OPENING PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ,
we worship you living among us
in the sacrament of your body and blood.
May we offer to our Father in heaven
a solemn pledge of undivided love.

PASTOR ON VACATION
Fr. John will be taking some vacation and heading home to Ireland. He will be gone from Tuesday, June 19th through Friday, July 27th. He will be back in the office on Tuesday, July 31st.

DAILY MASS
While Fr. John is away, we will have communion service on the following days: Tuesday evenings, Wednesday and Thursday mornings of each week starting with Tuesday, June 19th and concluding with Thursday, July 26th.

BACCALAUREATE MASS FOR 2007
Baccalaureate Mass for graduating Seniors of 2007 will be this Sunday, June 10th at the 11 am Mass. All seniors are invited to the special blessing. Please bring your cap and gown and meet in the vestibule at 10:45am to line up to process into church. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall following Mass. All are welcome.

EMBER DAY MASS
A service of Healing and Reconciliation for Victims of Sexual Abuse
St. Patrick’s along with parishes through out the Archdiocese will gather to pray for reconciliation and healing for the victims of sexual abuse. We will acknowledge that no voice will be ignored or deemed insignificant. We will gather to ask our God for healing: healing for all those who have been victims of sexual abuse by those whom they should have been able to trust, as well as reconciliation and peace for both victims and their abusers. Let us gather to pray for complete healing of our greater community. Please come and join us on Wednesday, June 13th at 7:00p.m at St. Patrick’s Church.

VANDALISM TO MEN’S BATHROOM
Graffiti was found on the walls of the Men’s Bathroom in the Church this past week. It appears as if someone took an ink pen and wrote on the walls as well as damaging the wall with what appears to be a sharp object. We are asking all parishioners to keep an eye out for anyone that may look suspicious wondering through our buildings. We ask everyone to please accompany their children to the bathroom for their own safety and well being.

Reflecting on the Gospel

hkd1

For many reasons, the fish became a much-beloved symbol in early Christianity. The gospels make allusions to fish a number of times: some of the disciples were fishermen; Jesus commands them to put out their nets and they catch an abundance of fish; Jesus is cooking fish on the seashore for the disciples” breakfast; the risen Jesus eats a piece of ish in the upper room. Later, the letters of the Greek word for fish, ichthus, became an acronym for “Jesus, Christ, God, Son, Savior.”
The gospel for this solemnity mentions two fish. But they were seemingly insufficient for the task at hand: feed a large, hungry crowd. At Jesus’ blessing, the fish are sufficient and satisfying. Herein is a lesson: the fish is a symbol for self-giving. Jesus is the one who gave himself totally and continues to give himself to us in the Eucharist. In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus not only fills the hungry with good things, he fills them to overflowing. This solemnity reminds us that Jesus’ generous extravagance is not measured only by the amount of food but by the kind of Food he offers-his very self in his Body and Blood.
The food the Twelve offered in response to Jesus’ command “give them some food yourselves” was a few loaves and a couple fish, insufficient for so large a crowd. The food Jesus offered was abundance-foreshadowing his own ultimate and abundance self-giving. Human food leaves us hungry and desiring more. Jesus’ food leaves us satisfied. But the satisfaction comes not simply from eating and drinking the Food Jesus offers. The real satisfaction comes from what the eating and drinking lead us to do: give ourselves over to others in self-surrender as Jesus did. The focus of this solemnity, therefore, is not limited to the Eucharistic elements, but leads to our eating and drinking as a proclamation of living the paschal mystery: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes”. Our eating and drinking is our own pledge of self-giving.

Prayer for Fathers
Sunday, June 17, 2007

Dear God,
you have given fathers the task
of raising their children to holiness.
You chose Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
as fathers of your holy nation of Israel.
Despite their failings, weaknesses and poor choices,
you made of them a great and long-lasting nation.
And when the time came for your Son to enter this world,
you chose a holy man named Joseph as his father.
As our Heavenly Father,
you have seen us, your children,
make both wise and poor choices.
Give us grace to be faithful to you,
despite our failings,
and help us be fathers
to our children as you have been to us.
Amen.
