Reflecting on the Gospel

ht

Sometimes we grapple with things we don’t understand, and finally just throw our hands in the air and give up. For example, we might tackle the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle, go through the across and down clues and enter everything we know, then just give up. Or we might get a new computer with some new software, struggle to set it up ourselves and run the programs, and after a while just give up and call a technician. Or we might try to triple a recipe for a family gathering, get all tangled up in the measurements, and end up approximating and hoping the dish is edible. We are faced with struggles and problems every day; some (like a crossword puzzle) are of no consequence, so it doesn’t matter a whole lot that we don’t understand. Others may have some import, but after time are soon forgotten. Other things we don’t understand belong to the realm of “mystery” and they do have enormous consequences, for example, love, life, death, meaning. This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the greatest mystery we encounter because it brings us to the very inner life of God. We cannot understand the Trinity, to be sure, but the readings assure us never to doubt God’s love, mercy, and care. God is revealed to Moses as merciful, gracious, kind, and faithful. Yet, even this wonderful divine self-revelation was exceeded when God “gave his only Son” so that we might be saved. But even more: the fullest revelation of the grace, love, and fellowship of the Trinity is extended to us believers with the sending of the Spirit as a share in divine intimacy-eternal life itself. The unceasing work of the Trinity is this: to love us into divine presence, into eternal life. Thus, the mystery and majesty of God is not kept internal to the community of divine Persons, but is shared with us so that we might share in that very same divine life. In this is eternal life: to be absorbed into the very Persons of God. The only response to such a gift from our triune God is that of Moses, who at once bowed down to the ground in worship”. This mystery of the Trinity, then, does not so much challenge us to understanding as it challenges us to a worshipful response to God’s utter goodness and presence to us.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
Exodus 34:4-9

Good things Come in Threes

In our first reading for today from Exodus, the Church seems to find a hint of God’s being a Trinity, for God, having come down from a cloud, repeats his name three times: Lord, Lord, Lord. Now a modern biblical scholar may suggest we’re stretching things a bit to find the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of subsequent Christian tradition in so thoroughly Hebrew a book as Exodus. And I’m willing to concede the point. But the threefold repetition of God’s name in today’s passage does set me off on another inquiry. Why does the number three pop up so often in the Bible?
For example, Noah, after sailing around in his ark, sends out a bird three times to see if the waters have subsided-and on the third try the bird brings back evidence of land. Again, three is the number of Noah’s sons from whom the three branches of the human race known to the Hebrew author descended. Three is also the number of the great patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And three is the number of the angels who come to inform Abraham that his aged wife will have a son called “Laughter.”
Moving further into biblical history, we meet the hero Gideon who is told to reduce his huge army to a mere three hundred men (a multiple of three) before he can put the invading Midianites to flight. Then there’s the story of the boy Samuel, whom God calls in the night three times before he recognizes the voice and is anointed God’s prophet. Elijah’s history is not without some threes as well, as when he throws water three times upon the altar of sacrifice before calling down fire from heaven to impress the prophets of Baal. And as when he stretched himself three times on the body of a widow’s dead son and on the third try brought him back to life.
And there’s more! How many days was Jonah in the belly of the whale? Three! And how many were the children thrown into the fiery furnace by wicked King Nebuchadnezzar? Three-who remained unharmed while they sang away in the company of a celestial companion.

Carrying over into the New Testament we meet the Magi, whom the medieval Church assumed to be three in number and viewed them as representing the three phases of life: youth, middle age, and old age. And do you recall how it was “on the third day” that Jesus performed his first miracle at Cana and how, after hanging three hours on the cross, it was “on the third day” that he rose from the dead? And do you remember how, when he ascended Mount Tabor, he took with him three disciples (the same three he took with him into the Garden of Gethsemane) and how Peter, seeing Jesus flanked by Elijah and Moses, wanted to put up three tabernacles there?
It was this same Peter who denied Jesus three times and was then put to the test after the Resurrection when Jesus asked him three times: “Do you love me?” Nor is Saint Paul without a tendency to arrange things in threes, as when, at the end of his wonderful poem on love, he says, “And so there remain these three: faith, hope and love.” This finally brings me back to that other threesome whose festival we celebrate today-of whom Jesus says at the end of Matthew’s Gospel: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
What can we make of all these biblical threes? One could speculate for hours and still be unsure. But one thing does stand out. In practically all the biblical episodes in which the number three occurs, something wonderful happens. Noah finds land. Abraham and Sarah have a son. A widow’s child is restored to life. A transfiguration takes place. Water is changed into wine. Jonah is regurgitated by a whale. Jesus rises from his tomb. Three children survive a fiery furnace. And Peter leans how to say, “I love you.”
So whatever meaning scholars may allow regarding the three-fold utterance of God’s name in our first reading, I’m impressed enough by the frequency of the number three in the Bible to revive my old Christian custom of saying the Angelus three times a day (at dawn, noon, and eventide)- just to be in tune with the apparently triplicate nature of our spiritual universe!

Sacrament registration will happen in the Fall. You must provide a baptismal copy at the time of registration if you were not baptized at St Patrick.

NEEDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Running a program needs lots of different kinds of things. For youth ministry we are still hoping for a Wii system. Also we need someone who could repair our ping pong table. It has had a lot of use in the last two years and it is becoming almost impossible to use. We also would like to get a tool to help us with bulletin Boards. The Camera we have been using for the last 2 ½ years is beginning to show it’s age. We could use a new digital camera. The one we would like is a Nikon that has add on features. If you would like to help with any of these wishes please contact Sue Unger.

SUMMER NURSERY
Nursery will be open during the summer. We always need volunteers to help with Nursery for youth and adults. Youth must be at least 12 yrs. old. We do have an active Nursery during the 11 am mass. We could always use more volunteers to make this happen. This ministry is a real gift for young families wanting to be able to fully participate in the Mass. For more information contact Angela Baker, Sara Dietz, or Sue Unger.

Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry
On June 13th from 7-11 pm we have been invited to join St Luke’s youth group at Bullwinkle’s . It will be $24.00 per person. There will be flyers that will come to you in the mail. Watch the bulletin for summer activities.

We are looking at a beach or camping trip on the weekend of July 18th – 20th . Summer Road Trip for teens will be to Steubenville NW in Spokane WA at Gonzaga University. YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card, St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.
