Weekly Bulletin
SUNDAY MASS October 19, 2008

Lord our God,
Father of all,
you guard us under the shadow of your wings
and search into the depths of our hearts.
Remove the blindness that cannot know you
and relieve the fear that would hide us
from our sight.
We ask this through Christ our Lord..
Amen
ONE SUNDAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD
Today, World Mission Sunday, with Catholics of the world, we are called to offer, at this Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our generous financial support, through the Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of our Lord - to help the poor and suffering experience the healing love and peace of Jesus. Thank you for your generosity.
IN SYMPATHY
Please remember in your prayers Elizabeth Littau, the sister of Linda Shilling, Fred Sanchez and Maria Vasquez Raya who recently passed away. Please remember to keep all of our parishioners and loved ones who have passed away in our thoughts and prayers.
IT’S ABOUT TIME. . . FOR A PROGRESS REPORT!
What a great start to our Capital Campaign for Church Renovations. We currently have $232,400 pledged or 58% of our goal of $400,000. Of the total amount pledged we have received $197,475, or 49% of our goal. Our target is to have 80% , or $320,00, of the necessary funding in the bank by December 31st so we can comfortably start the bidding process in January of 2009. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has pledged and donated so far.
A NOTE FROM SUSAN GALLAGHER, CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CHAIRWOMAN.
By now most of you will have received a packet of information outlining the plans for renovations. As you read the materials you are asked to pray about what your level of commitment should be. The care and up-date of our church building is the responsibility of everyone who worships and celebrates faith here. If you have questions about the project you are encouraged to speak with Fr. John or any member of the Building Advisory Committee; Ron Hostetler, Dave Muck, Frances Parker, Pat Nibler, Jerry Giger, or Sara Creel. If you have questions regarding the Capital Campaign you are encouraged to speak with Fr. John or the Campaign Chair, Susan Gallagher. Susan may be reached at 503-263-6456. Your support, encouragement, input and generosity have been wonderful.
God be with you,
Susan Gallagher

Reflecting the Gospel

The context for this Sunday’s gospel is the escalating conflict between Jesus and the Jewish authorities, which leads to Jesus’ passion and death. The leading Jews are overtly plotting how they might “entrap Jesus in speech.” They begin their offensive rather sarcastically. Ironically, it is precisely in their sarcasm that they speak the greatest truth: instead of shying away from the confrontation or defusing it, Jesus is unwaveringly truthful; he addresses the conflict head on. He has clarity about what is central-God and the kingdom-and so he is able to give to God what belongs to God: his very self. Discipleship requires of us nothing less. Would that we have the clarity about our life and duties as Jesus portrays in the gospel! Yet, if we keep our focus on Jesus, this does bring a clarity to us. The Jewish authorities are no doubt quite aware of the Old Testament stance that there is only one God whom faithful Jews serve. God’s sovereignty is uncontested; all rulers govern because they are summoned by God to do so. To this one sovereign Lord do the Jewish people give glory and honor. There isn’t any room for anyone else. In contrast, the gospel recognizes other rulers and has a different perspective. There are different spheres of rule. God is sovereign but there are others who do rule rightly and so we can pay them their due. The gospel shows us that our loyalties aren’t either/or, but it clearly articulates that there are different spheres with appropriate behavior belonging to each. Again the Jewish authorities miscalculate Jesus’ clear perception of himself and his mission. Jesus’ answer put things into perspective. When God is truly the center of our lives, there is no problem with giving others their due. Conversely, giving others their due doesn’t necessarily compromise God as the center of our lives. Jesus shows that serving the one God is even better expressed when we know clearly the relationship between God and other authorities in our lives. Civil authority can even be used to further God’s work, as in the case of Cyrus the Persian who liberates the Jews from Babylonian captivity. But civil authority does not have an ultimate claim on people; our obligations are owed primarily to God and secondarily to Caesar.

GOSPEL LIVING
Justice
We like things to be fair and just but ideas of what that means may not be the same as God’s. Is it fair for some to pay more tax than others because they have more? Is it just to provide food stamps to those who do not make enough to provide for themselves. Are there things that people should be “entitled” to have regardless of who they are or their circumstances? Is it just to simply take care of people who don’t seem to be able to care for themselves? It may be easier to give them what they need rather than to work with them and teach them to become more self-sufficient; but is that justice? Think about the God Jesus talks about in the parables. These pictures often leave us scratching our heads. How can it be just to pay all the workers the same wage when they have not done the same amount of work? How can you welcome home the child who has done everything “wrong” and wasted his money? How can the one who has kept all the rules be less pleasing than the sinner? God’s justice has nothing to do with equity. Justice does not mean everyone receives the same amount. Fairness is a matter of need. Those who have little require more than those who have more than they need. Consider your own ideas of what is just and fair. How does it affect your attitude toward the people in your life? How does it affect your position on various legal and civil issues facing our society today? Would Jesus agree with your sense of justice? These are not easy questions and the answers are not simple. There are times when it is not justice that motivates us but revenge or jealousy. Pray that you may have the heart of Christ and see justice through his eyes rather than your own. You may find it easier to respond to others with compassion for their problems and you may also find that it is much easier to forgive those who offend you.
