Weekly Bulletin
SUNDAY MASS November 30, 2008

Father in heaven,
our hearts desire the warmth of your love
and our minds are searching for the light of your Word.
Increase our longing for Christ our Savior
and give us the strength to grow in love,
that the dawn of his coming
may find us rejoicing in his presence
and welcoming the light of his truth.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen
ADVENT WREATH MAKING
Don’t forget to join us Sunday, November 30 following the morning Masses by making your own family Advent Wreath. Volunteers from our RE classes will be available to help you in creating your own family Advent Wreath. Forms and greenery will be available in the parish center. Cost is $5.00 [new price] which covers the cost of the materials.
THE ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE
“Lord our God, help us to prepare for the coming of
Christ your Son.
May he find us waiting eager in joyful prayer.”
These lines from the opening prayer for Mass for Monday of the First Week of Advent encourage us to look within and see what needs to be changed in order to be ready for the return of the Lord. One of the best ways to do this is through the Communal Penance Service. Through the celebration of the Word and a communal examination of conscience we are given the opportunity to offer our sin to God that he, in turn, might offer us clean hearts, truly ready for his return. Join us Wednesday evening, December 3 at 7:30pm for our annual Advent Penance Service.
SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY - A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION
On Monday, December 8 our Mass schedule for the Immaculate Conception
will be the following:
8:00am Mass [English]
10:30am Mass at Hope Village Retirement Center
7:00pm Mass [Spanish]
NO ADULT SCRIPTURE CLASS NEXT WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3 DUE TO THE PENANCE SERVICE.
Reflecting the Gospel

Listen up! Pay attention! I’m talking to you! Hey, you! Urgent! Fragile! Do not bend! Virus alert! These and a hundred other pithy sayings are ways we call attention to what matters to us. We shouldn’t be surprised, then, to hear Jesus use two short imperatives at the beginning of this Sunday’s gospel: “Be watchful” Be alert!” Jesus is telling his audience and us that something important is happening. Yet how often we find ourselves not alert but sleepy. We are worn out, worn down-even the good we do sometimes seems worthless. The Advent season calls us to overcome our drowsiness by calling out to God for help and watching for the One who comes to renew us. This is how we begin Advent: we watch and wait by taking the time to pay attention to something important that is happening now and is yet to happen. We take time out of our busy-ness to be aware of the One for whom we watch and the One whose coming we await. Advent brings new energy for encountering Christ when we open ourselves to the many ways Christ is already present to us. We begin Advent not be looking to Christ’s first coming into our midst at the Incarnation, but by looking to Christ’s return at the end of time. Christ has come, fulfilled his mission, and then, like the “lord of the house” in the gospel, is “traveling abroad.” We, “his servants in charge,” have each been given out our own work to do until Christ returns. And what is our first and most important work? Watching for God’s coming! At the same time we must always remember that the watching is never in vain: our watching hastens encounters with the very One on whom we wait. Our watching is now and in it the past and future meet. Yes, during this wonderful time of the liturgical year we look to the past to remember Jesus’ becoming incarnate and dwelling among us and anticipate the future when Christ will come again. But we live now and in this present moment Christ is within us and among us. The first reading reminds us that our watching isn’t something passive; we must be “mindful of God in our ways.” Thus our watching is seeing God in our “doing right,” seeing God in the simple, everyday things we do. Our lives often seem to bog down with the endless “sameness” of things. We spend Advent in the time and place we live and we still find God anew because our encounters with Jesus always bring us new life. The work of Christian living is to constantly watch for the redeeming possibility of every moment.

Advent
It can be difficult to prepare our lives for Christ
amidst the busy preparations
of a material Christmas.
The four weeks before Christmas
are a time to prepare our families
to celebrate Christ's birth:
To prepare our minds to accept
that God's Son became a baby
and lived and died for us;
to prepare our hearts to accept
God's forgiveness, and to change our ways;
to prepare our souls to receive
God's healing grace through the celebration of Mass;
to take part in not only the work of preparation
but also the hope and joy in the midst of our work.

The Children’s Choir will be singing for the Family Mass on Christmas Eve (5 pm) as well as for the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 4 at the 11:00 am Mass.
