Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS October 26, 2008

1

Praised by you,
God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no power for good
which does not come from your covenant,
and no promise to hope in,
that your love has not offered.
Strengthen our faith to accept your covenant
and give us the love to carry out your command.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

ALL SAINTS DAY
The United States Bishop’s decided that when All Saints Day falls on a Saturday, as it does this year, it is not a holy day of obligation. Therefore we will have our regular Saturday evening Mass at 5:30pm.

NOVEMBER THE REMEMBRANCE OF ALL SOULS
This year the Solemnity of All Souls falls on a Sunday. During our regular Sunday liturgy we will be including in our prayers of the faithful, the names of all from our parish community who have died in this past year. Please join us in keeping all of our faithful departed in your prayers throughout the month of November.

During the month of November we will have a Book of the Dead in the sanctuary of our church. Next to the Book you will find blank pages for you to take home and write in the names of your family and friends whom you would like to be remembered in our prayers. These pages will then be inserted into our Book of the Dead as a reminder of our prayers and love for all who have gone before us and await us now in the presence of Christ in heaven.

Reflecting the Gospel

2

Love is a word used profusely in song and poetry, in hellos and good-byes, in letters and eulogies. Some might argue it is used too much. Often our most sincere verbalizing of love is fairly exclusive: shared between engaged couples, with family members and other relatives, among close friends. In the gospel this Sunday Jesus speaks of love, and he does so in expansive terms. What Jesus’ opponents pose to him as a trap or a matter of profound practical importance. Love of God-which Jesus pairs with love of neighbor-is a down-to earth- norm that governs concrete interactions with our fellow human beings, especially the most needy among us. If we wish to love God, we must care for the vulnerable and needy neighbor.
The gospels command and reason for loving our neighbor is spelled out clearly in the first reading and psalm. Israel’s love of neighbor rests on two foundations. First, Israel knows from personal experience what it is to be treated badly; they must not treat others in that way. Second, because their God is compassionate, they (God’s people) must also be compassionate. The first reading stresses love of neighbor and, indeed, describes the kind of behavior that will lead us to eternal life. The responsorial psalm stresses love of God and that it is God’s love from which we ourselves derive the strength to love. The first reading reminds us of our responsibility and having a right perspective in relation to our neighbor; the responsorial psalm stresses the centrality of God as the starting point for all love.
The gospel brings these two together. It makes clear, on the one hand, exactly how central God is: love with all one’s heart, soul, mind. If the second commandment to love neighbor as self is like the first, then we might surmise that we must love our neighbor in the same way as we love God. Loving God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts; it is expressed in doing good for the sake of others.

You shall love the Lord your God. . .
You shall love your neighbor
as yourself.
Matthew 22: 37-39

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

Sometimes we compartmentalize our lives in such a way that we express our love of God only in terms of religious practices, for example, faithfully going to Sunday Mass, saying prayers, etc. Genuine love of God must also be expressed in care for windows, the orphan, the poor-indeed, all our neighbors. Thus, Jesus’ words in this gospel aren’t empty ones, for sure. He tells the Pharisees that they must love with their all. This is exactly what Jesus did-he loved with his all to the extend that he gave his life for us. Like Jesus, we demonstrate our loving God with our all by wholeheartedly giving to others. Love makes its demands on us.
Our love of God by loving neighbor in this life is a kind of “practice” for the life of fulfillment and total loving that will be ours as we share eternally in the messianic banquet. It is this promise of sharing in the messianic banquet that strengthens us to be self-giving as Jesus was. This is how we daily love our neighbor: by being self-giving in all we do, by caring for the good of others, by treating everyone we meet as if he or she were our neighbor. Thus, Jesus’ commandment to love is truly inclusive, moving us beyond the close circle we naturally love.
