SUNDAY MASS October 5, 2008

Father,
your love for us
surpasses all our hopes and desires.
Forgive our failings,

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,

one God, forever and ever.
Amen

Reflecting the Gospel

As with last Sunday’s parable, once again the chief priests and elders came up with the right answer to Jesus’ question, but failed to see that their own answer condemned them! Jesus issues this judgment against them in no uncertain terms: “the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” We ourselves are subjected to the same judgment: either be faithful disciples or lose our place in the kingdom. Thus Jesus’ confrontation with the chief priests and elders raises for us both hope and consternation: hope in that the kingdom will endure because of God’s faithfulness and tenacity; consternation in that we, as the new tenants, now face the same judgment. God’s kingdom will be established and endure because of God’s care and fidelity. God is so committed to the right management and care of the vineyard that God even sends the Son. When the rebellious tenants kill the son, God still is not deterred; rather, God begins again by making the Son the cornerstone and bringing in new tenants. In the first reading God allows the vineyard to be destroyed because in spite of God’s good husbandry the vines yielded “wild grapes.” throughout salvation history God has been a good care giver to the Chosen People; God has given clear Law and sent prophets to keep Israel faithful to the covenant. Yet time and again Israel has been unfaithful; instead of yielding a produce of justice and righteousness, the vine Israel has yielded bloodshed and infidelity. In Matthew the vineyard is not destroyed because the new vineyard is nurtured by God’s own Son who abides in those who claim Jesus is Lord. New tenants are brought in so that the vine will produce good fruit. The initial tenants are thinking pretty fuzzily - if they kill the Son, they will inherit the kingdom. The irony in the story is that in killing the Son to take ownership of the vineyard themselves, they actually lose everything, even their own lives. For those new tenants who are faithful, they gain everything-the kingdom, eternal life.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
The good news of this gospel is that the kingdom will survive no matter how the “tenants” act because the cornerstone is Christ. This provides a metaphor for our own living. No matter in what shape the vineyard of our own lives is - whether we need pruning or we seem to be in a dry desert-if we keep our eyes on Christ as the cornerstone of our own lives we will be fruitful, enjoy being tenants in God’s kingdom, and not fear judgment. A message of judgment is often hard for us to hear. However, it is an essential aspect of the faithful proclamation of the Gospel and calls us to accountability for the way we live.
We need not fear judgement because, just as God cared for the vineyard in Isaiah, so God cares for the vineyard of our lives. We are nurtured by God’s word, fed at God’s table, helped by the commandment of love. All we need do is let God tend us and bring us to produce good fruit. All we need do is be faithful; God will take care of the rest.
WHAT HAPPENING

IT’S ABOUT TIME ..TO OPEN NEW WINDOWS & DOORS!
Have you opened a window in the church lately or a door? The old aluminum frames and single pane glass are no longer energy efficient. Our door frames gape and sag and can no longer be adjusted, letting in the heat in the Summer and the cold in the Winter. New energy efficient windows and doors will keep our church building cooler in the Summer, warmer in the winter, and give us a new, fresh, updated look as well. Just one of the many projects on tap for church renovations in our It’s About Time Campaign!
NURSERY
Nursery is now open at the 11am Mass for ages 18 months - 4 years old. If you would like to take advantage of this program, please register this Sunday in the nursery or call Angela at 503-263-6622 so we know there is interest.
