasting. The intention of this Ember Day is for the healing of victims of child sexual abuse and their reconciliation with the Church. To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed. Observance of the Ember Day is encouraged but no obligatory.

FRIDAY NIGHT SOUP SUPPERS AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS
This Friday, March 6 at 6:00pm, the Sunday morning Religious Education Catechists will prepare and serve a soup supper in the Parish Center followed by the St. Patrick Men’s Club presenting the Stations of the Cross in the Church. Please come and join us during this lenten time of reflection.

Reflecting the Gospel

Jesus temptation

There are certain times in all of our lives when we need to go off and be alone to confront the pain of loss and perhaps even a life that must be rearranged. People serious about their spiritual life take retreat time to examine their spiritual growth. Someone contemplating a job change might spend hours alone searching out possibilities on the Internet. Although we human beings are naturally social creatures, there are times and circumstances that dictate we be alone. Jesus in this gospel went out “into the desert” alone. He is on the brink of inaugurating his public ministry. Something new and important is about to happen. He does the natural thing: going off alone to think things through and confront the demons that would dissuade him from his mission. The structure of this Sunday’s gospel highlights two distinct but interrelated movements of the Christian life: Jesus goes “into the desert” to confront Satan; then he goes into Galilee to begin his mission to “proclaim the gospel.” We enter our own Lenten desert-spend more time by ourselves-to confront our temptations and turn ourselves more perfectly toward God and each other so we can emerge as an Easter people ready to proclaim the Gospel. Lent is an intensification of what our day -to-day Christian living is all about: conversion and proclamation. Confronting temptation and the sinfulness that keeps us from righteous Christian living is a necessary first step in the ongoing process of conversion. We must turn from sinfulness before we can assume to continue Jesus’ mission. Since repentance, forgiveness, and belief are so central to Christian living, proclaiming the Gospel at least means that we turn from our sinful ways, forgive others and express our belief by saying yes to God’s will for us. None of these is easy to do, which is why proclaiming the Gospel is a lifelong mission. Proclaiming the Gospel doesn’t mean we all have to go out on street corners and be Bible thumpers. More eloquent proclamation than words (even sacred words!) Is the life we live. Thus conversion and proclamation are vigorously related: turning from sinfulness toward God enables us to proclaim by the goodness of our lives the Gospel of repentance and forgiveness.

We offer all our newly Elect our prayers, our encouragement and our support.

A BIG THANK YOU
A big thank you goes to Nancy Patton and Nancy Riener for designing and creating our new community news bulletin board in the parish center. If you haven't seen it yet, take some time during coffee and donuts to see what they've done and check what might be of interest to you. Our new community bulletin board is just the place to post items for sale, help wanted, jobs needed, and news and information of interest to your parish community. Thanks Nancy and Nancy for making it happen!

THANK YOU!
There are not enough words to express our love and appreciation to all the wonderful parishioners of St. Patrick Church on the death of our wonderful son and brother, Russell Schoen. Your prayers, cards, flowers and hugs have been a constant strength to us all during this very difficult time. May you always know that we will continue to keep you all in our hearts and prayers.
The Schoen and Newbury families.

THE LENTEN REFLECTION

Dear God,
throughout the history of your people,
from the prophets Moses and Elijah,
through to the life of your only Son Jesus,
you called people into the desert as a means of purifying their souls
and to prepare them for great works.
Today, though not called to the same works
we are called into the desert of self-denial.
In place of sand, heat and hunger,
we deny ourselves luxuries, desires and habits.
While we are called no less to holiness than the saints,
may our Lenten sacrifices, done for love of you,
bring us closer to you this season
and purify our souls.
Amen.
