Reflecting the Gospel

  rainbow

2      In the gospel for this Sunday Jesus exposes the hardness of the Pharisee’s hearts. The context for this gospel is confrontation and the content is about divorce. But digging deeper into the text, we find that the reverberating message of the gospel is about hardness of hearts: “Because of the hardness of your hearts wrote you this commandment.” The Pharisees show “hardness of hearts” by putting the law of Moses ahead of the plan of God. Even the disciples show “hardness of hearts” in rebuking the children. The plan of God, as revealed in creation, is the blueprint for creation’s completion. “Hardness of. . .hearts” cuts us off from the blueprint. Jesus always challenges human traditions when they diverge from action hindering our entering fully the life and blessing God offers us.  The world in which the Creator blessed marriage is the world before sin.  The world in which Jesus and the Pharisees debate divorce is a world in which sin abounds, and so one must be directed by laws. One purpose of law is to delineate clear parameters for making right choices.  This is necessary in a world where sin and hard hearts cloud people’s judgement and sometimes lead them to make selfish choices rather than self-giving choices. The Pharisees ask about a point of the law and Jesus answers by pointing to God’s intention. This gospel presents the tension between God’s plan and sin, between the divine ideal and concessions to human weakness. Jesus champions the ideals of unity and goodness embedded in creation and of blessing and compassion offered to little ones.  In the deepest recess of hearts, we all desire to live in union with one another as God intends. The gospel intimates that the kingdom of God belongs to those who yield “hardness of. . .hearts” to the open embrace Jesus models. Just as the gospel moves from shortsighted confrontation over Mosaic laws of divorce to Jesus’ tender embrace of little children, so must our lives move from our own shortsightedness to the wide embrace of God’s ultimate plan-the blessing of union with one another.

TICKETS TO PORTLAND’S SINGING CHRISTMAS TREE
Celebrate Christmas. Celebrate Tradition. Are you interested in starting the Christmas season off right by attending by far the best Holiday Production in the northwest? Many of you know that Paul Crawford, a member of St. Patrick Church, has been singing with the group for many years. Paul and his wife Gail volunteer countless hours in helping with this production and we would love to support their efforts.  This years guest performers include Timothy Greenidge, Michael Allen Harrison, Georgene Rice, Aaron Meyer, and The Jefferson Dancers.
To attend as a group, we must have a minimum of 15 people (last year, we had 32). Knowing that people hate to drive at night, I thought it would be best to attend an afternoon performance. Therefore, I reserved 40 tickets for the 2:30pm performance on Saturday, December 5 (Rows O thru R - the same section as last year).  Based on purchasing 40 tickets, the price is $34.50 each. This includes the handling fee. These are excellent seats.

If you are interested, please call Duane Koser at 503-266-4489 or see me at coffee and donuts after the 8:30 Mass on 9/27, and 10/4.  Tickets will be purchased on Monday, October 5th.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

God’s design for all of creation is that it be harmonious and whole. Paradoxically, it’s the rhythm of the paschal mystery-between dying and rising-that keeps us harmonious and whole. Dying to self means that our own selfish interests are not put ahead of the good of another-which promotes harmony.  The new life that always comes from self-giving is a sign of wholeness. Always what stands in the way of harmony and wholeness is hardness of heart-our own or another’s. The challenge is in the example of Jesus: embrace and bless even the little ones.

mailto:info@francisspctr.com.EUCHARISTIC ADORATION TO START THIS THURSDAY, OCT. 8, 12-8PM
If Jesus were better known in the Blessed Sacrament, earth would be brighter and Heaven nearer. As parishioners, one of the best ways to know Him, next to Mass, is to weekly spend an hour of quiet prayer time before Him in the Blessed Sacrament on the altar.  This Eucharistic Adoration is open to all.  It intensifies our relationship with Jesus, our Savior, the healer, and helps parish unity and spirituality. In October we are restarting Adoration in our church every Thursday from 12noon to 8pm and we need scheduled volunteers, especially during the 7-8pm hour.  The more adorers the better, but we must have at least 2 people with the Blessed Sacrament at all times and we normally do this in one hour shifts. If you can’t take an hour shift regularly, you can sign up as a substitute also.  This weekend we will have sign up sheets in the back of the church. By phone, for sign up or information, call Adeline Dawson (503-266-3039) or Dave Bernklau (503-651-3708).  Thank you to all past, present and future volunteers.

WOMEN’S CLUB MEETING
October 5 - 7:00pm - Multipurpose room
We will be so honored to have Sara Judge as our guest. Sara will be giving us some great cooking idea’s and with her expert experience, this should be a great learning opportunity. We will be putting the final touches together for our October Tea which is scheduled for Saturday, October 17th from 2-4pm.  All this should be great fun.  For more information call Edye Pavlicek (Chairwoman) 503-266-5769 or Karen Sadoff (Co-Chair) 503-266-9416.

FALL BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
The Baptismal Preparation Classes for parents who wish to have their children baptized are Tuesday, October 20 and Tuesday, October 27 at 7pm.  This is a 2 session requirement.  Please contact Sara @ 503-266-9411 for more information.

VENDORS WANTED
Sign up now to be a vendor at our 4th annual Holiday Bazaar November 14 & 15. Tables are $20 each.  All items must be handmade. For an application please contact Angela Baker 503-407-7493.

“GET ON BOARD”
A new series of Bible study classes is about to begin.  Last year we studied The Acts of the Apostles. This year we will use the same excellent publisher, Catholic Scripture Study, to study The Gospel of John.  Classes will be at St. Patrick on Monday mornings  from 9am-11:45 starting October 5th and Thursday evenings from 7pm-8:30pm. The cost of materials will be $39.99.  Please contact Bill Martinusen at 503-266-4926 or Kathy Hostetler at 503-266-3584 for more information.

MONTHLYEUCHARISTIC ADORATION

You are invited to spend an hour or two in Eucharistic Adoration Sunday, October 4 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All are invited to come and spend a bit of quiet time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
