Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS November 22, 2009

  Jesus King of Kings

Dear Lord,
on this Thanksgiving Day,
please bring us not only good food and memories
but help us remember that it is you we are thanking.
When we enjoy our meal with our relatives,
may we thank you, who brings all food from the earth.
When we enjoy the company of relatives and friends,
may we thank you, the source of all life and happiness.
And when we pray our prayer of blessing,
may our hearts be on you,
who is the source of all holiness, joy,
and every blessing that is showered on us.
Amen

Reflecting the Gospel

  november 22 St. Patrick

Since most of us have never lived in a kingdom and have no experience of relating to a king, our notion of kings and kingdoms tends to be along the lines of Camelot filled with handsome men, fair damsels, great wealth, easy comfort, eye-popping love, pristine peace. It’s a grand dream for a kingdom of this world. This festival and the readings, however, hardly take us to this kind of kingdom. The gospel is part of the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate at Jesus’ trial. This is not exactly Camelot! On this last Sunday of the liturgical year we clearly see that Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world. Christ’s kingdom is not a special place, but an interior identity defined by our relationship to Christ the King. And here is where we can have a little bit of Camelot. This Sunday we celebrate a King whose presence and power we have already experienced: Christ, whose kingdom is not territory but virtue, not power but service, not wealth but grace. This King has loved us with his very life. He has shown us Camelot. “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” Where is Jesus’ kingdom? It exists wherever people embody Jesus’ manner of acting and relating, where ever the Spirit of Jesus is the rule of life. We enter into Jesus’ kingdom whenever we listen to this voice and proclaim him “the Alpha and the Omega” of all this is. This kingdom does not belong to this world, but is meant to transform this world. The liturgical year culminates with a summary statement of the identity of Jesus-“Christ the King.” As Christ, he is worthy of our worship. As King he is deserving of our service. As we celebrate this enthronement of Christ in glory, we also look forward to his victory in us when we are “freed. . .from our sins” and “made. . .into a kingdom”. Thus this solemnity invites us to renew our commitment to serve him with all our hearts. It invites us to renew our self-giving stance as disciples who follow the King. In our self-giving are we transformed and as we are transformed so is the world because he has made us into a kingdom. The surprise of this festival is that we are God’s kingdom already. We already share in his victory for we are “freed from our sins.” At the end of this liturgical year we are invited by the liturgy once again to fall in love with our King who has won for us eternal life. “To him by glory and power forever and ever. Amen.

This dinner is open to everyone, especially families in need, lonely, homeless, elderly, poor, and anyone wishing to share a Thanksgiving meal with others. This dinner is provided so that all in our community, the young and the old, the rich and the poor, can have a place to celebrate Thanksgiving Day. LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Self-giving service is a small price to pay for our share in this eternal glory. Living the paschal mystery means that we don’t count the cost, but always find strength, hope, encouragement in the glimpse of final victory that we are repeatedly given throughout the liturgical year. Living the paschal mystery means that we see the victorious Christ even in the everyday trials and difficulties that we face. Living the paschal mystery means that we are ever faithful to the rhythm of dying and rising as it unfolds in our every day prayer, work, leisure. Living the paschal mystery means that we are “priests (that is mediators) for those whom we meet-that we are the Body of Christ leading others to holier lives and happier commitment. If someone should then ask us, “What have you done?” our answer would come quickly and surely-we have served our King. We have loved our King. In doing so, we have shared in the greatest wealth possible-his kingdom where is all glory.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Last week a letter was included in the bulletin with information regarding a replacement set of the Stations of the Cross. They are a hand carved, wooden set with natural stained finished. Each station measures a total of 21" x 15" with the figures measuring 12". The Demetz family of religious artisans in Italy, a centuries old family business are the craftsmen for this project. The cost for the 14 stations will be $23,000. As each station is individually hand carved it takes approximately 10 weeks from placement of order to completion of project and shipment. We would like to be able to have the new set of Stations of the Cross in time for the Lenten Season. In order to do so we would need to place our order no later than the first week of December. If you would like to make a donation to the Stations of the Cross you may do so by putting your donation in one of the envelopes found in the pews [or in the vestibule of the church ] this weekend marked “Stations” and putting it in the collection basket at Sunday Mass. HELP OUR TROOPS THIS CHRISTMAS
The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring small care packages to be sent to our parish members serving in the armed forces. Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, deodorant, chap-stick, etc.) would be gladly accepted and a Christmas card or two that we can slip into the boxes so each member can get a card from our parish showing support and merry Christmas. Try to make the cards as general as possible, for we will put a handful into each box. A collection box will be set up after the masses and your help will be needed to get all the address as well. If your family member is serving, please call Mike Schmader (503-266-1331) with his/her current address or drop it off at the parish office. We plan to mail off boxes around Dec. 1st. Lets let those who are serving know that we at St. Patrick are thinking of them and pray for their safe return.
