Reflecting the Gospel
![]() |
This Sunday’s gospel begins with apostles seeking glory, learning that there is more demand to being disciples than would appear, and finally facing that true glory is not found where we usually seek it. We receive true glory when we finally give up pursuing it and instead pursue Jesus and the demanding life he offers. Like all of us ordinary human beings, James and John seek glory for themselves when they ask Jesus for places at his right and left. Jesus surprises them-and us by responding that true glory comes only from a life lived and given for others. Sharing in Jesus’ glory demands drinking his cup of suffering, being baptized into his death, and becoming the slave of all. Who would think that glory comes out of self-giving, suffering, and dying? What a contradiction! This gospel does more than predict Jesus’ passion and the consequences of being Jesus’ disciples. It points to and challenges the basic human tendency to seek fleeting glory and makes clear that the only behavior that bring lasting glory-and eternal share in the glory of Jesus himself-is to embrace who a servant-disciple of Jesus truly is: one who “gives his life” for the sake of the other, just as Jesus gave his life. There is nothing in this life that can bring us lasting glory-the eternal life that has been prepared for us and in which we already share-except self-giving for the sake of others, a self-giving that conforms us more closely to Jesus’ own self-identity as the suffering servant. Thus a share in Jesus’ glory ultimately means that we faithfully live our baptism into Jesus’ death and thus identity with Jesus and his saving work. Jesus responds to the apostles’ request for a share in his glory by saying that discipleship isn’t about raw power. Discipleship is about servanthood, even when it entails suffering and giving one’s life. The apostles weren’t ready for this-they abandoned Jesus at his passion and death. Are we ready to follow?

GOSPEL LIVING
October focus:
Service
Most of the time we think of service in terms of doing a particular thing - visiting the sick, helping out in a soup kitchen, mowing a neighbor’s lawn, etc. The things that are done, while helpful and good, are not the essence of service in the Gospel sense. Service is a giving of ourselves-our time and love - to someone else. It is not a “thing” that can be taken back once it is given nor can the receiver return it to us. It is not some thing we can purchase nor can we pay someone to do it for us. It is not a particular thing we do; but, the spirit in which we do it. Service, in the Gospel sense, is a way of being and thinking. It is a generosity of spirit that impells us to think of others before ourselves. It is a love for others that seeks to ease pain and uplift others whenever there is an opportunity. It is an awareness of those around us and the willingness to treat them with love. This kind of service can take many forms, including traditional things that readily come to mind. It can be as simple as smiling at someone or saying a kind word that uplifts their spirit. It does not require setting aside chunks of time volunteering to help with some good cause or ministry (although those things can be part of it). It can be expressed though everyday things: letting the person with only a couple of items go ahead of you with your full basket in the check out line, letting someone else have that nice big piece of cake, giving up your seat on a crowded bus, and so on. It is putting others before ourselves. Opportunities are everywhere and we will see them if we developed this spirit of service. We become more concerned about the needs of others and less focused on ourselves. It is giving of ourselves without considering what we may get in return or deciding the “worthiness” of the recipient. Basically, it is sharing the love God has poured out on us with everyone we meet. What can you do to grow in this Gospel spirit of service?

mailto:info@francisspctr.com.CONFIRMATION NEWS
As our Religious Education programing has undergone some unexpected changes in the past year and a half the pastoral staff has been examining our program for preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation for youth. This year a new Coordinator for grades 6 through High School Youth Group and Confirmation Preparation has been hired. In order to provide the best possible preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation for the youth of our parish it has been decided that togther with Fr. John as Pastor, Frances Parker (Coordinator of Jr. High, Sr. High and Confirmation) will spend this year in Confirmation Team Development and planning. During this planning and development year we are requiring that youth who will be interested in the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation for the 2010-2011 programing year be registered and actively involved in Youth Group. This will provide the 1 year prior involvement necessary to be in compliance with the Archdiocesan Policies and Guidelines.
ARCHDIOCESAN CONFIRMATION POLICY
Confirmation preparation and reception is intended to take place during the freshman and sophomore years of high school with primary emphasis on the sophomore year. Youth should have the opportunity for preparation and reception of the sacrament by the end of their 16th year of age. (Archdiocesan Policy on Confirmation) A person who is to be confirmed should be prepared through suitable instruction, proper personal disposition, and the ability and willingness to renew baptismal promises. (Canon 889, par.2)
ST. PATRICK CONFIRMATION POLICY
In compliance with Archdiocesan policy and recommendations for the preparation and reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, St. Patrick requires that any candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation be actively involved in age appropriate Religious Education for a minimum of 1 year prior to beginning preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Additionally, it will be expected that each candidate will continue to be involved in Youth group and to regularly attend weekend Mass during the period of preparation for the Sacrament.
MEET YOUR FUTURE PRIESTS AT THE SEMINARY BENEFIT DINNER
We invite you to join the celebration of future priests by purchasing tickets for the 6th Annual Seminary Benefit Dinner to be held Sunday, November 1, 2009, 4:00pm-7:30pm at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland. Tickets are $250 each of which $200 is tax deductible. Your support helps maintain an exellent priestly formation program. Mount Angel Seminary is the largest seminary in the west and serves 97 dioceses with a Catholic population of over eleven million people.
LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Much of our doing for others is simply part of our everyday circumstances, for example, parents taking care of their children or a worker cooperating with others on a team job. Being the servant of all isn’t always something extra or big; most of the time it is simply doing our everyday tasks generously and with integrity while keeping in mind that others are the Body of Christ. If we can do these everyday tasks with loving care, then when something big comes along we won’t deny Jesus like the apostles, but will say “we can.” And mean it, knowing full well the demands that identity with Christ entails.
