Father,
you show your almighty power
in your mercy and forgiveness.
Continue to fill us with your gifts of love.
Help us to hurry toward the eternal life you promise
and come to share in the joys of your kingdom.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

Reflecting the Gospel
![]() |
Anyone who has adolescents or has worked with them knows how important belonging to a group is to them. It’s perhaps the most important aspect of their young lives; the need to belong is at the basis of peer group pressure-they will do anything at all in order to belong. Being part of and accepted by a circle of close friends is how these young people begin to sort out their self-identity. Although as we grow older this intense need for belonging lessens somewhat and it isn’t the most important driving force in our lives. Some groups are essential-our work associates, for example. Some groups have membership by choice-social groups and clubs, for example. In the gospel this Sunday we hear that mere membership in a group is certainly not the last word. Membership also has its responsibilities. When it comes to membership in the community of disciples, we must take on the vision and goals of Jesus and work diligently to implement them in daily life. This is true discipleship-this ultimately is true membership. The disciples ask Jesus a question about group membership; Jesus answers with the deeper meaning of what following him really means. Following Jesus is not about being a card-carrying Christian; it’s not about having a baptismal certificate framed and handing on a wall. Even if one is counted a disciple-is part of a group-but causes harm to another, that one is not a follower of Jesus. Following Jesus means that the hard work of discipleship is being true to Jesus, not only in our words but especially in our actions and behaviors. The disciples were worried about other people’s behavior who were not part of their group, and Jesus admonishes them to look to their own behavior. We are to root out the cause of sin in us at all costs-root out whatever is not consistent with who Jesus calls us to be. What is at stake is “entering into the kingdom of God,” entering into fullness of life. Discipleship is decided by our behavior rather than by our being in the inner circle. What is crucial to discipleship is how we act. Jesus uses extreme terms to tell us that we must turn from whatever is inconsistent with acting in his name. Any behavior that causes us to sin or to lead others into sin must be cut off. Any attitude that limits the presence and power of the Spirit must also be cut off. Being a disciple demands radical choices about how we live and relate to others.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES HAVE STARTED
We are still taking registrations every Sunday in the Parish Center. We are hoping to have all registrations by Oct. 4. Classes for Pre-school thru 5th grade are 9:45am-10:45am - Preschool and Nursery 11am. We are excited about starting our programs and meeting each of you and your child! Please keep all of our teachers, assistants and children in your daily prayers. Pray for the gift of wisdom and understanding for everyone. We are blessed to be called by Christ to be Eucharist to each other.
REGISTRATION FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION AND EUCHARIST are now being taken. We have 10 children registered for First Reconciliation. Our Introduction Night is October 5, 7pm in rooms 7/8 in the Parish Center. Both parent and child will be attending these evenings. Children will have classes with Julie O’Connor while parents meet in Room 7/8. We are using the parent/child books as a supplement in the second grade class this year. This will reinforce the parent teaching at home - Parent will be the primary teacher as always. A letter will be sent to all registered families with information about the program. Thank you for the desire to have your child receive these life and grace giving sacraments.
NURSERY NEWS
We are open but we are in need of parents to organize a team to help with nursery. If we have parents to help we would be able to have younger infants taken care of during the 11am Mass. A much needed ministry. We also need crib sheets for the little cribs, toys need to be washed each week and we need Jr. High-High School students to help as aides. If you have the time and desire to help organize this ministry please call Connie at 503-266-9411.
VOLUNTEER LIST:
The list of volunteer time is being worked on. The list is getting longer and longer giving more opportunities for you to find a convenient time to share your gifts and talents. Thank you for your patience. You are appreciated and we are blessed by your helpfulness.
ROSARY CEREMONY - October 18 - 10:30am before the 11am Mass. Everyone in the parish is invited - especially parents and grandparents. Children Kindergarten - 5th grade will pray the Rosary as a group. Please honor our Holy Mother Mary with children while we pray. Thank you.
LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Through our baptismal anointing we truly are prophets; all of us are commissioned to speak and do deeds in the Lord’s name. Thus baptism is more than initiation into a group-it is the transformation of ourselves into disciples of Christ who follow the Teacher by faithful service “in his name.” Faithful service is not expressed in occasional good deeds but in on-going patterns of unselfish, life-giving behaviors.
As a follower of Christ, discipleship means doing something so great as volunteering for one of the liturgical ministries or so simple as taking the garbage out without being asked. It means that our words and actions are consistent with Gospel values. It means that we are ruthless about choosing to cut out behaviors inconsistent with Jesus’ values and gentle about choosing to do the works of the Teacher.

VENDORS WANTED
Sign up now to be a vendor at our 4th annual Holiday Bazaar November 14 & 15. Tables are $20 each. All items must be handmade. For an application please contact Angela Baker 503-407-7493.
TICKETS TO PORTLAND’S SINGING CHRISTMAS TREE
Celebrate Christmas. Celebrate Tradition. Are you interested in starting the Christmas season off right by attending by far the best Holiday Production in the northwest? Many of you know that Paul Crawford, a member of St. Patrick Church, has been singing with the group for many years. Paul and his wife Gail volunteer countless hours in helping with this production and we would love to support their efforts. This years guest performers include Timothy Greenidge, Michael Allen Harrison, Georgene Rice, Aaron Meyer, and The Jefferson Dancers.
To attend as a group, we must have a minimum of 15 people (last year, we had 32). Knowing that people hate to drive at night, I thought it would be best to attend an afternoon performance. Therefore, I reserved 40 tickets for the 2:30pm performance on Saturday, December 5 (Rows O thru R - the same section as last year). Based on purchasing 40 tickets, the price is $34.50 each. This includes the handling fee. These are excellent seats.
If you are interested, please call Duane Koser at 503-266-4489 or see me at coffee and donuts after the 8:30 Mass on 9/27, and 10/4. Tickets will be purchased on Monday, October 5th.
CAN YOU HELP?
Single mom would like someone to sit with her nine year old son while she goes to RCIA on Wednesday evenings. Need help from 6:45pm to 8:45pm. Can sit at my home in Canby (on NE 11th) or at your home. If you can help, please call April at 503-621-6070 or Debbie at the Parish Office.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Jesus wants us to be close to Him, to have an intimate relationship with Him and the only way to get there is to pray, frequently, deeply and with much vulnerability. As parishioners, one of the best ways to do this weekly is by spending an hour of quiet prayer time before Him in the Blessed Sacrament on the altar. This Eucharistic Adoration is open to all believers. It intensifies our relationship with Jesus, our Savior, the healer, and helps parish unity and spirituality. In October we are restarting a week day of Eucharistic Adoration in our church that will be every Thursday from 12noon to 8pm and we could use more volunteers. The more adorers the better, but we must have at least 2 people with the Blessed Sacrament at all times and we normally do this in one hour shifts. If you can’t take an hour shift regularly, you can sign up as a substitute also. Sign up sheets will be available in the back of church after all the Masses this weekend. For information please contact Adeline Dawson, 503-266-3039 or Dave Bernklau, 503-651-3708.
MONTHLY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
You are invited to spend an hour or two in Eucharistic Adoration the firstSunday of every month following the 4:00 pm Mass from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All are invited to come and spend a bit of quiet time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Next Sunday Adoration is October 4.
