Weekly Bulletin
SUNDAY MASS November 23, 2008

Loving God,
let the gratitude
we know today
seep like a gentle rain
into the lives and hearts
of all people we meet
in your world and
at your table.
Amen.
THANKSGIVING DAY MASS
We will gather together on Thursday, November 27 at 9:30am for our Thanksgiving Day Mass. You are invited to bring your bread and drink for your thanksgiving table in order that it may be blessed at the Mass. The collection on Thanksgiving Day will be collected for our own St. Vincent dePaul Food Bank. Each Wednesday the St. Vincent dePaul Food Bank distributes food to the many in our community who have a difficult time putting food on their table. Especially during this holiday season let us remember those who are less fortunate by giving generously.

Reflecting the Gospel

A typical Wal-mart superstore has about 116,00 items. With everything from underwear to carrots and celery, our every daily need can be fulfilled and then some, a hundred times over. Many of us take such shopping opulence for granted; as we are choosing the right size or color of thumping the melons to make sure they are ripe, we hardly think about those who have no money to buy or those who live in places where the poverty is so great there is nothing even to purchase. Our own single actions-or even a lifetime accumulation of them-will probably not do much to relieve the poverty and great human and spiritual needs in the world. However, this gospel and solemnity remind us that each and every time we do good to another, we are doing good to Christ himself and hastening the final victory when all will be gathered in glory back to our Father in heaven. Each and every time we do good to another, it does make a difference in the world because it makes a difference in that individual. And in us.
This solemnity celebrates the victory and glory of Christ. The gospel gives a clear blueprint for how we ourselves might share in that glory: do good to the least among us. Christ’s judgment, “Come” or “Depart,” should be no surprise because we have, by our actions, said the same to the needy throughout our lives. Our conduct during this life is, in fact, our choice of the words we hear Jesus say to us at our final judgment. Our choices now are already our choice for eternity. Christ exercises his sovereignty in the right to judge. The basis for his judgment of us is whether we care for the least among us. What’s surprising about the judgment is that neither the good nor the wicked knew that what they were doing or not doing was for Christ. Christ is not a vindictive judge; we are judged only on our own choices and actions. The graciousness of Christ, the “Son of Man who comes in his glory,” is that this solemnity isn’t just about his victory and glory. By inviting us to share in this eschatological glory we are celebrating our own victory as well. Such is the Sovereign King we have!

Advent
It can be difficult to prepare our lives for Christ
amidst the busy preparations
of a material Christmas.
The four weeks before Christmas
are a time to prepare our families
to celebrate Christ's birth:
To prepare our minds to accept
that God's Son became a baby
and lived and died for us;
to prepare our hearts to accept
God's forgiveness, and to change our ways;
to prepare our souls to receive
God's healing grace through the celebration of Mass;
to take part in not only the work of preparation
but also the hope and joy in the midst of our work.

WHAT HAPPENING

THE ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE
“Lord our God, help us to prepare for the coming of
Christ your Son.
May he find us waiting eager in joyful prayer.”
These lines from the opening prayer for Mass for Monday of the First Week of Advent encourage us to look within and see what needs to be changed in order to be ready for the return of the Lord. One of the best ways to do this is through the Communal Penance Service. Through the celebration of the Word and a communal examination of conscience we are given the opportunity to offer our sin to God that he, in turn, might offer us clean hearts, truly ready for his return. Join us Wednesday evening, December 3rd at 7:30 pm for our annual Advent Penance Service.
NEW LIVING LITURGY, LECTOR’S WORKBOOKS AVAILABLE
The new 2009 Living Liturgy workbooks for lector’s are available in the sacristy of the church. Lector’s, please pick up your copy and check your name off on the list provided.

SPECIAL THANK YOU
Thank you to all our loyal ladies who participated in this years “October Tea.” Please know YOU are our purpose. A heartfelt Thank You to the ladies who made this event such a success. I always knew you were all so talented and able to step-in and make this “Tea”, such a great occasion. You have no idea how much I missed being with you this year. I always truly enjoy this special time just being women and companions for an afternoon.
Most sincerely, Edye Pavlicek, Chair-women
CHRISTMAS CHILDREN’S CHOIR
The seasons of Advent and Christmas are fast approaching. Children, would you like to use your musical gifts and talents to beautify our Christmas liturgies? We would love to have you join us! The Children's Choir, open to children from kindergarten through middle school, will have its first rehearsal in the church on Sunday, Nov. 30 following the 11:00 am Mass--app. 12:20 to 1 pm or shortly thereafter. (Yes, it is Thanksgiving weekend, but it is also the 1st Sunday of Advent and time to get started.) We will continue rehearsals on the next 3 Sundays: Dec. 7, 14 & 21. The Children’s Choir will be singing for the Family Mass on Christmas Eve (5 pm) as well as for the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 4 at the 11:00 am Mass. It is really vital that we have some older children in addition to the younger ones, so that there will be good leaders. Parents, please encourage your middle school sons and daughters to join the choir and develop some excellent leadership skills. Also, please come to the first rehearsal with your children to register and/or update their information. For more information, please call Lora Heli at 503-263-3840
thank you.
