Reflecting on the Gospel

ac

For the “NO!” of those “terrible twos” to the rebellion of adolescence to the independence of adulthood, we like to assert our own wills. Part of coming to maturity is learning how to submit our own wills to those of others for the good of all. Life can’t simply be about always getting what we want! This principle seems so simple, yet for some people putting their own will aside for others seems all but impossible. These people think of commandments as burdensome and restrictive. The gospel this Sunday shows us another way to look at commandme3nts-as expressions of our love for God. Keeping commandments must always be within the context of love. Commandments cannot be isolated laws kept for their own sake; if so, this only tends to breed resentment and anger and fear. Jesus suggests that we keep his commandments because our love for him has established a deep and intimate relationship between us that spills out into acts we know will be pleasing to the Beloved. Thus, love is revealed in a threefold action: Jesus loves his disciples by revealing himself to them, the Father shows love by sending the Spirit to dwell with disciples always, disciples love Jesus by keeping commandments. Thus, Jesus assures us we are not alone, we are not orphans. We are the beloved of God. In order to love Jesus, we must know the Spirit. When we open ourselves to the presence of the Spirit within us and God’s loving us first, keeping commandments is as natural as loving. We tend to think and work out of our love for God. The surprise of the gospel is that we really need to begin with God’s unfathomable love for us. Rather than burdensome laws, then, commandments are concrete expressions of our reciprocated love for God and each other. God has already given us the example: God’s love for us is so great that the only-begotten Son was sent as our Savior to live among us, die for us, and be raised to new life for us. Our love for God should be so great!

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
John 14:15-21

The Accuser, Who Accuses Us Day and Night,
Has been Deposed
(Revelation 12:10)

In the book of Job we are given a clear picture of what makes Satan diabolical. There he sits at God’s celestial cabinet meeting. God has just expressed admiration for his earthly servant Job. And Satan sneers, “Sure, Job looks good but how deep does it go? How can you be certain he’s not a fraud?” Like Shakespeare’s Iago (possibly the most diabolical villain in all literature), Satan stirs the pot. His name means “Adversary” and he exists to accuse us of anything he can ferret out.
And all the while we thought Satan’s role in history was to entice us to do wicked things. On the contrary, his role has been to accuse us of evil until we’re so browbeaten, we doubt we are of any worth at all, become bilious, desperate and give up-at which point Satan smiles his subtle smile of success.
Of course, you can’t see Satan, but he’s really present wherever the spirit of accusation dominates our lives. That’s just about everywhere, if you read the papers. I mean, before we’re five years old, we’re being summoned before the tribunal of parents, siblings, teachers, and peers for not measuring up to expectations.
It’s not long before the din of such criticism becomes so loud that we internalize it, so that in the absence of anyone else to accuse us, we’re quite ready to accuse ourselves: “why don’t you get your life together? When will you ever learn? Where did you get that hat?” Feeling up against the wall under such a barrage of judgment, we lash out, engage in counter accusations, and pretty soon we’re caught up entirely in that battle royal otherwise known as the politics of human experience. And Satan’s smile broadens-the spirit of accusation holds us ever more firmly in his closed fist.
The New Testament is about God’s decision to break the accuser’s enervating grip upon us. Look at the behavior of Jesus in so many Gospel scenes. When questioned as to why he dines with sinners, he says it’s because they are ill. You don’t drag illness into a courtroom-your treat it with compassion. Again we see him interfering with the execution of a woman caught in adultery. As her advocate he says, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”
Again we see him in the house of Simon the Pharisee (who under his breath finds fault with the party crasher at Jesus’feet).

“Let me tell you something,” says Jesus. “This woman has made mistakes but they carry little weight when balanced against her enormous love. You, Simon, might learn from her by curtailing your criticism just long enough to show minimum courtesy to your guests.”
And in the parable about the prodigal son, the forgiving father (embodying the Spirit of Christ) says to his judgmental older son”: “Give us a break. He was dead and now he’s alive; we lost him and now he’s back. Stow the vindictiveness and come, celebrate his existence and your own.”
It’s because Jesus is aware of the persistent shadow of the prince of darkness, this spirit of accusation that belabors us, that in today’s Gospel he promises to send us the Advocate, somebody to stand up for us, to remind us of the grace of God when we feel battered by accusations of failing to measure up. Amid such juridical bedlam we may find consolation in the signals of God’s own public defender within us saying, “Don’t worry. Your fate will not be determined before the judges of this world, but within the realm of a God of whom Scripture says, ‘If God is for us, who can be against you?. . . Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. Who will condemn?” (Romans 8:31-33).

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR GRADE SCHOOL
Our classes are nearing the end for the year. Our final session is May 4th. Children will meet in their classes at 9:45 am. We will have a crowning of Mary with a litany at 10 am in the Church. All are welcome to join us and honor our Spiritual Mother Mary. Following the 11am Mass there will be a party for all parishioners. There will be food, fun, and games. Come and help us celebrate the end of the Religious Education year. We ask all families to bring veggie trays, or fruit trays, or finger desserts. Drinks and Hot Dogs will be provided.

NEEDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Running a program needs lots of different kinds of things. For our final fun Friday we need door prizes we could store or restaurant gift certificates, tickets for movies, tickets for sporting events, games, balls, sporting equipment, MP3 players, Christian Rock CD’s, or anything that youth from 11-18 would enjoy. For youth ministry we are still hoping for a Wii system. Also we need someone who could repair our ping pong table. It has had a lot of use in the last two years and it is becoming almost impossible to use. We also would like to get a tool to help us with bulletin Boards. The Camera we have been using for the last 2 ½ years is beginning to show it’s age. We could use a new digital camera. The one we would like is a Nikon that has add on features. If you would like to help with any of these wishes please contact Sue Unger.

SUMMER NURSERY
Nursery will be open during the summer. We will put out a Nursery schedule in the next week for the summer. We always need volunteers to help with Nursery for youth and adults. Youth must be at least 13 yrs. old. We do have an active Nursery during the 11 am mass. We could always use more volunteers to make this happen. This ministry is a real gift for young families wanting to be able to fully participate in the Mass. For more information contact Angela Baker, Sara Dietz, or Sue Unger.

FAITH IN ACTION (9TH-12TH GRADES) meets on Sunday evening from 5:30 pm -7 pm in the Parish Center. All High School teens are welcome to join us. Watch the bulletin or contact Molly or Liz or Sue Unger for more information. Our next Youth Mass is Saturday, May 3rd . We can use more singers and volunteers to help with the different ministries. On May 16th Johannin Christian Rock Band will be here for a concert. We will start with dinner at 6 pm invite friends for a night of music, fun, door prizes and food. $10.00 per person.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
The Journey in Faith (6th- 8th grade) group meets on Wednesday night at 7 pm. Our last class for the year will be May 14th . I hope you have enjoyed the year and we look forward to seeing you back at class next year. Our next Fun Friday is May 16th (change of date) at 6 pm please come and join us to celebrate and play. We will have dinner to start at 6pm. We have invited the Christian Rock Group Johannin to entertain that night for our last fun Friday of the year. This night will be for all Jr High and Sr High Parishioners and friends. The cost will be $10.00 per person. If you are not signed up in classes please bring a parent to sign a permission slip for you to participate.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card, St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com. They will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR A CLASSROOM PRAYER TABLE?
Prayer is part of the fabric of our Catholic faith. Fostering a sense of prayer is an important part of the Religious Education programing of St. Patrick. An important aspect for our life of prayer is the establishment of “holy places,” in our homes and in our classrooms. We are in the process of creating such places of prayer for each classroom in our parish center. Each room will have a corner prayer shelf with a standing icon and a prayer candle. The shelves have already been completed and have been installed in most of the classrooms. We are now ready to purchase the individual standing icons for each room. The cost for each 11" x 14" icon, which includes matching stand and shipping charges is $60.00. We have 14 classrooms and meeting rooms we are preparing prayer tables for. If you would like to sponsor an icon for a classroom contact Sue Unger or Sara Creel at the parish office. The icons still available are; St. Patrick, Sts. Peter & Paul, St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John, St. Vincent dePaul, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Blessed Juan Diego, The Good Shepherd, and the Twelve Apostles at Table.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Knights of Columbus and Men’s Club Scholarship Program will provide joint scholarships to current high school graduates who are members of St. Patrick Church in Canby. The Scholarship is for post secondary education and may be used at any accredited college or university. The Scholarship application is available at the Parish Office. The application needs to be filled out and returned to the Parish Office no later than May 12. The scholarship will be awarded at the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Saturday, May 31st at the 5:30pm Mass.

SIGN UP TO WALK OR PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT FOR PR0-LIFE
Come and walk and/or pledge your support for our local Pregnancy Care Centers’ 11th Annual “Steps for Life”. The walk will take place on Saturday afternoon, May 10th in Molalla only. Registration is between 1-1:30pm. This easy 2-mile stroll is sponsored by the Pregnancy Care Centers of Canby, Molalla, and Woodburn, in order to raise funds to support this ministry. It’s easy to raise pledges so plan to get involved. Pledge forms are available after Mass. Help the Pregnancy Care Centers of the North Willamette Valley provide alternatives to abortion and share the love of Christ with women and teens who are unprepared for Pregnancy. Call Jerry Hunt at 503-266-4180 or Janet Ritchey at Canby PCC (503-266-8591) for more information, or talk to one of our representatives after Mass today. Come and join us and support this great cause.

SPECIAL THANKS
Thank you for your kind support of the Retirement Fund for the Religious Collection that was taken up on December 8-9, 2007. The people of this archdiocese have been remarkably generous throughout the 18 years this collection has been taken. St. Patrick gave a total of $2,134. Our Archdiocese has provided $215,721.88 this year to support retired religious men and women. You are remembered in the prayer of these priests, brothers and sisters. May God continue to bless you for the support you have provided. Sister M. Grace Schonlau, Sister Jane Lord.
