IN SYMPATHY
Please remember in your prayers Mildred Madsen, the step mother of Dick Madsen and Abe Saykally a member of our parish who passed away. May we remember those families and friends who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they enjoy the fullness of God’s love.

SECOND COLLECTION:
CATHOLIC HOME MISSION APPEAL

Right here in the United States, some dioceses are unable to provide fundamental pastoral care for their faithful. These “home mission” dioceses cannot support an adequate number of priests. They cannot afford funding for youth ministry programs or religious education. This week we take up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Help strengthen the Church at home with a generous donation.

AN UPDATE ON FR. JOHN
Many have inquired about Fr. John. Please rest assured that Fr. John is doing well and is continuing to rest and revitalize during his absence. Currently Fr. John is anticipating that he will be returning sometime toward the end of June. In the meantime, please keep your cards and letters coming. He has been delighted to hear from so many of you and your care and enthusiasm for his good health are a blessing

Ascension Jesus Christ May 16, 2010

It’s fairly easy and sometimes rather convenient to make a sharp distinction between the material world and “spirit” world in such terms as these: one is real, the other isn’t; one is sensible, the other isn’t. Most of us, however, have a great deal of experience with the spirit world and believe firmly in it. A new idea pops into our head that is just the right way to solve a problem. We catch school spirit at pep rallies. We talk about high-spirited adventures or being in low spirits. While none of this experience of the spirit world is tangible, we still act upon it as being very real. Not everything important to us is tangible and sensible. In fact, sometimes what is most real to us is spirit. Spirit is what can most motivate us, inspire us, bring us to insight and creative responses to situations that would otherwise perplex or even overwhelm us. We might well imagine the disciples’ perplexity and overwhelming sense of absence when Jesus ascended into heaven. The first reading account from Acts mentions that “as he was going” the disciples were “standing there looking at the sky.” Maybe they wanted a last glimpse of Jesus. Maybe they were wishing that he wouldn’t leave them. Maybe they were still trying to catch a last minute something of his spirit so they wouldn’t feel his absence so keenly. As time will tell, Jesus’ disappearance from sight does not mark an absence but marks a new kind of presence. In the “absence” left by his ascension, we his followers are commissioned to “preach in his name to all nations.” What is it we preach? That suffering and even death lead to new life and that forgiveness will be granted to all who repent. His very ascension into heaven is our commissioning on earth because, “clothed with power from in high,” we are now the visible presence of Jesus. Think of that: his ascension itself is a commissioning. His absence brings a presence. The very absence sends us forth to be and do as Jesus. We can’t set out to take up Jesus’ mission to preach the Good News until we receive the Holy Spirit. This ensures us that our work isn’t ours but Christ’s. Our mission is to preach not simply events but a Person-Jesus Christ, the risen One.

*That Christian laity who witness the Good News of Jesus in secular society may know the support of those who follow a religious lifestyle in community, we pray to the Lord.

God our Father,
make us joyful in the ascension
of your Son Jesus Christ.
May we follow him into the new creation,
for his ascension is our glory and our hope.
We ask this through our

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
We are all familiar with the Catholic doctrine that the Holy Scriptures are the inspired word of God. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, each of us is an inspired word of God when we are faithful to Jesus. This means, as the gospel suggests, that we are to preach and live as Jesus commanded. Repentance and forgiveness require that we first are willing to do as Jesus did-give ourselves over to the Spirit of God who heals and gives life. Having first experienced God’s saving action, we can be that saving action for others.
