Reflecting on the Gospel

pv

Lines often imply restrictions. For example, a text box in a word processing document sets lines outside of which we cannot write. Parents sometimes set limits and the children know they cannot “cross the line.” Employees unsatisfied with contract negotiations sometimes set up picket lines and expect them not to be crossed. In the gospel today another kind of “line” is presented to us: the “gate” into the sheepfold. Similar to “lines”, we encounter “gates” in many areas of our lives. There are gated communities, gates for entry into theater and sporting events, toll gates. Each gate represents both a dividing line and a means of entry. What does Jesus divide? What does Jesus open up? This gospel gate is symbolic and delineates a space between “here” and “there”-a space between danger and lurking death, and safety and promised abundant life. On this Fourth Sunday of Easter we celebrate what we have traditionally called “Good Shepherd Sunday.” This year’s gospel is particularly interesting in that the image for Jesus is not primarily as shepherd, but as gate. The image of the gate directs our attention to Jesus as the risen One who always recognizes us and cares for us (yes, Jesus is the Good Shepherd). Jesus declares himself to be “gate.” The gate is the dividing line between the threats of the outside world and the safety of the sheepfold. It is also the passageway from life lived in the shadow of death to the abundance life of the Good Shepherd. Everything hinges on the Gate. During this Easter season we leisurely bask in the joy and promise of the resurrection. But this Sunday’s gospel and the second reading also remind us that danger and death are always lurking near, even as we celebrate risen life. Initially, following Jesus will lead to insult, suffering, judgment, and the cross. But Easter always reminds us that it leads us even further to abundant life. “But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.” Twice in the gospel Jesus declares himself to be the gate. The twist of the gospel is that the gate is also a symbol for the shepherd-the gate itself is both a barrier and a protection. Thus, rather than a line not to be crossed, the gather invites us to cross through, to enter into the safety and protection Jesus offers. Thus, in this gospel passage the gate doesn’t confine but opens up a space of security, peace, and protection. This is where resurrection faith leads us: “that we might have life and have it more abundantly.”

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
John 10:1-10
Kenneth Grahame

The Wicket

There are gates and there are gates. Your ordinary gate gives access to your front yard or some fenced-in field. But then there’s the gate Kenneth Grahame writes about in his essay “The Fairy Wicket,” which can lead you beyond the ledger books and drudgery of adult survival back to the world you knew so well when you were a child. Wicket is simply a quaint word for gate, and therefore Grahame felt it an appropriate term to apply to that special gate that can conduct us into a world where fantasy reigns supreme.
Of course, in his essay Grahame laments the gradual disappearance of that magic gate as we grow older. It once was everywhere to be found, through which we might behold elfin dances or some prince upon a white charger or meet some chipmunk endowed with speech and wisdom. But then along came schooldays (or “schooldaze”) and cheerless classrooms and prolonged hours spent indoors over sums and syntax and the acquisition of skills geared to make us productive cogs of the business world and poof!-the wicket became hardly visible anymore.
Occasionally, Grahame notes, it might seem right around the bend of some lane on a weekend’s excursion in the country or certainly just the other side of that row of elm trees. You can almost hear it “swinging to its familiar click.” But no, he says it always fails to materialize. The landscape remains prosaic. Then again, “a certain bottle of an historic Chateau-Yquem, hued like Venetian glass, odorous as a garden in June” may conjure up the presence of that lost gate and beyond it a vision of ancient France and dueling courtiers and stately ladies. But “Alas! Too shallow the bottle, too brief the brawls: not to be recalled by any quantity of Green Chartreuse.”
But I’ll tell you one place you can still find that gateway to a vision and experience of Paradise! Go visit any ancient cathedral in Europe that goes back a thousand years and approach its portal. You’ll see no mere door but a work of art that may show, centered amide sculptures of saints and angels, an image of Mary under the title Porta Coeli (Gate of Heaven). Or you may see a sculptured Christ up at the top of the

portal’s arch, swinging wide open the doorway to his wedding banquet while on his left five foolish virgins (their eyes heavy with sleep, their lamps extinguished) miss out on the festival, while on his right five wise virgins stand wide awake to his kingdom all aglow.
But such art our ancestors, who built those cathedrals, were trying to tell us that every cathedral, and therefore the Church itself, is the magic gateway that can convey us into a more profound experience of life and reality than we might otherwise realize. Their architecture helps us visualize what Christ in today’s Gospel says of himself: “I am the gate; whoever enters by me will be saved and will come in an go out and find pasture.”
Here ultimately is the magic wicket, the elusive gate Kenneth Grahame and so many souls seek: Christ and his Christic way of being. And here’s the surprise effect of our passing through that Christic gate and becoming Christic ourselves: we may now say of ourselves what Christ says of himself: “I am the gate.” For whenever we behave in a Christlike way, compassionately and generously, we ourselves become the magic wicket by which others may gain access to God and by which God may gain access to this world to make of it a Garden of Eden once more. You see the gate swings both ways.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR A CLASSROOM PRAYER TABLE?
Prayer is part of the fabric of our Catholic faith. Fostering a sense of prayer is an important part of the Religious Education programing of St. Patrick. An important aspect for our life of prayer is the establishment of “holy places,” in our homes and in our classrooms. We are in the process of creating such places of prayer for each classroom in our parish center. Each room will have a corner prayer shelf with a standing icon and a prayer candle. The shelves have already been completed and have been installed in most of the classrooms. We are now ready to purchase the individual standing icons for each room. The cost for each 11" x 14" icon, which includes matching stand and shipping charges is $60.00. We have 14 classrooms and meeting rooms we are preparing prayer tables for. If you would like to sponsor an icon for a classroom contact Sue Unger or Sara Creel at the parish office. The icons selected are; St. Patrick, Sts. Peter & Paul, St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Vincent dePaul, St. Therese of the Little Flower, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Blessed Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe, The Good Shepherd, and the Twelve Apostles at Table.

BNETS@VVY
The National Education Association is pleased to present to you bNetS@vvy, a new bi-monthly newsletter designed to help educators and parents keep kids safer online. This newsletter is packed with articles by teachers, experts and young teens themselves, covering topics such as cyberbullying, internet predators and keeping kids save online.

THANK YOU
We would like to thank the many families of the parish who always come forward to help with providing a dish or two for the number of funeral luncheons we have here at St. Patrick. Also, to the wonderful ladies who always come forward to assist Ellen Hannan with the luncheon. Your help and support is so appreciated by Ellen and St. Patrick Parish and your generosity and kindness is a wonderful gift to the grieving family. If you are missing a dish or two, please take a moment to look in the kitchen of the Parish Center. Your dish may be there. The Parish Center is open Monday - Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-12noon or on Sunday’s after the Masses.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
This gospel assures us that the risen One, the Good Shepherd, is truly there for us, calls us by name, leads us to abundant life. Thus does Jesus model for us how we, too, are to be both gate and shepherd. The second reading gives us a practical blueprint for our shepherding: patience in suffering, doing good, return no insult or threat, hand ourselves over for the good of others. This may seem like a tall order, and it is. However, Jesus is always there, walking “ahead of” us, guiding us toward being good shepherds ourselves. We are reminded this Sunday that our simple, everyday actions of being faithful to the gospel are how we live out our baptism, our entry into following Jesus. When we embrace our baptismal commitment we enter through Jesus the gate into a life of being gate and shepherds of ourselves.
