St. Patrick Mass October 10, 2010
Father in heaven,
the hand of your loving kindness
powerfully yet gently guides all the moments of our day.
Go before us in our pilgrimage of life,
anticipate our needs and prevent our falling.
Send your Spirit to unite us in faith,
that sharing in your service,
we may rejoice in your presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Gospel Reflection St. Patrick Canby October 10, 2010

We all experience at different times in our lives various kinds of alienation, for example, receiving the silent treatment from another, being shown a cold shoulder, holding an unpopular opinion. In all these cases, the alienation can be overcome; we can usually talk out misunderstandings and hurts. This Sunday’s gospel records an extreme kind of alienation that could not be overcome by talking things out. Ten lepers, from “a distance, “ cry out to Jesus for pity. How did the ten lepers, who cannot take part in the social and religious activities of the community, know Jesus well enough to address him by name? No doubt, word of Jesus’ healing miracles spread even to these outcasts. No doubt, they clutched a straw of hope that Jesus could heal them and erase their separation. Jesus did just this-and so much more for one of them.
One leper is very different from the other nine, although all are healed. He alone returned to Jesus to give thanks for being healed. But the gospel is telling us even more: the leper’s return revealed a depth of faith that Jesus acknowledged as a sign of salvation. This faith led him to turn from the command of Jesus, which would have fulfilled the ancient law concerning restoration of lepers to the community. Instead, the Samaritan leper returns to the source of his healing. Jesus is not only the One who healed him of his leprosy but, more important, he is the One who drew him to action the faith that assured him of the new life of restoration and salvation. Faith is discovering who Jesus is; salvation is the lifelong journey of returning to and encountering him.
Both the first reading and the gospel present a foreign leper who asks for healing, obeys what is commanded, experiences healing, and then worships God. The distinctive element is found in the gospel where encounter with Jesus leads to the declaration, “your faith has saved you.” Salvation is not freedom from disease but relationship with Christ.

Amen

BLESSED MOTHER’S GARDEN
Have you noticed the manicured flower bed and newly planted pansies in Our Blessed Lady’s garden (at the front side entry to the church)? A nicely cleaned and pleasant appearance. Our thanks to Shirley Tooley, daughter Debbie and Darren. Your angel wings are showing!

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
The leper was healed while “Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem.” This is what happens to us when by paschal mystery living we walk with Jesus to Jerusalem: on the way we are healed of our infirmities. We are healed each time we come to Eucharist to give praise and thanks to God, and in this act of worship we become more perfect members of the Body of Christ. We are healed each time we put others ahead of ourselves, and in these simple acts we strengthen our faith. We are healed each time we pause a few seconds to “give thanks to God” for the many blessings of each day because by giving thanks to God we acknowledge that God has acted in Christ. Gratitude is an expression of paschal mystery living because by giving thanks we acknowledge our own indebtedness-we are poor and everything we are and are becoming is because God has raised us up. God gives us so much salvation and asks so little of us in return. This is but another reminder that our relationship to God isn’t between equals-God’s gifts are lavish, far more than anything we could earn or accomplish in our own. This is why paschal mystery living makes such good sense. By living Jesus’ dying and rising in our own simple everyday tasks, we render God the greatest thanks and worship because our lives become like that of the divine. Our thanks is manifestation of God’s salvation.
