Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS March 15, 2009

lent season

Father,
you have taught us to overcome our sins
by prayer, fasting and works of mercy.
When we are discouraged by our weakness,
give us confidence in your love.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

IN SYMPATHY
Please remember in your prayers Dave Merrill, the husband of Alice Jane Merrill who passed away this past week. The funeral for Dave will be Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 11:00am.

MONTHLY MASS AT HOPE VILLAGE
Wednesday, March 18 is the monthly Mass at Hope Village. You are invited to join in celebrating Mass with those members of our parish community who are unable to join us at our regular Sunday liturgies. The Mass is held in the Library of the Assisted Living section of Hope Village. Mass time is 10:30am. Visitors are asked to park on the side and back parking lots, please.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND - MARCH 21/22 THE CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION
In Oromia, Ethiopia, drought has destroyed entire regions of crops, devastating the local agriculture industry and economy. In places like Oromia, where sustainability is based entirely on agriculture, food security is alarmingly low. At a local Catholic church in the Oromia region, hundreds of children are receiving therapeutic milk and medical treatment from Catholic Relief Services (CRS). In addition to funding the important international relief work of CRS, The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports legal and resettlement services for refugees, advocacy, and disaster/emergency relief. Please be generous in next week’s collection by using the attached envelope.

LENTEN FRIDAY NIGHT SOUP SUPPERS AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS
This Friday, March 20 at 6:00pm, the Hispanic Catechists will prepare and serve a soup supper in the Parish Center followed by the Monday night Prayer Group presenting the Stations of the Cross in the Church.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN SERVING OUR LORD THROUGH THE MINISTRY OF MUSIC?
You are invited to share your talents by joining the Adult Choir, open to parishioners high school age and above, in preparation for the liturgies of the Triduum and Easter. Rehearsals take place on Saturday mornings in the church, beginning at 9:30am.

Reflecting the Gospel

Cleaning up your heart and mind

Water isn’t just water anymore! Well water usually has minerals in it and tastes funny to city folk. City water from processing plants has chlorine and fluoride and other things added so that it tastes funny to country folk. The grocery store shelves are filled with bottled water claiming to be from pure mountain springs or just simply distilled, pure water. Whatever water slakes our thirst, we know that water is essential to support life. This Sunday’s gospel unfolds as a long conversation, first about water but then takes us into the depths of the mystery of everlasting life. The gospel is a revelation of Jesus as the Messiah, “truly the savior of the world.” This long gospel story begins with a simple, human scene: a thirsty traveler, a communal well, a woman come to draw water. But something significant happens: the scene shifts from Jesus’ thirst to that of the woman. The Samaritan woman thought she was thirsting for water; Jesus gradually reveals to her that she is thirsting for living water, a water only he can give because of who he truly is. Only during their extended conversation is Jesus’ identity gradually revealed: as a Jewish man, then a prophet, then Messiah. Finally, the townspeople come to recognize Jesus as the “savior of the world.” The gospel is so long-metaphorically reminding us that it takes a long time (a lifetime) to understand who Jesus really is. The thirsty Israelites querulously asked “is the Lord in our midst or not?” There they were, led through the desert to the promised Land by God, and still they did not recognize and trust the divine Presence. Yet, this Samaritan woman does eventually recognize the divine Presence in Jesus because she was open and seeking (“thirsting”). Our life, too, unfolds in simple scenes fraught with this same immense potential to come to recognize who Jesus is; we need only enter the conversation. Jesus is the “gift of God” who gives us the “living water” of his own preaching, dying, and rising. All we need do is drink deeply and we, too, will never thirst again, will live forever. Our hope in Jesus’ identity as the Savior of the world brings us to share in the salvation and everlasting life Jesus brings.

PRAYER FOR THE SCRUTINIES
Dear Jesus,
look upon these men and women
who come today, prepared to join our family.
In their journey to you, Lord,
give them the grace to examine their consciences and to acknowledge, as we all must,
those areas of our lives which need conversion.
Remind them and us
not only of the wrongs we have done,
but the good we still need to do.
May they remember always
that though their journey to the family of the Church
will soon be over,
it is but a one great step
on their continuing journey to heaven.
Amen

SUNDAY READINGS AND THE RCIA
For parishes who are celebrating the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults the Church allows the option of substituting the annual Cycle of readings (currently we are in Cycle B-readings from the Gospel of Mark) for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent with the readings from Cycle A-readings from the Gospel of Matthew. The Cycle A readings are the dramatic stories of Conversion- the Samaritan Woman at the Well; Healing - The Man Born Blind; and Resurrection to New Life - the Raising of Lazarus. The prayers of the three Scrutinies correspond to these readings and springs from them. Here at St. Patrick we will be using the Cycle A readings for the next three Sundays.

SCRUTINIES
This Sunday marks the beginning of the Three Scrutinies, the Rites of the Church which immediately precede the celebration of the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults at the Easter Vigil. The men and women who have been gathering, on a weekly basis, since this past September to learn about Jesus and the Catholic Church, will come before the community of believers to publicly acknowledge their sinfulness, to testify to their need for Jesus in their lives, and to receive the solemn promise of the Church that he, through his Son, Jesus, has called them and will protect them on this grand journey of the heart.
Today we celebrate the First Scrutiny. Linked to Matthew’s Gospel account of the Samaritan Woman at the Well, the Gospel and the Scrutiny are both about conversion. The turning away from a life without Jesus, toward a life that will forever be most intimately united with Jesus. Like the Samaritan Woman, the Elect and Candidates are asked to acknowledge their sinfulness, humbly, before God, that he, in turn, would now offer them the Water of Life which springs up within each heart that opens itself up to the indwelling presence of God.
The Scrutinies are not just for the Elect and the Candidates however. They are, if we allow them to be, for each and every person who claims discipleship with Jesus. For we are all on the Grand Journey of Faith. Each encounter with the Sacraments, whether as an observer at a Baptism or Wedding, a penitent in Reconciliation, the recipient of the Anointing of the Sick, or the reception of the Eucharist - that Grand Feast of Thanksgiving - is an opportunity to meet Christ in the truth of our sinfulness, the need for his mercy, compassion and welcome, and the newness of life unity with him brings us. So this Grand Journey of Faith is never something we sit on the side of the road and watch go past us, rather it is Our Grand Journey in which we have welcomed and made room for others to join in along the Way.
So let us with “full, conscious, and active participation,” welcome our Members of the Elect and Candidates for Full Communion with the Catholic Church into the procession, the Grand Journey, which leads us all to the face of the living and loving God.
Our prayers are with: Javier Baltazar & Sponsor Sarah Judge, Krystalyn Salyer & Sponsor Kelly Hochett, Alicia Thomas & Sponsor Gina Thomas, and Betsy Thomas & Sponsor Bob Thomas, our Members of the Elect. And Heather Gambles & Sponsor Myrtle Johnson, Barbara Madsen & Sponsor JoEllen Rief, Dick Madsen & Sponsor Thelma Kriegshauser, and Sherman Rogers & Sponsor Yvonne Rogers, our Candidates for Full Communion.
