Reflecting on the Gospel

m1

On any sunny, summer day on a beach, one can usually find small children with sand buckets and shovels building sand castles. The children tend to build too close to the water, probably because the sand is wet there and easier to pack down and form. However, invariably a larger wave will come along and wash the castle away. Undaunted, the little ones just begin again, still too close, and the efforts wash away once more. Hour after hour can be spent this way, with the children seemingly never learning. The lure to be near the water is too great, in spite of dire results. In the gospel for this Sunday, Jesus admonishes us to build on rock, not sand. Rain, floods, wind might buffet a house built on rock, but it will stand. If rain or waves buffet a house built on sand, away it goes. Jesus’ words are too important to risk being washed away; what is at stake is entering “the kingdom of heaven.” Ultimately, the gospel is about a choice we must make: to do God’s will by listening to Jesus’ words. In the first reading and gospel we are confronted by both Moses and Jesus with this choice: obey God’s commandments lest we be cursed; obey Jesus’ words lest we see our life collapse around us. Listening will not alone bring salvation. Hearing Jesus’ words is to no avail if we do not act on them. Even doing mighty deeds means nothing if done apart from obedience to God’s will. What is the rock upon which we must build? The gospel answers twofold: listening to the words of Jesus and doing the will of God. Discipleship comes down to this: to live by Jesus’ words or not. There is no other choice. The wise know this. The consequences of this fundamental choice are clear: safety from the storm or ruin. We are to build our lives on the solid foundation of an obedient relationship to God and to Christ. Now Choose!

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
We invest a great deal of time and energy in making certain choices during our lives, for example, which house to buy, what school to attend, what career to choose, the best health plan, etc. And once we decide, we act on it. The gospel requires the same decisive action. Yes, in life we are faced with many choices, but the gospel informs us that there is one basic choice (the foundation, the rock) upon which all others must be made. That one choice is to live by Jesus’ words and put into action what we have heard. Without this foundation, all other choices are like building our life on sand. In fact, the fundamental choice is for a life that does not collapse or a life that does collapse. The fundamental choice is for a life in obedience to God, a life with God at the center. Unlike the examples of mighty deeds mentioned in the gospel (prophesying, driving out demons), what Jesus asks of us is simply to be faithful to this words and commandments in our everyday lives. Listening to his words may mean listening to another’s cry for help; or it may mean that we spend some time alone in quiet prayer, being attentive to Jesus’ abiding presence. Putting Jesus’ words into practice may mean taking the time to be kind to a coworker; or it may mean sharing our abundance with those less fortunate. Building on rock ultimately means that we choose to give our selves over for the good of another.

NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Romans 3:21-25, 28

MANIFESTO

Saint Paul wrote his letter to the Romans in 58AD while passing through the Greek city of Corinth. He had not yet been to Rome to visit the Christians living there. His work until then had been limited to the eastern side of the Mediterranean. Now he was eager to preach in its western region, even as far as Spain, and hoped to make Rome his base of operations. But he sensed a problem. The Roman Christians might be wary of him because of rumors they had heard.
You see, there were certain Christians back then, possibly former Pharisees like Paul, who followed him from town to town badmouthing him. “Watch out!” they might say. “Ths Paul fellow has gone off the deep end! His take on Christianity is too radical, irresponsible! He speaks of God as a God of absolute grace, mercy, and compassion, and no longer as that fulminous Judge we’ve known so well, with his rules and regulations, which are the only recipe we have to avert his wrath and win his favor.”
These Christians were reluctant to give up their former pharisaical principles. They wanted to keep the New Testament “Old”. They found a certain security in those kosher food laws and other practices whereby they could distinguish themselves from the profane world around them. What would become of society if all these props, along with the concept of God as overseer and judge, were to give way to a God of absolute mercy! The classroom would go wild; people would simply sin with abandon, if only to allow God ample opportunity to be even more merciful.
Well, if that’s what the Romans had been hearing, Paul had better write to clear the air-in a letter outlining his faith and its logic. “Look around you,” he writes. The pagan world is sinning without let up: greed, envy, murder, meanness, arrogance, selfishness everywhere. And now look at the so-called pious, who think that because they live under a judgmental God and possess his laws they have some guarantee that they can live proper lives and merit God’s reward and avoid his wrath. What do you see? Be honest. You see the same greed, arrogance, selfishness, and treachery. So! If God is to remain the strict Judge you cherish, who’s to escape his wrath. Nobody! By the logic of this juridical notion of God we are all doomed.

