PASTOR ON VACATION
Fr. John will be taking some vacation and heading home to Ireland. He will be gone from Monday, June 16-Thursday, July 31. While Fr. John is away we will have Fr. Rick Paperini and Fr. Dennis O’Donovan as our presiders. Please make them feel welcome.

DAILY MASS.
While Fr. John is away, we will have communion service on the following days: Tuesday evenings, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings of each week starting Tuesday, June 17th, 2008.

IMPORTANT NEWS
I wish to express my gratitude for myself and for you our parish family to Dave Rongerude and Susan Gallagher. Dave and Susan have graciously accepted to represent St. Patrick Parish as part of the Board of Directors which will make up our parish Corporation. Each individual parish in our Archdiocese is now civilly known as a corporation. This change has been implemented by the Archdiocese following the difficulties over the past years when the Archdiocese underwent the many lawsuits and bankruptcy struggles. I will address this more fully in the future so that all of our parish community understands the implications of this change in our Administrative structure.

PETER’S PENCE SECOND COLLECTION
Each year the Holy See expresses its gratitude to the Church in the United States for our efforts to promote and support the Peter’s Pence Collection for the works of the Holy Father. The theme for this year’s Collection echoes that of the Holy Father’s apostolic journey to the United States in April 2008-Christ our Hope. This collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to our brothers and sisters in need throughout the world-those who suffer as a result of war, oppression, disease, and natural disaster. It is an opportunity for Catholics to stand in solidarity with the universal Church and to offer hope to those in need. The collection will be taken up at all the Masses the weekend of June 28 & 29th. Please use the attached envelope.

Reflecting on the Gospel

H1

There is an impulse in people to be generous to those in need, for example, to send relief to victims of natural disasters. Often this includes a personal commitment in which people actually go to disaster areas to contribute time and talent to heal and rebuild. This gospel invites us to deepen this impulse for caring beyond humanitarianism to a participation in and an expression of divine compassion. In the gospel, Jesus looks upon the “troubled and abandoned” crowd and is “moved with pity.” The Greek word for pity means “stirred to the bowels,” moved to deep emotion, moved to compassion. This is one of the times in the gospels when Jesus displays great emotion. He knew that the people would be lost without a leader. He came to find and save. The mission is urgent. Divine compassion is the wellspring of both call and mission. Jesus’ deep compassion is manifested in his immediate response-he “summons the twelve disciples” and sends them as ministers of his compassion, authorized to preach and heal in his name. Jesus still calls and still sends. We ourselves are summoned to the abundant harvest as his laborers. We, too, are authorized to continue his work, which is, at root, a ministry of compassion. Like the Twelve, we have received divine compassion without costs and we are sent to give others that compassion we have received. The authority and power we have been given, however, is not for our own use, but so that the “kingdom of heaven” might be “at hand.” The disciple is always called to do the work of the master. The disciple’s task is the find the lost-the sick, lepers, those possessed by demons-and lead them to “the kingdom of heaven.” The mission of Jesus’ disciples is to reach out to others with the same compassion as Jesus, which is a gift of God. Compassion is essential for fruitful ministry and the right exercise of authority. Compassion is the ear that hears a cry in need so the lost and troubled and abandoned can be shepherded back to safety. Compassion helps us hear the voice of Jesus’ deep love for us, which stirs the bowels within each of us to act as a compassionate shepherd.

PRAYER FOR FATHERS
Dear God,
you have given fathers the task
of raising their children to holiness.
You chose Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
as fathers of your holy nation of Israel.
Despite their failings, weaknesses
and poor choices,
you made of them a great and long-lasting nation.
And when the time came for your Son
to enter this world,
you chose a holy man named Joseph as his father.
As our Heavenly Father, you have seen us,
your children, make both wise and poor choices.
Give us grace to be faithful to you, despite our failings,
and help us be fathers to our children
as you have been to us.
Amen

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Exodus 19:2-6, James Joyce

You Shall Be for Me a Kingdom of Priests

-Receive that call, Stephen, said the priest, is the greatest honor that the Almighty God can bestow upon a man. No king or emperor on this earth has the power of the priest of God. No angel or archangel in heaven. . . has. . . the power of the keys. . . the power of exorcism, the power to cast out from the creatures of God the evil spirits that have power over them, the power, the authority, to make the great God of Heaven come down upon the altar and take the form
of bread and wine.
What an awful power, Stephen!

These words of the spiritual director of Belvedere College in Dublin were not without effect on Stephen Dedalus in James Joyce’s autobiographical story A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. “A flame began to flutter on Stephen’s cheek as he heard in this proud address an echo of his own proud musings.” But Stephen eventually resisted the director’s invitation. Fundamentally, he wanted to be a poet and had come to believe that poetry and priesthood were incompatible callings.
How sad, because priests are supposed to be gatekeepers to realms holy and sublime-to a vision of the world so much more real and profound than our everyday world of compulsive, terror driven reflexes and moods. Their role is to reveal that sacred panorama we all long for as an alternative to a fallen world of loneliness and continual parrying with others. Their function is to reveal that panorama by word and gesture, by creating sacramental happenings that actually evoke experiences we might call celestial. But unfortunately Stephen ran into a few priests in his early years who seemed to have had no inkling of what their calling was about. For instance, there was that retreat master whose sermon on hell covers 27 pages and is well worth reading before a mirror if you want to watch your hair stand on end.

