A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP VLAZNY
“Dear Father Waldron,
My pastoral visit to St. Patrick’s Church in Canby on Sunday morning, October 11, was a very happy one indeed. You and your people did a wonderful job of renovating the church. Congratulations!
Thanks very much for inviting me to bless the church and celebrate the Eucharist with all of you. Everyone seems most appreciative of the good work that’s been done on the church and they shared their enthusiasm with me both after Mass and during the reception. They also love their pastor, which never hurts!
Please thank Sara as well for me. She did a great job of coordinating things both before and during the liturgy. I am indebted to all of you and I assure you of my prayerful support. God bless.”
Your brother in the Lord, John G. Vlazny

ALL SOULS MASS AND REMEMBRANCE
The Solemnity of All Souls is Monday, November 2. We will have a special Mass on November 2 at 7:00pm. During our regular Sunday liturgy we will be including in our prayers of the faithful, the names of all from our parish community who have died in this past year. Please join us in keeping all of our faithful departed in your prayers throughout the month of November.

During the month of November we will have a Book of the Dead in the sanctuary of our Church. Next to the Book you will find blank pages for you to take home and write in the names of your family and friends whom you would like to be remembered in our prayers. These pages will then be inserted into our Book of the Dead as a reminder of our prayer and love for all who have gone before us and await us now in the presence of Christ in heaven.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME will end next Sunday, November 1, 2009. Remember to turn your clocks back one hour.

Reflecting the Gospel

  oct2503

Billboards and print ads, media commercials and junk mail are all about enticing us to leap before we think. There is a whole psychology about advertising that is rooted in making us think we need or want something whether we do or not. Advertising is about a leap to buy. This Sunday’s gospel is about leaps, too. But these leaps are of a very different kind: they too involve needs and wants, but also they bring us to leap to action that has everlasting consequences: increase in faith and in steadfastly following Jesus. In the gospel the blind beggar Bartimaeus makes two leaps. First, he makes a leap of trust when he cries out to Jesus to “have pity on” him. Then, when Jesus stops and calls him, he “sprang up”-a leap of anticipation and hope. Bartimaeus persists in prayer, relies on Jesus’ pity, and comes when called. He receives his sight and is ultimately saved by his faith. We are saved by our own faith when we pursue Jesus, speak boldly to him of our needs, and say to him “I want to see” knowing full well that what we are really asking is to follow him unreservedly as disciples. Faith is the insight of action. It is a leap that brings salvation. This gospel gives us a blueprint for faith and salvation-both what they are and what they demand. The dynamic between Bartimaeus and Jesus is a perfect description of what faith is: Bartimaeus heard Jesus, cried out to him, persisted in his prayer, came to Jesus when he called, and then spoke boldly of his need. All these actions-hearing, crying out, coming, speaking-describe a relationship between Bartimaeus and Jesus that is borne out in concrete action. This blind man was able to take in what Jesus had tried so desperately on the road to Jerusalem to get through to his disciples-that faith has its costs, that one must leave all and follow. Once he was cured of his blindness and able to see, Bartimaeus accepted the demand of faith and followed Jesus. Bartimaeus is a model of Christian discipleship; he lets his faith lead him to Jesus and then follows him. The link between faith and following is an encounter with Jesus: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” We can speak of faith as the insight of action because faith brings us more eagerly and surely to make leaps of trust and hope concerning what is ultimately most important to us when our ordinary human tendency would counsel caution.

WHAT HAPPENING

  oct2501

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME will end next Sunday, November 1, 2009. Remember to turn your clocks back one hour.

THE BLESSING OF OUR BELOVED ANIMALS
On Sunday, October 4, 2009, our parish held our annual blessing of the animals. This was as it always is a joyful experience for those who brought their precious pets in gratitude. As we remember that day, we also realize that those faithful companions also will be gone one day. When this happens there is always pain that a real joy has been taken from us. This reality became very true this last week when our Pastoral Associate, Sara Creel, lost her faithful companion and beloved Basset Hound, Sylvia after 10 years. Please remember Sara in your prayers so that God’s comfort will embrace her during this difficult time for her. Thank you, Fr. John Waldron

SORTING PARTY
Due to the generosity of the parish and the community, the Food Bank has an abundance of donated food to distribute. Before we can handle all this food, it needs to be sorted. We would like to have your help at a sorting party on Saturday, November 7 from 1:00-4:00pm. Please come for what ever time you can.

CONFIRMATION NEWS
As our Religious Education programing has undergone some unexpected changes in the past year and a half the pastoral staff has been examining our program for preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation for youth. This year a new Coordinator for grades 6 through High School Youth Group and Confirmation Preparation has been hired. In order to provide the best possible preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation for the youth of our parish it has been decided that togther with Fr. John as Pastor, Frances Parker (Coordinator of Jr. High, Sr. High and Confirmation) will spend this year in Confirmation Team Development and planning. During this planning and development year we are requiring that youth who will be interested in the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation for the 2010-2011 programing year be registered and actively involved in Youth Group. This will provide the 1 year prior involvement necessary to be in compliance with the Archdiocesan Policies and Guidelines.

ARCHDIOCESAN CONFIRMATION POLICY
Confirmation preparation and reception is intended to take place during the freshman and sophomore years of high school with primary emphasis on the sophomore year. Youth should have the opportunity for preparation and reception of the sacrament by the end of their 16th year of age. (Archdiocesan Policy on Confirmation) A person who is to be confirmed should be prepared through suitable instruction, proper personal disposition, and the ability and willingness to renew baptismal promises. (Canon 889, par.2)

ST. PATRICK CONFIRMATION POLICY
In compliance with Archdiocesan policy and recommendations for the preparation and reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, St. Patrick requires that any candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation be actively involved in age appropriate Religious Education for a minimum of 1 year prior to beginning preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Additionally, it will be expected that each candidate will continue to be involved in Youth group and to regularly attend weekend Mass during the period of preparation for the Sacrament.
