Weekly Bulletin

SUNDAY MASS

God our Father,
in obedience to you
your only Son accepted death on the cross
for the salvation of mankind.
We acknowledge the mystery of the cross on earth.
May we receive the gift of redemption in heaven.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
Amen

IT’S ABOUT TIME. . .
To replace the carpets in the Church. Have you noticed the stains and worn spots? The tread on the stairs to the balcony is so worn and loose it is dangerous. How many of you were married, or your children married, in the church when the red carpet was new? Now our children and grandchildren are getting married here at St. Patrick. The carpet is 30 years old. It IS about time to put in something attractive, something of quality, that is durable, and that will last a long time.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION:
An invitation and a volunteer opportunity
Eucharistic Adoration is a individual faith building devotion, a quiet prayer time before the exposed Blessed Sacrament on the Church Altar. At St. Patrick we are planning in October to begin a weekly time for adoration on Thursdays, 12noon-8pm. You may drop in anytime, even for half an hour, or better for a holy hour. We must have two volunteers assigned (one hour per week per volunteer) to be with the sacrament at all times. Thank you to all of those who have volunteered for an hour in the past and in the present. We could use more volunteers to fill out the schedule, so if you want to sign up for an hour (or be a substitute) please call Adeline Dawson 503-266-3039, or Dave Bernklau 503-651-3708. Next to the Mass, this is a great way to pray and develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord. He loves you.

HOPE VILLAGE MASS
This Wednesday, September 17 at 10:30am is our monthly Mass at Hope Village. However, due to the flu, you are asked to call the office on Tuesday to see if this mass will take place or not. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the Mass with the residents of Hope Village. The Mass is held in the library of the Assisted Living side of the facility. Visitors are asked to park on the side and back parking lots, please.

Reflecting the Gospel

fp

"...obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!" —Philippians 2:8

Only every five or six years are we privileged to celebrate this feast day on a Sunday when most of the community gathers to celebrate. In the popular mind the real feast of the cross is Good Friday, when our attention is naturally turned to the paschal events. Why this feast in the fall? Historically, September 14, 320, is the date when the empress Helena (Constantine’s Mother) reportedly found the true cross. We are reminded, though, that this secondary feast of the cross celebrates the same mystery: the cross is less remembered as an instrument of torture and death than as a instrument of glory, salvation, and life. In both the first reading and gospel for this Sunday, the instruments that bring death also bring life. For this reason, the cross is not despised but exalted. Clearly, the cross is both an instrument of death and of life. But to pass over from death to risen life, Jesus emptied himself, humbled himself, and became obedient to his Father. All of this brings exaltation to Jesus and brings us exaltation when we respond to God’s great love for the world by believing and embracing the cross of obedient self-emptying. In this way are we exalted, sharing now in Jesus’ glory and receiving the promise of “eternal life.” The depth of God’s love for the world becomes fully revealed in the death of Jesus on the cross. Through the self-emptying obedience of Jesus, the cross, a sign of ignominy, becomes a sign of exaltation-not only of Jesus himself who God lifts up in glory but also of all of us who gaze on the cross in faith and are lifted up to eternal life. The challenge of this feast and its proper readings is to see through the cross to the eternal life that it promises. The way to this eternal life is through humble obedience and through believing in God’s “only Son”. Obedience and belief are two sides of the same coin. Both obedience and belief draw their efficacy by being in relationship with another. In terms of the cross, that “other” is Jesus himself. He is the model for our embracing the cross as both dying to self and rising to glory. Herein is the mystery: in dying to self, in self-emptying, we are more perfectly conformed to Christ. And this is the whole goal of our Christian life: conformity to Christ. Thus we can rightly say, in the very dying is the rising; in the self-emptying is the new life; in the suffering is the glory. This is the why this day is rightly named the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Center and place them near the gym doors. If the doors are open, please place them inside the gym doors otherwise just place them outside the doors. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

WHAT HAPPENING

KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE - WE ARE CALLED TO PROTECT

s4
The Archdiocese of Portland has partnered with Presidium, a national research and training organization to provide a comprehensive program aimed at keeping our churches and Catholic schools safe from sexual misconduct and abuse. This comprehensive program addresses the sensitive issue of sexual abuse in clear, informative, and age appropriate manners. Focusing on personal boundaries and an awareness of inappropriate or unacceptable behavior, Called to Protect helps people of all age levels know what to be aware of in appropriate or inappropriate actions among people. Adult Called to Protect presentations are a combination of DVD presentations and discussions and take approximately 2 ½ hours. All employees of the Archdiocese, individual Parishes and Catholic Schools, including all clergy, are required to attend the Called to Protect presentation for Youth and Ministries. All volunteers of the Archdiocese, parishes and Catholic Schools are required to attend the Called to Protect for Youth and Ministries as well. In addition, the Archdiocese has required Catholic Schools and Parishes to make available Called to Protect for Youth and Parents for all parents, grandparents, family members and general adult audiences, and Called to Protect for Youth, a 1 hour DVD presentation followed by discussion, for all Jr. & Sr. High School students. Called to Protect for K - 5th Grade students consists of 1 - 20 minute lesson, incorporated into their regular curriculum focusing on God’s love and personal boundaries. This year we have scheduled all age appropriate Called to Protect presentations during the first 3-5 weeks of Religious Education programing. Our parents meetings will include the Called to Protect presentation appropriate for the age group of the children. I highly encourage all parents with a child or children in our Religious Education programing to make it a priority to attend these scheduled Parent Meetings. The information and the language and technique necessary to talk with your children about this sometimes uncomfortable subject matter are a valuable tool for families during these changing times. The information and skills learned from the Called to Protect presentations will help you to help your children keep safe wherever they are.
