Reflecting the Gospel

  Jesus near with us

When we near the end of another liturgical year, we always hear gospels about the end times that call for us to look far into the future. These gospels inevitably paint a dark and dismal picture of calamity and doom, and so we often dismiss them. The apocalyptic imagery of this Sunday’s gospel is no exception. We are tempted to ask, “When, Lord?” Jesus’ answer, “no one knows,” ought to bring us to pay more attention to the present. Now is an opportune time for the in-breaking of Christ. Now is what counts. Apocalyptic language is always uttered by people undergoing difficult times (at the time of the writing of Mark’s gospel, the Temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed and the Jewish people saw themselves once again challenged as a nation). The word “apocalyptic” comes from the Greek, meaning to “uncover” or “reveal,” What is revealed in the apocalyptic passages of the gospels is the hope and promise of Christ’s abiding presence now and not just in terms of a future promise. The words of Jesus in this gospel communicate hope: when our world is falling apart, he is breaking in and will “gather his elect” to share in his “great power and glory.” We think of Jesus’ second coming as a future event. In fact, the darkening of the sun and moon and stars is already happening in the trials and tribulations that not only beset the first disciples, but also are part of our own lives. Jesus promises that all these things will happen. He further promises that he is “near, at the gates.” This gospel is about the ultimate victory over darkness that belongs to those who are faithful. That victory is now. What ought to startle us into sober reality is that we know the end will come. Like the gospel, Daniels’ vision describes in the first reading “a time unsurpassed in distress.” Also like the gospel, his vision reveals the victory of those “written in the book”: they “shall shine brightly. . .forever” and thereby give hope to people of their own time. We have all the means at hand to face darkness
and evil with confidence, sure that one day we “shall live forever.” The future holds no fear for us; rather than fear, we anticipate our future with joyful expectation, because the one we await is within and among us now.

Your support enabled us to sort in excess of 15000lbs.of food. On behalf of all the families whose meals will be better this fall. Thank you for the love you show.

Each month we shall select a film which sheds a bit of light on the richness of God’s creation and the challenge of the gospel. November movie will be: Babette’s Feast. November 12 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm and the cost is $15 per person. To register, call 503-794-8542 or email info@francisspctr.com. For more information, visit www.francisspctr.com.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Just as big calamities are not what the future is really about, neither are big deeds what our present is about. Our present is about doing the little things well, and we know how we “lead the many to justice” (first reading): by listening to Jesus’ words. Jesus has already given us all we need to have our names “written in the book.” We just need to live like he did, with compassion and understanding, wisdom and care, love and hope.

WHAT HAPPENING

  nov fall pic

HELP OUR TROOPS THIS CHRISTMAS
The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring small care packages to be sent to our parish members serving in the armed forces. Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, deodorant, chap-stick, etc.) would be gladly accepted and a Christmas card or two that we can slip into the boxes so each member can get a card from our parish showing support and merry Christmas. Try to make the cards as general as possible, for we will put a handful into each box. A collection box will be set up after the masses and your help will be needed to get all the address as well. If your family member is serving, please call Mike Schmader (503-266-1331) with his/her current address or drop it off at the parish office. We plan to mail off boxes around Dec. 1st. Lets let those who are serving know that we at St. Patrick are thinking of them and pray for their safe return.

BABY BOTTLES FOR PREGNANCY CARE CENTER
If you took home a plastic baby bottle in October to collect money to support the Canby Pregnancy Care Center, we ask that you return it, filled or unfilled. We would like to complete the fundraising by Nov. 29. Place the bottle in the basket in the back of the church. Half the number of bottles taken have been returned. Thank you to those who have already contributed to this cause.

A MESSAGE TO THE CHILDREN OF ST. PATRICK PARISH
Children in kindergarten through middle school: your voices are needed for our Christmas Eve and Epiphany liturgies!!! Come join the Children’s Choir to prepare the beautiful music for these celebrations. There are only 4 rehearsals scheduled and you will love all the songs we’ll be learning. Rehearsals take place in the church after the 11:00am Mass-app. 12:20 to 1pm or shortly thereafter on the following dates: November 22, December 6, 13, 20. (There is no rehearsal scheduled on Thanksgiving weekend.)

The children’s choir will be singing for the Family Mass on Christmas Eve (5pm) as well as for the Feast of the Epiphany of Jan. 3 at the 11:00am Mass. It is really vital that we have some older children in additions to the younger ones, so that there will be good leaders. Parents, please encourage your middle school sons and daughters to join the choir and develop some excellent leadership skills. Also, please come to the first rehearsal with your children to register and/or update their information. ***If you play a musical instrument, you are welcome to attend as well; we could definitely use your talents.***. Thank you. For more information, please call Lora Heli 503-263-3840.

ADULT CHOIR FOR CHRISTMAS 2009
The Advent and Christmas seasons will soon be upon us and with them, an opportunity to sing some of the most beautiful music ever written. Please come join our Church Choir and add your voice in praise and prayer! Membership is open to all who enjoy singing, high school age students and older. The commitment is short term: only a half dozen rehearsals in preparation for singing an hour before and during Midnight Mass. In addition, we have the honor of singing at the Grotto’s “Festival of Lights” on Sunday, December 27 at 6:00pm. You will find yourself truly blessed by becoming part of our music ministry. Rehearsals take place in the church on Saturday morning from 9:30am to about 11:30am on the following days: November 7, 14, 21 and December 4, 12 & 19. For more information, please call Lora Heli at 503-263-3840.