No, for Stephen priesthood seemed to have more to do with rules, rubrics, warnings, the repression of vitality and vision-and so he sought an alternative route to a sublime, creative engagement with life and its mysteries. He left the Church to become an artist. He left the Church, whose heritage from the imagery of the Old and New Testaments down through the chants of Citeaux, the master-pieces of Giotto and Dante, and the splendor of its cathedrals is so laden with poetic expression and visions sublime.
Of course, had their lives overlapped, chance might have brought Stephen into contact with another late nineteenth-century priest in Dublin named Gerard Manley Hopkins, who had an eye for beauty that might have convinced Stephen that priest and poet were not incompatible callings. A priest who could write such things as

Glory be to God for dappled things;. . .
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings.

Let’s face it. Everything Stephen’s spiritual director said about the priesthood is descriptive of a poetic vocation as well. Both may claim the “power of the keys” to open our eyes to dimensions we so often miss; to drive the evil spirits of greed and pettiness from our hearts; to reveal the presence of God in bread and wine, in dappled things, in finches’ wings, in Leopold Bloom, and “the sea crimson sometimes like fire.”
Aren’t we as a Church meant to be a kingdom of priests according to today’s first reading? And, as such, aren’t we also then expected to become poets, artists-makers of songs and things delightful, doers of deeds divine?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Registration papers will be sent out this summer. Registration weekends will be in August and September. You may send in your registrations at any time. Sacrament registration will happen in the Fall. If you are receiving sacraments this year you must provide a baptismal copy at the time of registration if you were not baptized at St Patrick.

NEEDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Running a program needs a lot of different kinds of things. For youth ministry we are still hoping for a Wii system. We also would like to get a tool to help us with bulletin Boards. The Camera we have been using for the last 2 ½ years is beginning to show it’s age. We could use a new digital camera. The one we would like is a Nikon that has add on features. If you would like to help with any of these wishes please contact Sue Unger. Thank you to all who have responded to this plea. It has enhanced our programs to have these extra funds to buy extra things.

SUMMER NURSERY
The nursery will be closed for the months of July and August. We just did not have enough takers for the Summer. Summer nursery will take children from 18 months to four years old. We always need volunteers to help with Nursery for youth and adults. To babysit, youth must be at least 12 yrs. old. The nursery is open during the 11:00am Mass. We could always use more volunteers. This ministry is a real gift for young families. For more information contact Angela Baker, or Sue Unger.

JOURNEY IN FAITH GROUP~ JR HIGH MINISTRY
I hope you have a great summer. Registration will be in the Fall. You will get registration forms in the mail if you were registered this past year. If not you can pick up the forms at the office or call Sue Unger to get a form.

FAITH IN ACTION (9TH-12TH GRADES)
We will be having a beach trip on the weekend of July 18th – 20th . Watch your mail for the form. Summer Road Trip for teens will be to Steubenville NW in Spokane WA at Gonzaga University. This program is to help teens grow closer to God and to other Catholic Youth from all over the NW area. We will leave on Friday, August 1st 12 noon and return Sunday, August 3rd at 10 pm. This is a change of plan. We hope more students will be able to attend with a shorter schedule. Scholarships will be available and fundraising will help. The cost per Student will be $200.00. We will be traveling by car. Please contact Sue Unger for more information. All registered teens in the youth ministry program should have received the Steubenville forms.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card, St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call 1-800-400-7878 or email sbucher@escrip.com and they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

BACCALAUREATE MASS FOR 2008
Thank you to all graduates who joined us for the Baccalaureate Mass. We hope your transition to the next step of life includes practicing your faith.

SACRAMENT PICTURE INFORMATION

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
The urgency of divine compassion teaches us that our ministry is one of mercy. There are always people “without a shepherd”: the teen who needs an adult other than parents to guide him or her along right paths, the lost traveler who might inconvenience us when she or he asks for a bit of our time for giving directions, younger children who are looking for the companionship and guidance of a big brother or sister, the coworker who needs a listening ear, the mail carrier who might need a friendly smile and a bit of encouragement in inclement weather. The gospel this Sunday is a reminder to each of us that we have been shown compassion by a loving God and we, in turn, are to give to others what we have received “without cost”.
Compassion derives from two Latin words that mean to “suffer with.” Living the paschal mystery means that we are willing to suffer with the lost and strayed of God’s house so that they might rise to new life. The troubled and abandoned are all around us; we need simply open our eyes, reach out, and “suffer with” them. In this is healing and strength-for both the “lost sheep” as well as for the faithful disciple.
