Since Amber Alerts have been introduced, they have greatly helped to find lost children more quickly. But whether a child is lost a short time or a long time, the anguish of the parents is the same until the child is found. It is heart wrenching to see notices of people who have been missing for many years. Seeking the lost is something we humans do out of deep compassion and love. Even when a total stranger is lost, we take notice. Often times, for example, when there is a news of a toddler straying into the woods, we hear of hundreds of people turning up to begin the search. And what rejoicing occurs when someone is found! If this is true of us as humans, how much truer is it of our loving God! In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus uses not one but three parables to tell us how much God seeks us when we are lost, how much God rejoices when we are found. Jesus uses three situations to dramatize that whenever we stray from God’s steadfast compassion and love, God always seeks to find us and show us divine mercy. For our part, we must realize we are lost, recognize our need for God, and begin the journey home to be embraced by divine mercy. When God’s offer of mercy is met by our repentance, tall I heaven rejoice. God’s feast is about rejoicing over us humans who stray from God but repent and are welcomed back. When he returns to his father’s house, the younger son doesn’t deserve such lavish behavior on the part of the prodigal father. Yet the father is just that-prodigal, lavish in his love and compassion for this lost son. No calculating person would risk ninety-nine or nine for one, or have a feast for one who has squandered so much. No one today would turn a house upside down to find a lost penny. But God does not act like us calculating humans-God always acts with the utmost compassion and love. God always knows when we are lost and gives us every means to come back. God desires that no one by lost. For this we rejoice and feast.

THANK YOU CONNIE!
Thank you Connie Bilton-Smith for 2 years of dedicated service to the children, parents, catechists, aides, and a myriad of volunteers in our Religious Education Program. Connie graciously stepped in to coordinate our Religious Education programing following the unexpected departure of Sue Unger and has been a blessing to our community. Connie’s constant sense of joy, her willingness to bravely go where no CRE has gone before her, her dedication to the support and encouragement of the catechists have all been gifts she has graciously and generously shared with us. She will be most remembered for her unsurpassed Vacation Bible School program. Connie leaves as the CRE in order to spend more retirement play-time with her husband. Thank you Connie! You are a Gift to us All!!

WELCOME JODY PATERSHALL & HERIBERTO AGUILAR!
We welcome Jody Patershall as the new CRE for the English K-5th Grade Religious Education Program. Jody is a long time active parishioner who has been a part of our Religious Education program as an Aide, a Catechist, support person, and in an assistant role to Connie. Jody brings a wealth of talent, skill, knowledge and care to the position and we are excited to have her join the Religious Education - Pastoral Team of St. Patrick. Please wish Jody a warm welcome and when she comes calling for your volunteer help with our programing, say YES!

This September we are proud to announce that Heriberto Aguilar will be officially changing his position at St. Patrick from Parish Maintenance to Hispanic Minister. Heriberto will coordinate the Spanish language Religious Education Program grades 1-6, adult faith and liturgical ministry opportunities. While Heriberto has filled many of these roles as a volunteer, we are happy to welcome him into “formal ministry.” Over the years Heriberto has participated in numerous educational opportunities offered throughout the Archdiocese and is well known throughout both the Vicariate and the Archdiocese. He is a respected leader among the Hispanic community and we are blessed by his dedication, commitment, and care. Please offer Heriberto your congratulations when you see him!

GRAND PIANO FUND
Many thanks to everyone who purchased keys for our “new” baby grand piano. We will be glad to “double-name” keys, leaving any balance for tuning or other music needs. Please remember to make your $30 (per key) check payable to “St. Patrick Piano Fund”. Please make your selection and leave your checks with the music representative in the vestibule of the church. If you have ‘reserved’ a key or have no particular key preference, you may also leave the check in the parish office. Thank you again for your enthusiastic support!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD BANK NEEDS YOU!
Two drivers are needed on the 4th Wednesday of each month. If you would like to volunteer your time and would like to help, please contact Karen Sadoff, 503-266-9416.

Sending all our Grandparents
special Blessings
on Grandparents Day
September 12

God of all wisdom,
you formed humankind
in your own likeness
and gave us an intellect
to help us know you,
our Creator, and the world you made.
As we begin this new academic year,
enlighten the minds of students
with the inquisitiveness that seeks
ever greater knowledge and understanding.
Give teachers and professors
the wisdom needed
to guide the intellectual
endeavors of those
entrusted to them.
Help all who fund and support education
to recognize the value of discovering more
about the world you have created
and so draw ever closer to you,
our Maker.
Amen.