Unless there is an alternative vision of God! And that’s precisely what Jesus came to reveal-his parent and ours, a God of mercy, compassion, gracious intervention, who simply wants intimacy with each of us that we might inhale his expansive Spirit, transcend fear and dare to behave divinely. And do you fret that belief in a God of absolute grace will undermine morality? Do you hesitate to trust, to believe? Do you hesitate to step from your traditional life raft onto the waters where Jesus walks?
“Well, I guarantee you this. Once you experience God as a God of grace, who cares intimately and absolutely about you, who’s not out to frighten you the way human patriarchs do, who sees compassionately through your errors to the fear that produces them and longs to relieve your fear, supplant it with a new sense of worth- once you experience this, you may not go hog-wild at all like some kid when school lets out! Experiencing grace and compassion, you may in fact enjoy it so much, find it so contagious you will yourself become gracious and compassionate and thereby arrive at a level of morality far beyond what any scribe or legal system expects of you. By that I mean a spontaneous, authentic, imaginative morality that’s more like art than labor. Now that’s my Good News and Christ’s Good News! And as far as I’m concerned, nothing short of it will ever make any sense to me.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Registration papers will be sent out this summer. Registration weekends will be in August and September. You may send in your registrations at any time. Sacrament registration will happen in the Fall. If you are receiving sacraments this year you must provide a baptismal copy at the time of registration if you were not baptized at St Patrick.

NEEDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Running a program needs lots of different kinds of things. For youth ministry we are still hoping for a Wii system. Also we need someone who could repair our ping pong table. It has had a lot of use in the last two years and it is becoming almost impossible to use. We also would like to get a tool to help us with bulletin Boards. The Camera we have been using for the last 2 ½ years is beginning to show it’s age. We could use a new digital camera. The one we would like is a Nikon that has add on features. If you would like to help with any of these wishes please contact Sue Unger.

SUMMER NURSERY
Nursery will be open during the summer. Summer nursery will take children from 18 months to four years old. We always need volunteers to help with Nursery for youth and adults. To babysit, youth must be at least 12 yrs. old. Nursery is open during the 11am Mass. We could always use more volunteers. This ministry is a real gift for young families. For more information contact Angela Baker, Sara Dietz, or Sue Unger.

JOURNEY IN FAITH GROUP ~ JR HIGH MINISTRY
Thanks to all who have helped with Jr High Ministry this year. Watch bulletin for more information on summer activities. All 7th and 8th graders are invited to participate in Youth Mass. We need singers, volunteers for ministries during the mass and more. Information about our next youth mass is under Youth Ministry for High School. For those students entering 9th grade in the fall you are welcome to join us for any activities for the Faith in Action (High School group) for the summer. See information under Faith in Action.

FAITH IN ACTION (9TH-12TH GRADES)
Our next gathering will be June 13th at 6:30 pm. We will be having a barbecue for all youth ministry at St Patrick. Please bring salad and munchies. Beverage, main dish and dessert will be provided. We will be playing volleyball and basketball and getting to know each other better. We will be having a beach trip on the weekend of July 18th – 20th . Summer Road Trip for teens will be to Steubenville NW in Spokane WA at Gonzaga University. This program is to help teens grow closer to God and to other Catholic Youth from all over the NW area. We will be going on Friday, August 1st ~ 12 noon to Sunday, August 3~10pm. This is a change of plan. We hope more students will be able to attend with a shorter schedule. Scholarships will be available and fundraising will help. The cost per Student will be $200.00. We will be traveling by car. Please contact Sue Unger for more information.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card, St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

SACRAMENT PICTURE INFORMATION
Information for the group pictures can be found at www.kkstudioconnect.com user name is genesis. First Communion pictures are also at this site.
