Reflecting on the Gospel

pv

A half century ago, mansions were something of awe-large, spacious dwelling places set on estate-size properties meticulously landscaped and groomed. Most of the folks from this era lived in much, much more modest dwellings. Singer Pete Seeger popularized in 1962 a children’s song “Little Boxes,” with words and music by Malvina Reynolds. This was the era of the beginning of suburbs, with rows and rows of houses constructed all of the same blueprint. The song parallels these “little boxes” made of “ticky-tacky with the lives of those who live in them-all the same. Today our suburbs often are laid out with anything but ticky-tacky little boxes-the houses are increasingly huge, multi-million dollar dwellings. Jesus speaks of dwelling places in this Sunday’s gospel however, the dwelling places of which Jesus speaks are neither “little boxes” nor sprawling, multi-million dollar mansions. Jesus speaks of his “Father’s house,” dwelling places,” and “preparing a place.” At first, we, like the disciples, might think of this as a physical location, a destination such as we could find if we knew “the way.” Jesus, however, leads us to a deeper understanding when he reveals where he and the Father dwell: within one another. One surprise of the gospel is that Jesus’ dwelling place is not a space but a relationship: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me.” The way to this dwelling place is Jesus who leads us into the heart of God. The gospel is challenging us to enter into a profound relationship with Jesus, which ultimately means we share a profound relationship with the Father as well. In the second reading St. Peter, like St. John, speaks of our intimate relationship with God in Christ, but he uses different images. God dwells-not in a house of stone-but in a spiritual house made of living stones. We are that spiritual house, those living stones, because we are “chosen and precious in the sight of God.” Another surprise of the gospel is that there are, indeed, “many dwelling places” as many as there are faithful disciples who are the spiritual house, the living stones, the presence of the risen Jesus for each other. The astounding message of the risen Jesus is that we ourselves are the living, risen Jesus! Jesus admonishes us to do the “works that I do.” The first “work” is to open ourselves to God’s indwlling-everything else depends on this.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

John 14: 1-12
Francis Thompson

Turn But a Stone

In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. . . . And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” Where is this “Father’s house” of which Jesus speaks? The apostle Thomas and Philip assume it is at some distance from the world in which we live. Thomas says, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Philip simply asks for a glimpse of this invisible Father.
Jesus says, in effect, “It’s not far away. In fact, you’re right on the threshold of it. I myself am the path and, as a matter of fact, whoever has seen me has already seen the Father, for I am in the Father and the Father in me.”
Being Fragile, feeling unsubstantial and often of little account, we human beings have always assumed that substance, power, and worth lay somewhere else, at some great distance from “poor me.” This has led to our literal acceptance of political and religious aristocracies down through the ages. In olden times we assumed kings and nobility were superior; nowadays we look with envy on the rich and famous. And then there were the religious hierarchies, the high priests of the many temples of the world, superior, “holier,” closer to divinity than we. And of course, ultimately all substance and worth lay with God, who dwelled at an infinite distance from this passing world.
Well, the Gospel of John would disabuse us of this nonsense. The heavenly realm, the Father’s house to which Jesus is about to go, is just a step away from Thomas and Philip and us. You can just reach out and touch it if you want. Our Father’s house is simply the unfolding world that lies just on the other side of our fears and doubts the moment we let faith and compassion take over our senses: our eyes and ears and fingertips. The world itself then becomes a grand temple, a cathedral, and every one of us a priest, ordained by God to live liturgically within it, to become what an old hit song called “Poetry In Motion.”

Francis Thompson was well aware of this when he wrote his poem

“The Kingdom of God”:
O World invisible, we view thee,
O World intangible, we touch thee,
O World unknowable, we know thee,
Inapprehensible, we clutch thee!

Does the fish soar to find the ocean,
The eagle plunge to find the air-
That we ask of the stars in motion
If they have rumour of thee there?

Not where the wheeling systems darken,
And our benumbed conceiving soars-
The drift of pinions, would we hearken,
Beats at our own clay-shuttered doors.

The angels keep their ancient places;-
Turn but a stone, and start a wing!
‘Tis ye, ‘tis your estrangèd faces,
That miss the many-splendoured thing.

One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR A CLASSROOM PRAYER TABLE?
Prayer is part of the fabric of our Catholic faith. Fostering a sense of prayer is an important part of the Religious Education programing of St. Patrick. An important aspect for our life of prayer is the establishment of “holy places,” in our homes and in our classrooms. We are in the process of creating such places of prayer for each classroom in our parish center. Each room will have a corner prayer shelf with a standing icon and a prayer candle. The shelves have already been completed and have been installed in most of the classrooms. We are now ready to purchase the individual standing icons for each room. The cost for each 11" x 14" icon, which includes matching stand and shipping charges is $60.00. We have 14 classrooms and meeting rooms we are preparing prayer tables for. If you would like to sponsor an icon for a classroom contact Sue Unger or Sara Creel at the parish office. The icons selected are; St. Patrick, Sts. Peter & Paul, St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Vincent dePaul, St. Therese of the Little Flower, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Blessed Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe, The Good Shepherd, and the Twelve Apostles at Table.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Knights of Columbus and Men’s Club Scholarship Program will provide joint scholarships to current high school graduates who are members of St. Patrick Church in Canby. The Scholarship is for post secondary education and may be used at any accredited college or university. The Scholarship application is available at the Parish Office. The application needs to be filled out and returned to the Parish Office no later than May 12. The scholarship will be awarded at the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Saturday, May 31st at the 5:30pm Mass.

PRAYERS FOR CANDIDATES OF ST. PATRICK CHURCH
We invite all parishioners to please pray for the candidates that are preparing for First Communion and Confirmation this Spring. There are pictures in the vestibule of the church with a prayer for the candidates on the back. Please take a picture and take time to pray for these young people as they try to grow closer to God through the reception of the sacraments. There are cards with a Spanish translation of the prayer in a basket next to the pictures

BNETS@VVY

BIRD FEEDERS WANTED
Nicki Hollen, Activity Director for Hope Village is currently looking for someone in our parish who would be willing to make some bird feeders.
