First Sunday after Easter
March 30, 2008

Heavenly Father and God of Mercy,
we no longer look for Jesus among the dead,
for he is alive and has become the Lord of Life.
From the waters of death you raise us with him
and renew your gift of life within us.
Increase in our minds and hearts
the risen life we share with Christ
and help us to grow as your people
toward the fullness of eternal life with you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

IN SYMPATHY
Please keep in your prayers Ed Lowry, the brother of Mary Jane Bunch and the brother-in-law of Matthew Bunch who passed away this past week. Please remember to keep all of our parishioners and loved ones who have passed away in our thoughts and prayers.

FUNERAL
The funeral for Joyce Carroll will be Saturday, April 5 at 11:00am here at St. Patrick Church.

DIVINE MERCY NOVENA & CHAPLET
This morning, March 30th at 10:00am following the 8:30am Mass, we will offer the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy. The Divine Mercy originated with Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, in the early 1930's. In her spiritual diary, St. Faustina writes of the revelation of God to her of his merciful presence in the world and of the necessity to offer prayers for his mercy. His message to her was three-fold: Ask for his Mercy, Be Merciful to others in return, and Completely trust in Jesus.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR
Children of the parish are invited to gather once again to practice for two upcoming liturgies: First Communion on Sunday, April 27 at 1:00pm and Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11 at 11:00am. Rehearsals will be on the following Sundays: March 30, April 6, 20, April 27, and May 4 from 12:15-1:00pm. Please come and help beautify these liturgies with your singing. For more information, call Lora Heli at 503-263-3840.

Reflecting on the Gospel

p0

In this Easter gospel Thomas is struggling to believe. Our Lord is so patient: he gives Thomas two chances. One, to believe without seeing; the other, to believe because he has seen. Thomas, who was absent during the first encounter with the risen Lord, does not believe the witness of the other disciples; he wants tangible evidence. The risen Lord obliges a week later when he again appears and offers Thomas his wounds to touch. Rather than touch Jesus, however, Thomas only utters a profound profession of faith. Clearly this gospel is about seeing, but another, deeper layer is gradually unfolded. Thomas’s seeing is concerned with the physical presence of the risen Christ and his wounds. However, Jesus leads the disciples into the deeper meaning of seeing: today we “see” Jesus through our being faithful to the mission he gives us. What does it mean to believe in the resurrection of Jesus? Like Thomas, many of us struggle with belief. Too often, however, our struggle is similar to Thomas’: we want tangible evidence. The twist of the gospel lies in the kind of tangible evidence we are given: the tangible presence of the risen Jesus is found in our being sent to continue the mission of Jesus; the tangible evidence of the presence of the risen Jesus is found in receiving the Holy Spirit so we can do the good works of faithful disciples. Coming to believe, then, means to stake our lives on the risen Jesus whom we have not seen and to accept a mission to the world. Jesus’ resurrection has implications for more than just him: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Jesus makes clear that for which we are sent: to see, believe, receive the Holy Spirit; forgive sins, have life. This is the gift of risen life Jesus gives us and we bring to others. Risen life is the sheer joy of seeing Jesus present in ourselves who serve and in others whom we serve. Risen life is the sheer glory of sharing in the fruits of resurrection: the forgiveness and peace that strengthen the relationship we have with the risen One and with each other. Thus, in the gospel, believing in the risen Jesus means more than accepting the fact of his resurrection; it means doing as Jesus does: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And Jesus makes clear that for which we are sent: to bring others to peace, forgiveness and new life. He also gives us the power to fulfill this mission: the Holy Spirit.

One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card, St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

ADULT SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

Adult scripture reflection will continue on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. The Bible study groups will return to their normal agenda starting this week, April 2. If you would like to join any of the groups you are more than welcome. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
What is the tangible evidence today of the presence of the risen Lord? The other readings give us ample clues: we encounter the risen Lord in the breaking of the bread; in the mercy, everlasting love, and help of God; and in new birth, living hope, imperishable inheritance, safeguard of God’s protection during times of trial, and rejoicing. How is all of this tangible? The reading from Acts presents a picture of a community living its belief in the risen Jesus and carrying on his mission: “All who believed were together and had all things in common.” In our communal life is Jesus present! We encounter the risen Christ in each other. Thomas was first challenged to believe without tangible evidence. We have tangible evidence of Christ’s risen presence in the good works of each other. For us it’s not “seeing” that leads to believing, but believing that leads to seeing. Then, like Thomas, we look and see and say, “My Lord and my God!”
